Any news regarding dyno runs, availability, cost on the latest offerings from Force for the XB9s?

Jprovo,

I am thinking about another alumimum version for XB (no Blast though). I do like the SuperTrapp automotive mufflers, they are reasonably priced, mount easily on our Buells, and are nicely tunable, lightweight too.

How is the one you made holding up?

Jprovo,

Only about 300 miles on it, and now it is 20degF. Warmer weather will tell the tale. Impressions to date:
1. Louder than stock, quieter than H-D Race muffler.
2. Has perceived (no dyno) Torque dip between 3000 - 4000 rpm.
3. Wheelies more easily (likely because less weight down low, i.e. - higher center of gravity). It is a small change though, 14.0 lb stock muffler vs 4.1 lb alumimum muffler, but the c.g. probably does not move up too much.
4. Noticeably 'tippier' as I come to a stop, same reasoning as (3).
5. Some consider it ugly. I chose to not add bracketry for the chin fairing.
6. I would really like to eliminate the Torque dip with the next design.

RickA... sorry I missed your post, I was traveling on business.

That supertrapp looks like a very cool approach, looks like you can get a black supertrapp for like $106 or so, and a polished like you have for $180 or so. Definately closer to my price range.

Did you cut the old exhaust can off at the inlet and just bolt the trapp to that? Did you just measure that pipe and buy the trapp that fit that size, or did you use an adapter section of pipe?

Finally, how loud does the thing have to be and still have OK performance? I am not looking to make a huge improvement in performance, and don't want something a whole lot louder then stock at low and mid RPM ranges. Loud at WOT is fine. I do want a little less weight, a better looking can, and a little more flexibility for tuning.

Thanks! Looks like a nice setup for us poor guys.

XB9,

forwarded from "2003 firebolt" thread:

I did spring for the race ECM, along with the Latus....However I have not been able to put it to the seat dyno as yet. doing the rest of the maintenance now as well and probably won't get to play with it until I get back from Brian Nallins this weekend (KCMOB making a field trip at my request) It does sound good though! and damnn does it fit well! I hope the difference is noticable, the dyno graph may not do it justice? I also ordered the custom seat as it made a hell of a lot less of an impression "on" me at the bike show. I will have to black out the Orange pegasus on it though. I will be sure and post my thoughts on the ECM/muffler after I've done some laps.....

Thanks!
That's the setup I'm leaning toward, Race ECM and Latus.... the stock muffler mods I did were more of an experiment than anything, I need to put some miles on it in the spring to evaluate it. Anyway, it's still to quiet.

I'd like to see a dyno chart of the Latus with the race ECM. The only chart I've seen of this exhaust is with the stock setup. I would think the ECM would help it perform. Think Latus has dyno'd it with the race ECM?

I have the Latus muffler with the race ecm. On the same day ,on the same dyno ,my bike made 5 more hp than a firebolt with the buell race muffler and race ecm. I also had more torque down low and up top. The buell race setup had more midrange torque. I have no way to post my dyno sheets but if you want some more details you can email me. I will be glad to explain.

Funny, I hollowed out the stock can on my X1(for the sound of course!) and thought it was breathing better and then bought the race kit and WOAH! couldn't believe the difference it made! after smacking myself repeatedly for waiting two whole years for that upgrade.....I decided early on that I was going to do some* performance mods to the firebolt. This hopefully is the tip of the Iceberg(fingers-crossed). Nallins has a 1200cc kit for the firebolt, Hmmm. Their website says 115+ rwhp .... I'll let you know what I find out about it. I think if you called Latus they could probably put one on the dyno with the race ECM, hell, they should have already. Also keep your eyes peeled for large tube headers, might be needed here real soon.
I've also seen posts about boring the throttle body to 50mm but haven't researched that as yet. E- mail me on the side there may be something else you might be interested in along these lines but I have just heard rumors...don't want to advertise something that doesn't exist(wink)

Installed a prototype Force pipe on our demo XB9S this week and the thing sounds incredible. Not quite as loud as the Force for the tube frame Buells, but a similar sound. We're putting a Power Commander on it and taking over to Brian (Nallin) so he can write some maps for the thing. As soon as I have dyno sheets I'll get them posted. This could most definitely be THE pipe for the XB line.

Mikep,

Pipes with torque dips always wheelie easier than ones with smooth powerbands, due to the quick rise out of the dip. I'll bet it's that, and not the 10 lbs, which is down low on the bike anyhow, and unlikely to move the CG much. As far as being tippier on a stop, maybe it's because you are going faster and stopping harder!

Fitted a race kit to my friends Firebolt two weeks ago and had it dyno'd, results h'mmm.
Gained 2 hp top end, moved huge flat spot in torque and hp 1000 rpm further up making it even worse to ride, sounded horribly loud and rusted after 1 week.
We tryed swapping over to the std ecm and fuelling was no different, unpluging white wire, no different.
Gave up and refitted standard parts except for k&n.
We chopped 6 inches off rear std pipe, welded two 45 degree elbows onto holes and bolted on a spare pair of TL1000 Devil carbon silencers on to rear footpegs. It just clears belt tensioner but sounds great and burbly. Had it dyno'd, results, lost 2 ft/lbs torque at peak but it holds it for longer without such a prominent flat spot and gained 1 hp top end.
He nearly took it back last week to the dealer to ask for his TL1000s back but now he said he will keep it. What is Buell playing at selling such a naff race kit?

