Getting ready to replace the primary shoe on my XB9R 03. My SM indicates that in order to remove the primary cover I must remove the clutch cable.

The instructions for removing the clutch cable indicates I must remove the Outer Ramp and Hook and take apart in order to remove the Cable End and Coupling.

Am I reading this correctly, or are you able to remove the clutch cable form the Outer Ramp and Hook without taking it all apart to do so?

I'm sure there are minor diffrerences between an XB series and a tuber, but you've got it right for a tuber -- I'm guess the same applies to XB series

not really as involved as it seems on reading -- ez job, for sure

I am about to do the same on my 03 XB9S.

Is there any trick to removing the old Primary Gasket and getting the new Primary Gasket to seal properly?

If you have the new metal gaskets, the job is a breeze. If you have the old paper gaskets, throw them away and go get the new metal one.

Actually, I don't know if they even make a paper gasket for the XB primary...

I just finished replacing mine today. Its easy.

Put slack in cable at adjuster in front of engine

Drain fluid

Remove two fairing bolts.

Remove clutch inspection cover.

Remove spring

Turn screw clockwise until nut comes off

Pull outer ramp assembly out and rotate it so the cable hook comes out.

Remove all primary case bolts

loosen cable housing where it enters primary

Rotate primary to remove cable (its easier to spin the primary than the cable)

If your going to replace the shoe, leave the cable hooked up.

When you reassemble the ramp assembly, tighten the screw until it lightly bottoms then turn back a 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

One word of caution I can add to this: be careful with the threaded end of the clutch cable that threads into the primary case. It doesn't take much mishandling or too much torque when tightening it to break it. Very thin walled between the hex head and the threads. It has an o ring there to seal it, gently tighten it, and don't tighten it too much!!
I choose to completely remove the clutch cable from the bike and primary cover before removing the primary cover.
