So I crashed my 2000 Silver S3T into the side of a mountain going about 35 MPH...I will soon post a list of needed parts..if anyone can help... I am not yet sure if I am going to part it out..or rebuild to be honest...I haven't contacted the insurance company yet...not sure how I am going to play that one yet...any suggestions... There are quite a few body panels on e-bay right now you might want to take a look at. Depending on how much needs to be repaired/replaced, I'd want to know what it would take to fix it first... then obviously compare it to your deductible, it really depends on how badly you hurt it. Step 1, check out the frame to see if it has a kink. From personal experience, there's a "memory" to the frame that recoils into shape but isn't quite right. Mine was on the underneath side of one of the tubes. Insurance calculates the cost of replacement for everything -- at least they did for mine. Not sure if I agree with that approach but it paid off well for me in a separate incident. I got more than enough funds to buy all the parts I wanted off of eBay along with a few pieces of bling. In 20-20 hindsight though, it may have been better to settle for less. I expect to take a hit trying to sell a "totalled" bike in the future. If you decide to go the insurance route, decide what you really want/need to spend in parts. I've heard cases where guys have taken less than the totalled amount in order to prevent getting a salvage title but still received enough to restore their ride. | ||

I was taking 532 up to Ski Apache near Ruidoso, NM... I only made it about 4 miles up the 12 mile ride... I crashed..pretty hard. Pics to come...The bike is thrashed...My right thigh is bruised and swollen. My right lower back has road rash and bruising. My Right shoulder is bruised..and to top it all off I my CT scan said I had a Brain bleed. According to the Neurologist and the other Doc's all should be back to good in a few weeks. I don't really remember much about the accident... I remember setting up for the turn...(a left hand sweeper) pushing left, lean left... and rolled on the throttle... I remember about half way through the turn...I don't remember any pegs scraping or seeing any other vehicles. I was going about 35 when I went into the turn. Apparently I blacked-out for awhile after the accident. I was awaken by a guy in a truck asking me if I was OK...I was about 15 feet before my bike... It was like waking up from a dream. I always wear all of my gear... but when I woke up I didn't have my helmet or gloves on. I walked back up to the bike and saw my Helmet, Gloves, and Ear Plugs in a nice neat pile near the bike...I can only assume after the crash I took them off... I refused EMS at the scene... But as soon as I got into ABQ I went to the VA hospital...to get checked out... I plan on doing an assessment on the bike tonight... | ||

I'm glad you were wearing your gear. That could have ended SO much worse if you hadn't. I hope your bike is salvageable for you, if not I hope you can get enough for the parts for your down payment! | ||

Bike is totaled due to a tweaked frame at the neck. They said I could buy it back...for 1500 but that would leave me with about a 3000 payment. I think I am going to let them take it. Then I will only owe 1300...by spring I should be healed up..the bike paid off..and ready to keep the rubber side down once again.. | ||

Offer them $1000 for it. They really don't usually want to deal with having to sell crashed bikes. | ||

buy it, part it out on ebay, and you will pay it off by christmass You need to take everything apart, sell the tripples seperate from the forks sell the wheels seperate, even sell the tires You will end up even or ahead of the load by around 500 even if you end up owing 500, its better than 1300 Also take blakes advice and make an offer, if they take 1000, i know you will be ahead I have done it R | ||

The complete motors sell on Ebay for $1500 to $2000 partly due to the fact that Harley-Davidson does not sell sportster motors. The only way the chopper folks get a Harley-Davidson Sportster motor is off a used bike. This may help to explain the Mutant Buell movement over the last several years. | ||

So let me get this right, the insurance pay-off, isn't enough to pay off your loan??? You certainly should try to keep it if possible, but do remember, it will now have a salvage title, since it has been totalled. And you can sell the motor to someone looking to build a chopper and get your money back. | ||

Well the loan was actually more than the cost of the bike. To cover start-up costs like insurance, title, tax, gear, and a few upgrades... The insurance company is actually paying me more than what I paid for the bike. But with the extra on the loan and the deductible I will be left owing about 3000. I figure about 1200 will be left on the loan. Which the bank says it will convert to a personal loan. I would have to come up with the 1500 myself to keep the bike. I'll keep ya posted... | ||

I just went through something similar. A guy in a pickup passed out and jumped a median on the highway right at me. I swerved hard and missed him but went down and slid about 50'. I got some nasty road rash and the bike was scratched but rideable. The insurance wanted to total it but I talked them into paying me $2800 and not salvaging the title. The repair shop also screwed me by offering $2000 to the insurance guy for salvage without checking with me first. I replaced the mirror and turn signal and just got back from a 3000 mi. road trip to N. Carolina and the bike was great. This winter I will have the body panels painted and chase down the oil leak that started after the accident. Insurance can be such a soul-suck. I am very sorry to hear about your ordeal and hope you heal up fast and can come out ahead somehow. | ||
