My lic. plate light shroud fell of, I have an 06. How is the replacement attached and is it a little more substantial than the stock one? Also just out of curiosity how much does a new one cost? I am planing on going with the warrenty. It seems as if this was problem is not a rare occurance (one of the major flaws in addition to the headlight bulb burning out after upteen miles in the design of this fine bike). Thanks |

I crazy glued mine back on and it's holding - that is an awfully cheap and weak link in the bike (afterthought maybe??). |

They are around $10 for the new improved type. Almost 5K miles since I replaced the original one with no problems so far. |

Tim: how is it a new and improved version? Also do you have the part # handy? Thanks Pso (Message edited by pso on January 22, 2007) |

Slightly different design that meets the requirements of both Europe and domestic. New tooling fixes the cracking seen on some bikes. If yours is cracked it will be covered by warranty. New P/N is Y0514.CA |

For reasons I don't understand, the light that is used on the XB-S Lightnings is NOT the same as the one used on the Uly. But the stud spacing is the same, the size is almost identical, and it fits, looks, and works as if it is the light designed fro the job. I'm not sure why the same part wasn't used on both. The Uly one uses a conventional bulb, the Lightning uses a fuse style bulb (contacts on both ends of the glass tube). We end up with lots of the XB-S lights that come on the cores for our chopped tails. If you need one, I'll throw it in for free with any other order that you make if you don't want to go through the warranty process. I've had one on my Uly since mine broke, same with Reindog. Works like it was made for it. Al |

It was a regulatory issue. The same light was used on European XB-S models and on all Ulysses models and there was another version of the light for the domestic XB-S models. Since then, a new light was designed to meet all the regs and has been in production for a little over a year. |

As others have said -- the new one is better, not expensive and a relatively easy replacement. DAve |

I had one of the original ones fall apart and off. While waiting for the replacement, I realized I wanted a better solution and designed my own. It's a simple update that I've been happy with for months. I used two 5V white LED bulbs, the appropriate resistors for the new lighting. It's significantly brighter than the original. For the plate, I used a thin sheet of aluminum to fill the hole. A hunk of flat stock aluminum bent to hang the blinkers from. The plate uses a thicker stainless steel hanger. The lock needed to be relocated and is a clean solution. As an experiment, I may try recreating the whole thing in carbon fiber in the future.

Anonymous, Thanks for the information about the upgraded part, however I'm not sure the dealers are all aware that it should be a warranty repair, as I was charged for mine. I'll mention that to them next time I am in. |

Mine fell off last summer and I just keep riding. It doesn't look very good but its a great conversation piece. I tell folks its a reverse light. At traffic lights, cars give me more space because they think I am in reverse. The adventure continues. |

Follow up note- I went to Buell, Harley of Annapolis, Md. today about the light. The service manager is a '99 Buell owner and rider so he is very sympathetic. He ordered the new part and said when it comes in if the weather is real bad, if I bring in the tail light piece he will arrange for me to just take the new one with me. I told him I would just pay for it if it was going to be a major hassle. Seems like he is a very reasonable fellow. He knows that there are only two nuts holding on the piece. Another fellow (Harley owner) told me that he had to bring his bike in 20F deggrees for a grommet replacement. One of the parts fellows, the service manager and also one of the tech's in the back are Buell owners, riders, and one racesa a Buell-Looks like I have found a new home to service my bike and also if need be purchase my next Buell from (If I can get my fiance' to get ride of her BMW).Just a note about good service from a Harley dealership. |

Autocom - yes, I have the Super Pro AVi box. It's hung by velcro in the back. My GPS (Garmin 276C), iPod, and cell phone go through it. |
