I just got my truck stolen a couple of weeks ago, and heres the story: I've been having Health issues so I havn't been working the last couple of months, so a coworker called me to let me know that he burned some CD's for me and He left them on my desk. So one night I went to go pick up CD's about 1/4mile away from Where I live,by the time I walked in and out of work, approximately 2 minutes the truck was Stolen. Mind you I do live in Northern Minnesota so I did leave it running because it was COLD outside =Below Zero. But I figured I'm just running in and out What's going to happen? So I dialed 911 and before the police got there, My Girlfriend did. I called her right after calling police. She said she was going out looking for it.(whatever)good luck. When the police got there (taking my statement) they got a call from dispatch saying my girlfriend found my truck. So the Police left and I'm thinking to myself great it's probably in a ditch somewhere wrecked etc...
In the meantime I'm still at work waiting to see what happened. Is my girlfriend O.k? Is truck wrecked, It only had 2500 miles on it so it was new. Then my girlfriend pulled into work and told me she found truck down some back road in a nice neighborhood about 1/2 mile away in good condition. So she Blocked it in with the Jeep(Nobody in Truck at time) and went to neighbors house and called police. When the Police left me to go take her statement, the police pulled up behind jeep, where the perps apparently couldn't see the squad, Because while the Police were talking to girlfriend the Dumb asses where getting into the truck and telling Steph to move the Jeep so they can get (THEY'RE) vehicle out. Well obviously the cops busted them right there and then. SO I got my Truck Back that night because they fessed up. So I got the Truck back in one piece, and the bad guys got Busted all within a couple of Hours of the crime taking place. Great Story right? WRONG>Theres a couple of things that still really enrage me. First of all they already inserted there own Cd into my CD player and jamming to their own tunes. So apperently they weren't afraid of getting busted. My Insurance company WOULD NOT have covered me because the truck was running. Then I get a call this morning from the County attourney telling me that the Perps, one Juve and (one adult the one that actually drove=stole car.) are getting One year probation=No jail time. Detterent?Punishment? and that is a State mandate. Nothing County can do about it. In one year it even comes off their record.

Well I guess that's what you get for living in a Bleeding heart liberal State where the Criminals are the real Victims.

P.S I don't live in bad part of town my community is the kind where people don't lock their houses or cars. Well that's obviously changing.

The Justice system Sucks, A parking ticket is at least a fine. Where are the priorities.

my first motorcycle got stolen (from brothers house) the day I got it running when I was 16. I rode it ONCE!

I found tire tracks into the house next door. and my fender in their bushes. cops didn't come for hours. wouldn't search anything.

later I found tire tracks out their back door to alley. never saw it again.

my brother lived next to drug dealers.

was a jack pine penton 125. : (

Team - was that CD an original or a burned CD?
The RIAA might like to see them do some real time.

I jest. But I also do have a hard time gathering up much sympathy for people leaving running cars (sorry). I hope it was a lesson learned.

The Funny thing about that thinking Is if its running it o.k to steal? Then your obviously thinking on the Behalf of the theives, Because when I see a car running I don't think Hmm should I steal this car? If I don't see something locked does that mean it's ok to steal? A thief is a thief I don't care what the circumstance is. When I here that somebodies House is Robbed because it wasn't locked I don't think they got what was coming. I just get mad at the losers that did it. If I did happen to have found those guys stealing my truck believe me they would have prayed that it was the cops that found them. Stealing is taking something without permission. Period. If you lived where I do you would notice everybody leaves their car running in their driveway ect.. to warm them up. But Yeah I guess your right If you are Carjacked and get shot. I guess it's your fault for being in that part of town and that time of day. Get my point. A Victim is Victim or do you Believe if A girl is wearing something a little more sexy and gets raped, do you feel a little less sorry for her? Did I make my point? I'm not trying to be a dick here but if you were in my shoes I'm guessing you would be a little pissed off too. Did I learn A Lesson YES, Did I deserve to get my car Stolen No, right now I'm going through radiation therapy to Shrink a tumor that I have in my Head and on March 18th they are going to try to do surgery to remove it. That's why I haven't been working and that's why I didn't want to get out into the Cold, Would have that have made you feel more sorry for the victim. Huh?

