Steve M,
look here and you'll figger it out.
http://www.pljohnson.com/electrical/motorsandcntl/motors/motortorqcfmgpm.shtml

the 5250 is just a units conversion number, something to do with how much work a horse could do in a period of time, see http://auto.howstuffworks.com/horsepower1.htm

Tricklidz,

I'd be willing to bet that if you looked at the vertical borders of your dyno chart you'll see differently graduated scales on either side. One for horsepower, one for torque.

Danny's probably right. You see that a lot. The software oughta default to scale the two sides the same, but it often doesn't.

They cross at 5252 because the formula says they have to:

hp = (torque x rpm) / 5252

if rpm in that equation is 5252, then you can reduce it to hp = torque

The 5252 comes from 33,000 ft/lbs of work that a horse could do in one minute. Move something 33,000 feet in one minute with 1lb of force applied and you have one horsepower. Well, if translate that to a spinning shaft, and the shaft is spinning say 5252 rpm, turns out that a point at a one foot radius from the shaft will travel 33,000 feet in one minute. If there's a pound of force applied at that 1 foot point, presto, one horsepower.

Quote:

If we can presume the report is indicative of a trend (not realistic given the paucity of data), then Buell could end the year with nearly 12,000 units shipped, which, if they are actually sold, would put Buell in the BMW league in terms of unit sales.

To clarify, the only way Buell could come close to BMW's US sales numbers in 2003 is if they don't ship any bikes outside of the US and sell them all here.

The 2003 production target for Buell is 12,500 units, worldwide.

BMW makes many more bikes (74,614 in 2000) than what reach the US. The US is their largest bike export market, sold via 138 dealers.

To sum up:

148 U.S BMW dealers sold 12,684 BMW bikes to their customers in 2002.

436 U.S. Buell dealers sold 5,335 Buell bikes to their custormers in 2002.

110 U.S. Aprilia dealers sold 1,869 Aprilia bikes to their customers in 2002.

Elvis,

Wow! I just reviewed the numbers. Buell has never shipped more than 2000 steel frame/large displacement bikes in a quarter . . . ever.

Other than Q4 in 1998, Q1 and Q4 in 1999, your statement would be accurate.

What if Buell was not the least bit concerned with, or saw themselves in competition with, BMW?

Just a thought.

I own a BMW sitting right here next to the desk. It's a good motorcycle, it has it's place. I see it as complimentary to the Buell and can't imagine ever finding the BMW pitted against a Buell as the "final two" in a decision making process.

I guess that's why I also have an F-250 pickup and a little foreign convertible.....

My guess is that Erik loses very little sleep wandering what David Robb is up to....

Just an opinion.

José, I’m not sure why you seem to derive some sort of perverse pleasure out of imagining that Buell is floundering, but the numbers show a very different story than you would lead people to believe. Now that we’ve got a full year worth of XB production completed, lets take a close look at the numbers.

I know in the past you have made a strong distinction between shipments and sales. This distinction may be valid for short periods (for example: Did more bikes sell in January 2003 or February 2003?). Dealer inventories are consistent enough that they will sell roughly the same number of bikes as they receive in a given year. If they don’t sell the bikes they receive one month, they will order less the next month etc.

From Q2 2002 until Q1 2003, Buell shipped 8814 XB’s and 3740 blasts. In 2001, Buell shipped 6436 large displacement bikes and 3489 blasts.

That shows 36.9% more XB’s than the best year of steel framers, and an overall increase of 26.5% total units. How could anyone consider those numbers bad?

Your position is beginning to sound as ridiculous as the Iraqi information minister.

With regard to the number of Buell Dealers versus the number of bikes sold, compared to BMW (which appears to be a point José was trying to make)...

I think that if you want to try and go down that road, you need to take the "1 token blast in the showroom" dealers out of the equation. At least half of the "Buell" dealers I have run across have little more then the sign over the front window.

The number of bikes sold and the money made really does open my eyes a little though. I am MUCH more inclined to cut the Harley mothership a little more slack and give them a little more appreciation. They probably make about the same off Buell in a year then they do off selling Harley embossed wallets in a month, and Buell is surely is a lot more work to keep up.

I think they do it because they are into motorcycles, and can appreciate the really cool thing the Buell company has achieved. Just like me. And I say "Thanks". (even if 90% of the broken pieces of my Cyclone are the Harley ones ;) )

Bill:

They do it because the folks who saved Harley-Davidson have looked commercial death in the eye and know the power of investing in the future.

