Bigdaddy -- how are you??? How's your Dad? Been watching to see if there were any updates. We've been thinking about you and praying for your Dad. Keep us posted.

Sounds like we might have another Bueller for our trip to Boone.....

Hey Kristi,

Your prayers are appreciated -- they're also working ; )

They got two stints in dad and we're picking him up sometime tonight,,,he's taking up residence at my place until I parole him.

We moved my mom to Lincolnton and dad will have a heart valve replaced in Charlotte. It's looking better each day. I just have to get through the next couple of months, so keep on praying.

I'm excited about any kind of trip right now, Boone, Dragon, Daytona, I just need to ride for a very long time to clear my head.

Thanks for asking,

G2

Glad to hear things are improving. Never knew you'd be a parole officer did you?? LOL

I know you've got your plate full with both parents being ill at the same time. Three years ago, my Daddy had quad bypass in Winston-Salem. I had been home all of 3 days when my Mom called to say that my sister had an 8mm brain aneurysm and surgery was to follow once they got her blood pressure under control. Off to Cincinnati I went. On the day of her surgery, the West Company in Kinston exploded, only 1/4 mile as the crow flies from where Carlos works. All came though fine, but it was a rough January to say the least. Hang in there and know that you've got support here if only in prayer and an occasional ride.

Carlos is also ready for Daytona. I am ready for March Badness! We're still talking about when we should try to head out to Boone. We may need some advice on where to stay, etc.

You keep the faith and we'll keep praying.

Jim -- here's what I've proposed to Dave & Carlos. If Carlos will finish my floor tonight, he can ride tomorrow with you to Washington. (Gotta pull strings where I can!!) He just got the Uly rear tire replaced, so he's itching to ride. After the ride, you all come here and we'll cook out late in the afternoon. What do you think??

What time are you looking at being in Washington?

I doubt Rebecca would be happy with me if I left Raleigh before 10. That would put me in your neck of the woods about 11:30-12. Or I can come later if that works out better.

The cookout sounds GREAT! Do I get the rice & bean dish you made last time?

One small snag we need to work around. Wash is a 4hr round trip for me, which is plenty of riding for me for a day. It's less than an hour for Carlos & Dave, so they are going to want to do more. I could leave later so they had some time to play before I got there (perhaps meet in wash at 1:00.) Or we could meet in Wash, and ride back to your place. Then Rebecca and I could help get dinner ready while Carlos and Dave play some more.

I'm sure the guys can find a scenic route before meeting you in Washington. You know those two can't ride a straight line! Maybe Carlee can ride with Carlos tomorrow.

As for the black beans and rice, you got it. Quick and easy! Have to decide between chicken and tenderloin.

Anyone else coming?? Pauletta's birthday was Wednesday, so we may just have to celebrate with a drink or two or three.....

Check later tonight for Carlos to post about a place to meet in Washington, probably the waterfront, but who knows.

I can recommend a place 'near' Boone. It's a motorcycle resort called Stations Inn, located in Laurel Springs, NC. Maybe 35 miles northeast of Boone, right off the parkway. I stayed there last May for a night with a bunch of Harley riders from the triad area. We had a great time. I plan on making a ride up there sometime this year. More info is on the website. www.stationsinn.com

Jlnance - One o'clock at the waterfront in Washington NC will be great. Dave is not going to make it, but if I can coach Carlee back on the bike, we will meet you there and guide you back to Grifton.

We had a rough ride tonight. I had to take Carlee to a trophy night and had to make a run to Ron Ayers tonight so I took Carlee on the Uly. I finally broke down and put the Tour Pack on the bike and it doesn't look too bad. Though I tried to ride around Greenville to get to Ron Ayers, I still had to get back in the traffic on the north side of Greenville. As I pulled onto US-264 heading toward Greenville, there was a traffic jam because of two cars, the lead car especially, was having trouble and riding at 25mph on a 55mph road. The back road I was on becomes the right lane of the four lane section of US-264. These two yah-whos moved over into the right lane in front of the SUV I was following, blocking us in the middle of very hostile traffic that was tired of being behind these two Dee-Dee-Dees. Then you throw the redneck into the mix and you have a demolition derby. The redneck that is two cars behind me in an S-10 with a latter twice the length of the truck, cuts off a dump truck passig him in the left lane. At this point my cushion is closing around me as the dump truck lock it up not to hit the latter stick out the bed of the S-10. I guess I watched too much of that Japanese Lane-Splitting movie posted here on Badweb, and decided it was time to get out of Dodge. I must say that was my first lane-splitting adventure and well worth it. I passed the SUV in front of me then the two Dee-Dee-Dees, then merged back in traffic. Up ahead I get stopped by a stop light. Guess who wants to object to my pass? Yeup, the redneck in the pick up that caused me to vacate. He rolled down his window and I wave at him. He hollers something at me but I ignore him. So he keeps doing it. Finally I turned around and stare at him. He at first shuts up, but then starts again. I continue to stare at him and after five seconds of hearing him tell me I was crazy for lane-splitting, I replied by yelling back at him by saying, "If you Stupid Cagers weren't trying to kill yourselves, I would not have to pass to get out of the way!" He proceeds to roll his window up very quickly and as the light turns green, he takes off looking straight ahead.