We've installed several Buell race kits and have gotten gains of 7 to 8 HP. Not sure what the deal is with the one you did but those results are not typical. I'm also not sure how well the exhaust will work with it bolted to the rear footpegs brackets.

Ar15ls1,

Does the Latus pipe fit well on the mounts under the bike? It looks to me that the pipe would have to have the same curvature of the stock pipe to fit properly. How loud is it? Do you need earplugs in for extended trips or is it bearable to ride a while with it?

Hey! Time out for a second.

I'm not exactly trying to change the subject here, but....

You should ALWAYS wear earplugs! Middle age men that say "Huh?" all the time are such a bore. JMHO, YAMMV.

OK, back to our usual programing. Joey, you're up.

The Latus muffler does not exactly fit in the original mounts, but the worm clamps do pull it in very tight. There is no movement at all. Everything else on the muffler is a great fit. The noise is avery tuned loud. It is not nearly as loud as a force pipe. Some people may think it is to loud, but I love it. On a long trip some of you may opt for the ear plugs. Remember, the exhaust exits right underneath you. I highly recommend this muffler for performance, sound, and good looks.

the Latus is definitely loud, not as loud as the force pipe, I heard that one at high country this weekend, and that is loud! After and thirty mile run this afternoon I think for longer trips I will be adding a set of earplugs to my necessity list. but the sound is awesome! definitely music to the ears.

Justin, it was a pleasure meeting you and thanks for taking so much time showing us MOBber's your facility and shooting the poop for a coupla' hours. I for one will be excited about stopping in again soon. it's great to see a dealer stocking so much Buell product and with such enthusiastic employees. KUDOS!

Toff,

Did you have the "TPS reset" by the dealer when you installed the new/race ECM? Then did you take it for a ride to allow the AFV to self calibrate? ohwell If not your results make sense. If you did, then I'd suggest you should have tried the TPS Reset again. A mistake the first time may have caused the trouble. I've heard a few Buellers say that their first TPS Reset was faulty. My friend Keith had it happen to him just yesterday. He just put in the race ECM and K&N filter.

Yes, attaching exhaust to pegs will guarantee a broken exhaust. The engine/exhaust move and vibrate significantly relative to the frame/footpegs.

We had the TPS reset and the AFV checked after we had it dyno'd, everything was hunky dory.
The actual dissapointment wasnt the lack of horses but the nature of the driveability. My X1 blows his xb9r into the weeds everywhere as soon as the pace is upped. Even one of the guys we ride with can out accelerate him on his 10 year old fzr600r.
It looks great and gets a lot of attention but i think Buell took a step down the performance ladder compared to Buells of old to gain reliabilty.
He has done about 300 miles and so far no cracks as yet, we mounted the silencers off 1/2 inch strip of stainless and rubber mounted these to the silencers so it does have some allowable movement.
Cheers for all your help.

There is something wrong with your XB. I have spent a fair amount of time on my X1 and my boss on his XB at race tracks this last summer. The X1 has a Force pipe, race ECM and high flow filter. At the beginning of the season we did a track day at Road America and going down the straight(very long straight) whoever was in the lead stayed there and it seemed about even.In the corner exits I would pull a little on Doug and his Bolt. By mid summer we had the Bolt equipped with the factory race kit and then it was pretty even on corner exits. Doug and I weigh within a pound or two of each other so it's not that. I'm not sure what is wrong but like I said in my previous post, the results you have are not typical of what I've seen. I do know that there have been a few bad ECMs and maybe would check that by replacing it with a different one and see if you get any better numbers.

Toff,

Review the procedure for installing and calibrating the Race ECM. You may notice something that was not properly addressed.

Replace the spark plugs?

Check the cam position sensor timing. It needs to be per spec.

Check intake seals for leakage.

Check condition of injectors.

Check intake tract including throttle body for obstruction... contamination, foreign objects, deformed protruding seal(s).

Check exhaust tract including cylinder head ports for obstruction... contamination, foreign objects, deformed gaskets/seals.

Good luck. The shop should be doing this for your friend. The bike is NOT running properly.

Crikey Blake!
86hp, more like 73hp.
Is that rear wheel horses or crank, the graph looks similar with the dip moved up 1000rpm but his is more pronounced. Hey i dont mind its just great the fact that my X1 trounces his.
We are considering ways to modify the rear seat hump next to accomodate a nitrous bottle. He likes the rear end of the Adrenalin race bike.

Hey guys,

Some news on the Force....Popped the bike on the dyno at Nallin's and mapped it on the Power Commander. Beat the race kit at all settings by considerable margins. On our demo 9S with Buell race filter and ECM at 3500 rpm it made 14 more horsepower, and get this, 18 more foot pounds of torque! Can you say 800 lbs. gorilla? Peak gains were marginal (3 horse), but this thing is a totally different motorcycle in the low and midrange. It's snowing here the last few days so I haven't been able to log any seat time, but I'll let you know what it feels like as soon as I can.

Hey, has anybody taken any db levels with the various pipes?

I've read a lot of "really loud"'s regarding a couple of setups, but how much louder are they, really? 8)

I'm interested in the performance gains from the Force pipe, but not at the expense of my ears (or the goodwill of my neighbors, frankly).