I'm not trying to be a dick either. I don't live where it's mostly okay to leave a car running or leave your house unlocked so I don't really understand the situation were discussing here. My car is locked 100% of the time I'm not in it and about 75% of the time that I am in it.

That said, YES(!) I do feel less sorry for the 15 year old girl that's dressed like a tart that goes into a dark parking garage with a twenty something year old guy she doesn't know, to smoke dope and gets raped than for her twin sister, dressed in Levies and a bulky sweater, that's walking home on a well lit street from a church prayer meeting and suffers the same fate.

Honestly sorry about your loss. Thieves should be shot on sight! No questions asked.

I have a hard time relating to most folks on the list just because I've lived in a rural situation all my life. I've NEVER taken the keys out of a vehicle (or locked my house) EXCEPT when in the city.I did have a pickup borrowed once. We found it the next morning in a town just down the road. Nothing missing or screwed up. The kid that swiped it spent a few days in jail and the rest of his life osterized by the community.

I don't beleive we should have to lock things up to keep them safe. Common decency dictates that you don't fock w/ something that's not your's. If you do then the consequences, whatever they may be, are well deserved. And sometimes those are terminal.

All that aside the biggest problem w/ our country today is a definite lack of responsiblity for our actions (I know, it's a totally over-used expression). Tit for tat and all that jazz. You fock w/ me and I'll fock you back.

A lot of folks might consider that an anarchist opinion, and perhaps it is. Anarchy is not exactly the right way (well correct anyway) to resolve a situation, but it is effective.

Just a few beery thoughts.

I vehemently disagree!!

That is *exactly* the attitude that has brought the US rape stats up to 1 in 5 ... think about that for a second ... 1 in 5 women gets raped in our so-called civilized society. How many women do you know; friends, family etc.? Divide that number by 5 .... scary train of thought isn't it?

It's also that attitude that cause the courts all kinds of trouble trying to lock the rabid animals away (I personally think they should be put down):

"But Your Honor - she was all but asking for it ..." F#%@ that 5hit says I.

I gotta be honest. I'm skeptical about those stats. I suspect they are promulgated by feminist activists and may be of dubious integrity.

And I don't think Ray was contending that the slutty doper girl was asking for it, just that she used very poor judgement and that all things relative, compared to the other case he described he feels a bit less sorry for the irresponsible victim. I concur. We still feel sorry for her, just not quite as sorry. Just like I'd feel less sorry for a guy who got a ticket for wheelying past a marked police car versus one who got the same wheelying past an unmarked car.

Both perps should get the same sentence.

On the rape data... http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_00/xl/00tbl01.xls

Looks like in 2000 there were right around 90,000 rapes reported in America. Considering that there are roughly 145MILLION females in America and that roughly half of them are of an age (12 to 50 years old) that are likely to be targets of rape, that leaves us around 72MILLION potential victims walking around for a window of 38 years each (12yo to 50yo). That amounts to just over one out of a thousand times 38 years for roughly 5 out of a hundred (one in twenty) chance that a woman will be raped during her lifetime.

In reverse, if one in five women were raped that would mean that over that same 38 year period out of the same 72 million women, 14.4 million would be raped which means that nearly 380,000 would need to be raped each year on average. Ain't happening. The true rate is (90,000/380,000)(1/5)= roughly 1/20, the same one in twenty as found above.

How do we get misleading statistics on rape? Consider feminist activist groups like "NOW" who come up with numbers as follows...

quote:

SEXUAL ASSAULT . Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once.

source

No big deal, just magically multiply the estimated rape rate by ten, cause "it is estimated." :/

So the truth is probably somewhere in between the low estimate of 1/20 and 1/5, maybe one in ten? I dunno.

But heres the sad thing, one in twenty is WAY THE HELL TOO MANY!!!!

Can we all please agree on that?

Here's one that will burn your brain... how many BadWeBrs are or have been rapists? Not likely zero is it. : (

Blake (no rapist, has never hit a woman in anger)

PS: Thanks for heating up the topic Henrik. : )

PPS: I seem to recall that rapes are most common in the lower income less well to do inner city areas. The crime happens everywhere for sure, but is most prevalent in the most unfortunate demographic populations.

PPPS: If you were the Ned Beatty character on Deliverance, would you report the incident?