If that wasn't enough, I then have to get Carlee to Basketball trophy night, so I head down Hwy 11 through Greenville. Knowing that I have unsettled my passenger already, I easily work my way through traffic to a nice big pocket in traffic. I'm riding along the four lane when I noticed a car on the right trying to turn left. I always pay close attention to side traffic. As the last car passes his position, I see his brake lights go out and I start to flash my High beam. By this time it is almost completely dark. I can see the high beaming lighting up the side of his car, but he decides to go anyway. Grabbing a fist full of brakes, and I feel Carlee's face mask hit the back of my helmet. When the guy in the car sees the Uly dive as I was braking, he then decides to stop, now blocking the right lane. I could have stopped, but it still spooked Carlee to the point she was ready to get off the bike. We get to trophy night, I explained to Carlee why I did what I did, between the lane-splitting and the hard braking she was reassured. Stupid Cagers!

After Dinner, traffic had settled down and we enjoyed a peaceful ride home.

Hey Carlos, I hear you on the crazy cagers. I was in busy traffic yesterday on the way home and this lady was riding about 4-5 feet off my rear tire. I tapped my brake a few times...nothing. I tapped my brakes and waved her off..nothing. I slowed down and then sped back up to open some space...Back she came 4-5 feet off my rear tire at 40-45 mph. So I decided I had enough. I slowly came to a complete stop in the middle of Old Stage Rd. Cars as far back as I could see, blowing their horns. I put the bike in neutral turned around and explained to the lady in "NO" uncertain terms to back the "#$!!" off. Then took off again. No more problems.

As for the Washington trip, I would love to go, but between a ugly sinus infection on my part and previously mentioned medical bills (insurance sucks-refused to pay $3500 per month for medicine for my daughter) So now we have almost $7000 invested in just one medicine-luckily thats the limit).

On the other hand we are leaving for my daughters Wish trip on Wednesday which was to go to Disney. Luckily for us this is a completely paid trip. I will try to keep up on bad web, and am hoping to visit Nick, but this is Kylies week. You guys ride safe, and talk to you soon. Larry

Carlos - I'll see you at one. Rebecca was up at 2:30 playing video games. She will be thrilled to get an extra hour of sleep.

Sounds like an adventure yesterday. How much did you have to coach Carlee about what not to tell mom? Did you look at this video that got posted the other day where the girl on the R1 got boxed in?

My yesterdays adventure...

Decided to leave work early and take the extra 20 mile trip back from work to home, while running the back roads from Jordan lake area to my house come over a hill and see a great triple threat, dog in my lane, runner on the left shoulder and Dee, dee, dee in a ford ranger avoiding said runner by driving in my lane. Now the fun came when the idiot Ranger driver see the dog and stops in my lane....

Luckily 6 piston Nissan caliper never fails and as I passed the now utterly confused ranger driver I yelled and gave him a great one finger salute, which the runner stopped to see...Overall it was not as crazy as some but it was an odd chain of events to unfold in the middle of nowhere.

I told Kristi about it. She knows I am an aggressively defensive rider. I am a firm believer that the throttle is you best defensive tool and I will use it to get out of "Stupid traffic". I don't mean normal traffic where traffic is heavy but everyone is moving along at near the same pace. No I mean when someone is doing something stupid, like swerving back and forth trying to get through traffic at a faster pace than everyone else around them, or someone in a high-speed lane blocking traffic and upsetting the rest of the drivers around them, like the episode last night. I usually try to get out it, either by pulling off the road, falling back from the problem car, or if I have to, throttle through it. Last night, I was boxed in and slowing down to pull off was not an option.

On the way home I maneuvered around traffic to stay away from another S10 that was using my line to get through traffic behind me. In that case I was able to clear traffic legally and get right to let the S10 by. No issue and Carlee never knew it. The other day I rode Carlee back from her horse riding lesson and I picked up one of those slammed bumble bee imports. We were on a two lane road and I kept passing cars to stay away from him. He couldn't stay right with me because the passing lanes were short, I was able to stay away enough to be safe. He finally catches up to me at a stop sign. As I go, I hear him behind me. He was giving it all he had trying to "Race?" me or something. I was not on it, but in second gear I rolled on the throttle and rode second and third gear to about 6,000rpm. Of course the Uly left him behind. At the next intersection I turned right. It was not the way I was planning on going home, but got me away from this kid. I may be a little over sensitive with traffic, but better safe than sorry.

Odie,

We're planning like we'll be at March Badness -- I should add that lately when I make plans things go bad.

If everyone stays semi-healthy me and the number one son will be in attendance.

I'll have to drink a Pepsi,,,,gave up adult beverages years ago.

Actually feel much better not drinking. Clarity in the morning is a wonderful thing!! If I'm away from the wife I'll drink more but only then. See you soon! Odie

After my experience today all I can say is that indepent shops ROCK! When I don't have the tools and when the factory authorized dealers either don't have the tools to do the job or give you grief because you tend to stray away from the herd, indpendent shops are truly a blessing.

Progress today:
1. Rear wheel bearings replaced at an independent shop cheaper, quicker and more fun than at an authorized dealer.
2. Rear wheel with functional wheel bearings and saddlebag bracket back on S2 and S2 back on 'normal' rear wheel stand.
3. Tank cover, fuel tank, entire exhaust system, air cleaner assembly, center tie bar mount, carb and intake manifold removed. New intake manifold bolts will definitely be needed as the last one almost didn't come out.

On the slate for tomorrow is removing the rocker box assemblies, cylinder heads and cylinders in order to replace leaking cylinder base gaskets and install NRHS pushrod bases. I'll be starting with the rear and will hopefully be able to get both the rear and the front done tomorrow and get the rest back together early this coming week. After the motor work is done, then I will turn my attention to swapping the transmissions. After that, a little 'glass work on the saddlebag bodies and then I will be ready for the next 106,000 miles and
Daytona Beach Bike Week(end) part 2

I sure wonder what a XB with 106,000 miles would be like. My suspiscion is that it wouldn't be too much different, but alas I am waiting for someone to prove me wrong...

Rock on,
1313
