I am tired... I camped for three nights in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend... yesterday I took a little walk... that was 2+ miles and 1100 feet straight up !!!

I got a late start today because of all the re-packing I did to go on the hike. I had to haul almost a gallon of water up to the trailhead in one of the side bags of the Piglet.

A Mountain Lion was spotted by campers each day I was camped in Big Bend. Someone said the Lion was as big as a greyhound. I camped at the end of the loop, and last night as I was eating my so called 'beef stroganof' dehydrated dinner, I heard a loud purring sound... more than once even and had to go hang out with other campers. So, I did not see the Lion myself, but I did get to keep my dinner, all my fingers and my toes.

Pictures to follow. Texas is great! Big Bend was by far the best stop yet of the trip. DO NOT MISS IT if you are ever in the area...

Oh, the 2+ miles straight down got me... I stepped on a rock wrong and took a little piece of my left palm off... oh well, at least this crash did not involve the Piglet... and it looks like the wound is minor...

170 West of Terlingua...

Hill? What hill? All I see is this cliff...

4

The road between Presidio and Terlingua is a little nerve wracking. Most of the uphills are followed by a very steep downhill, which you have absolutely no view of when you go over the crest. The only problem is that the trough is also usually the creek bed, cemented over. No culverts here... somehow they are just too much trouble in Texas... so you might be heading into sand or gravel when you come down. Lots of fun though, if you don't worry about not seeing where you are heading at 50 mph...

The campground hosts were really nice people and very interested in Piglet... so I made them pose with her...

I think they were glad they had a big 4WD diesel, instead of the lowly burro.

It is very hard to describe how huge the Santa Elena Canyon is... you feel very very small standing next to it...

Can you see the people in this photo? There are four of them climbing the lower cliff face. See them?

The Lost Mine Trail is in the Chisos Mountains, which are volcanic with some intrusives. I was a bad girl and rode to the trail head, about 1/2 mile away, without a helmet, in my tennis shoes and army pants. I was glad I took plenty of water and some gatorade. The grade was really easy. The original trail was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 30's and still retains some of its original stone work.

Today was tough. I guess the hike and the sun and the adrenaline shot when I fell and landed on my hand really took it out of me... oh well.. beautiful day to take a little spin...

Piglet was sad to leave Big Bend and my little spot in Mountain Lion Country... but hopefully we will both be back soon...

Well... if the Navajo 're-post' the job and do NOT offer it to me... then I will be at the Rancho de Road Thing a few days then head down into New Awlins' for some steamed crawdads... kinda got about three to four weeks left of rambling... gonna be over too soon...

If I get a J.O.B. then the trip is over and I go to work like the rest of you sorry schmucks...

Crawdads, crawfish, crayfish, or mudbugs, as opposed to redbugs, which are chiggers.

I haven't seen any vegetation on which a cow could survive in your photos.

We'll be across the lake from Nawlins' in Mandeville next week. Think I'll play my Clifton Chenier CDs on the drive down.

All the rattlesnakes and mountain lions got them. Pity you're going to miss Kilgore. Henrik has never been here either. I know, hard to believe.

Blake,

You could always come down for a night out on the town... or meet up in Austin...

I am happy to announce that I have survived my first night in a real live 'hooker hotel' and officially will be winking at the cute Border Patrol guards in mere minutes here...

Road Thing gave me a good route.

Something I have not seen since San Francisco today... clouds... Wow!!! How little I did miss the clouds in the sky...
