WiFi only needs an active non-secure network and/or hotspot, no ISP card unless you need a dedicated anywhere wireless connection. This would be like the Verizon VZ Access PCMCIA cards, etc.

Blaster_s- thanks! I guess what I'm after is to be able to get on the internet practically anywhere there is a good signal. A friend at work has T-Mobile on his laptop but he didn't have a card in his already so they put one in. To access the internet going down the highway, etc. will I need an ISP to install their card into my PDA? I believe I can access my home wireless network as long as I put in my WEP code but that doesn't help me going down the road or sitting at work.......help me....please!!!!

To get a specific ISP one would have to use their card. Your PDA is set up to use un-secure wi/fi out of the box, I think that's what they meant.

B_S- you think your head hurts, Dell just called and said it won't ship until 29 Sep. I expected to have it in hand by tuesday. Oh well.

Glitch- yea, I got the Wi-Fi deal. That would work great if I lived up by ya'll but I'm down here in the sticks. There are some hotspots in Dothan but nowhere around here. I guess I'll have to go to T-Mobile. They said $199 for the card and $29.99 unlimited every month. I'm such a slave to tech crap..........I'm such a loser.........

Odie...
I did 3 years of research into wireless technology.
I SHOULD be able to help you.

You will need a WiFi network already running before you can connect to it with your PocketPC.
It is pretty easy to connect as long as you have a signal.

But WiFi needs a hotspot (802.11), and they have very limited range. The $29.99 per month is a good deal for unlimited usage, provided your bandwidth is good. If they are using the same data network they were giving to my sidekick when I was using them, it was SLOOOOOOOW.

Unless you want to go hunting for unsecured accesspoints, which are a dime a dozen, but you could find yourself in a honeypot, and technically the moment you transmit any data over their network you could be prosecuted for computer tresspass if somebody wanted to make you a project.

I have a co-worker here in Ohio that uses Verizon, he gets good bandwidth (300k bits pre second, not unlike DSL or a slow cable modem) and OK coverage, but it costs him $80 per month for the data service alone.

You might be able to get a cell phone that works as a bluetooth modem, then get the PDA to talk wirelessly to the phone. Then you would not need a PDA card, and could use it with a laptop as well.

I reread that post, and realize it is barely coherent without some definitions.

1) WiFi is 802.11 technology, typically a wireless access point dropped onto an existing wired ethernet network. Like the access point you would get from CompUSA. It is adminstered by whoever sets it up, may or may not be locked, and most of the current "locking" technology is badly flawed such that it can be cracked in a couple hours. Typical range of 802.11 is about the length of a football field, often less. Speed ranges from 1.1 megabits per second (weak signals) up to 52 megabits per second (modern hardware close to you). Typically, you connect at 10mb per second, though that is typically shared with the people around you.

2) HotSpots are organized providers of 802.11 WiFi that are located in common public areas like Starbucks and Airports. You buy a contract with the company setting these up, and connect wherever they put one. So if you want to get online, you go hunt up a starbucks and put yourself there.

3) Wireless internet is provided by the mobile phone companies and uses something like GPRS, a digital cell phone data technology. It typically has the same coverage as cell phones, and some new cell phones can become "modems" for your laptop or PDA via bluetooth wireless. These are very cool, but expensive, and bandwidth can vary wildly and connections (like cell phones) are not the most reliable. If you can't use the cell phone as a modem, it takes special interface cards (usb, compact flash, or PCMCIA) that typically have to be bought from the service provider.

4) Oh yeah! Bluetooth. It is what is called proximity networking, or even a "personal area network". Bluetooth was really designed to replace wires, so it's range is supposed to be limited to maybe 20 feet. It is most commonly used for wireless headsets for car and cell phones, which is cool, but makes for a $100 replacement for a $1 wire.

Hope that is more coherent.

Stealth- so with my home network I can use my PDA no problemo? Right!?! I could even find an unsecured one like Reep discussed and hop on that if wanted.

Reep- thanks for the info. I guess I need to go talk face to face with someone here at T-Mobile/Cingular, etc. that knows what they are talking about. Your explanation was very good. I hope that I can use the Dell anywhere I can receive a cellphone signal. I was hoping the card/technology already inside the PDA would allow the reception of cell signals. Not looking that way though....I don't like the idea of someone going inside my new toy but if they have to they have to. I'm hoping that I can do this for less than $80 a month too!

I'm sure I'm not done yet so thanks for now for everyones input. I'm beginning to get a better grasp on this stuff.

Yea..you will be good togo at home.

Make sure to check the data transfer rates if you sign up for service.
(they are most likely pretty slow)
I doubt they will be able to provide enough bandwidth to make it worth what they charge.

I'm home now, but still busy getting boys ready for band practice ect...
I'll put something up tomorrow.
I thought of the swingarm last night, but getting the swingarm off looks to be a real bitch.
I totally forgot about the wheels, I knew there was something!
I'm in for Sunday, I'll take an early bird flight up to the mountains, and try to make it by one or two. I've GOT to get rid of these hideous chicken strips!
Shred has something up his sleeve for our next meeting, so we'll probably have an off schedule one soon. Ya'll are gonna love it!