Heard ole Ned as a guest on a radio talk show once. One caller glibly asked Ned if he had rehearsed the love scene much before filming. LOL! Poor Ned failed to acknowledge the joke, instead choosing to stammer out a serious sounding answer. That was a very good laugh.

If you haven't seen the movie Deliverance, well, you'll just have to go rent it, cause I ain't tellin. Just know that you'll never again enjoy "Dueling Banjos" in quite the way same. crazy

Stats like those reported wrt rape come in two buckets (over-simplification, I know, but I'm simple)

Reported rape, and non-reported

I have no doubt that the reported figures are correct within the statistical variance --

I also beleive Henrik's number, as many of these crime are not reported, for clear and obvious reasons --

did the scantily-clad young lady described above display poor judgement? you bet

does the rapist deserve to get off because of her poor judgement? Heck no (watered down to avoid the profanity filter)

no one here is saying that the rapist SHOULD get off, I know, but that's what happens all too often

Henrik's figures mirror my knowledge

as Blake said, 1 in anyting is too damn many -- it should not be tolerated in a civilized society, but then, few would call ours civilized, in this regard, at any rate

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/vsx2.htm

Check out table 3 in the following:

http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/rsarp00.pdf

Note how many rapes are reported by the victims. Total reported plus unreported is 131,950.

Please show me how you get from that to "1 in 5 women are raped." I get closer to 1/14. Show me the math! : )

I'm not 100% sure of my math, so please don't hesitate to hypothesize where it might be in error. I just enjoy figuring out the truth based upon the facts. I certainly am leary of statements like those from NOW that with one fell swoop of the magic estimator come up with such shocking statistics.

FYI: BadWeB is a non-squealing zone.

NOW says... "Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape..."

The DOJ reports that figure to be approximately 48,000 and of those half are not rapes but attempted rapes. (see same table 3 referenced above)

See how misleading the NOW statements might be?

Which is correct? Where does NOW get their statistics?

Team, get a "lazy start". usually about $200 installed. I can drive to where I want, press two buttons on the remote, remove my keys and the truck continues to run. But the instant the brake is depressed, the car shuts down.

I also like getting up in the morning, pressing the buttons, and "VROOOM", it starts up, and is toasty warm in those below zero temps.

Blake -- then stop your squealing, and think about numbers of unreported rapes for five minutes -- you are going down the black hole of numbers and ignoring the reality the ATTMPT to reflect

to add to the original topic, I've had a couple of vehicals stolen -- I was culpable in one case, and not at all in the others -- sad fact is, the great the number of people, the better the cahnce of a knucklehead showing up and doing something stupid --

me, I lock stuff now, even where I likely don't have to

I guess that post was a bit more heated than my posts usually get

And aside from the number juggling I'll side with you on this:

But heres the sad thing, one in twenty is WAY THE HELL TOO MANY!!!!

Only, let me expand that to: "Every single one is one too many"

I read table 1 in your reference: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/rsarp00.pdf

as if they are reporting annual averages? If so, the annual reported average of completed rape against women for the time period of 1992 - 2000 is 140,990/year. If you expand the scope and include attempted rape and sexual assaults you get 366,460/year.

figure 1

Your original math was based on 90,000/year. DOJ apparently has about 140,000 as an average for the 1992 - 2000 time period, or more than 50% more. Using your initial math we're now looking at 1/13 counting reported rapes.

If we were to include attempts (I think it would be appropriate - where is the line drawn between attempt and completed?) we have a 250,000 annual average for the listed time period (vs. your initial math using 90,000/year). Again, using your math we're now at about 1/7. Or one attempted or completed rape every 2 minutes ...

You wouldn't have to stretch the imagination too far wrt. unreported rapes and attempts to actually get to 1/5.

Hmmm actually justed looked at the site closer, I think I am going to go with the stand alone keyless entry/remote starter option. My 2004 Chevy Blazer does not have a keyless entry system and the remote option will be nice for cold mornings. $69.99 not bad even if the dealer offered the option I am sure it would be 10x that amount.

Henrik,

Attempted rapes count as rapes? I believe that to be rape, penetration must be involved. Dude, you are including male victims too.

Come now. You know you look fine in those shorts, but isn't that a bit of a stretch. joker

The 90,000 number was taken from a DOJ report for 2003, not an average of the past decade. There has been a steady decline in violent crime for the past dozen or so years.