The comparisons we are wanting to make cary little weight. Soon we'll be deducting the BMW showroom that has the motorcycles largely as decoration, they exist. Anyone willing to bet on the rash assumptions we are making? I'm not.

Buell has done things that other larger firms, less "mobile, agile and hostile" dream of yet dare not. I assure you (based on a phone conversation last night) that Buell has some of it's biggest rooters within the ranks of at least one of the motorcycle giants.

Need some perspective...any of you business types familiar with the "therory of materiality"? If Harley-Davidson's annual statements had been out of balance by the total of Buell revenues a couple years ago, it would not have warranted, under AICPA/FASB guidelines, looking for the error.

This entreprenurial element, I submit, is what not only allows, but taunts the folks at Buell into going not only where no manufacturer has gone, but in places where most don't see. Like the Enterprise entering the Ziorn Galaxy there are risks and if you aren't willing to get bopped on the nose from time to time, eat crow, fix the problem and get on with your life, you haven't the moxy to be part of the team.

Imagine....for a painful moment, if Buell corporate took a cue from some former disenfranchised owners and spent 40% of their waking hours conjuring up excuses and entering into adversarial dialouges of "I told you so" on the internet.

I could not be more thirlled with what Buell is doing. You;ll never get my S-2 from me, but I gotta tell you that XB9S is looking more and more like a "youth recovery tool" in my twilight years.

Anyone know where I can find some stock or .010 over jugs and pistons for a 45" HD Flathead?

All of the normal source come up craps, 45 Restoration.com, Victory, Antique Motorcycle Supply, swap meets, on and on.

Anyone know of someone that might have a pair laying around?

PPIA - there's supposed to be an outfit in Holland that is casting new ones. Know anything about them?

They make EVERYTHING else for the damn engine, heads, crank, flywheels, valves, cams... But no jugs or pistons.

Yes, and horsepower and torque are two seperate things, mass and weight are two seperate things, gross sales and net sales are two seperate things.

We have extensive, reliable, comprehensive data on shipped vehicles going back to 1998, broken down by quarters and frames. We don't have anything even close to that on sales to public, so any reasonable evaluation needs to be based on shipped vehicles.

Chop: the guys you're thinking of are at the link Mike posted. They're in Sweden. Father Son outfit.

I read about them somewhere ?? I think they were either drag racing a flathead, or trying for a record at Bonneville. According to the article a couple of die-hard enthusiasts.

I'm sure they'd be able to get you what you need. If you need assistance with communication, I'd be happy to help. All of Scandinavia was part of Denmark at one point or another, so they all speak a dialect of Danish

Registrations comes pretty derned close.

Shipped to dealers numbers dont mean squat if you still have new 2001 models sitting on showroom floors that dealers cant sell for invoice. Well, I take that back, dealers are unlikely to order more of the same models if they can sell the old ones. But if you shift the model line to something new....

This applies to ANY make of any vehicle.

BTW, I was at the Columbus, OH BIKE NIGHT last night and it was well over 1500 bikes I guess ( Quaker Steak and Lube ), mine was one of 4 Buells and one out of 2 X1s.
Although I didn't really like the atmosphere ( it was very fake and everybody was dressed to show off and stuff like that ) I kinda enjoyed riding off on something that nobody else had.
And except for some radical choppers those HD all looked basically the same to me.
I dont know what people see in them, although I ride with HD guys ( and they agree with me that they are paying exorbitant prices for 50 year old technology ) most of the time, I just cant see why somebody in a world full of dumb asses would want what everybody else has.
Everybody was labelling themselves and wearing HD even to the underwear I bet :-)

I was totally standing out of the crowd not just for the size but I was the only one all in black WITHOUT any labels on my clothes ( except for the mandatory troublemaker germany hat ), Doc Martens steel toes and carrying a helmet.

The conclusion I draw :

Even in the world of hardcore "bikers" ( I havent met or hung out with Buell riders ) it is all about the show, GSXRs with 3 feet long swing arms, polished show bikes that I wouldnt even set a JD glass on if they were standing in my living room, steroid pumped knuckleheads and all that goes with it.

A few BMWs and ducati monsters and "individualists" bikes were parked off to the side just like mine and were hardly recognized or even looked at ( after all its only carbon/kevlar fiber and NOT chrome :-) ).

And NO, I didnt see any of them come or go with any women - including me :-)

and NO, that's not really what I got the Buell for anyway .............. d:-)
