The little retaining nut that holds the tripmeter knob in place on the dash of my 96 S1 missed two header flange nuts, a license plate, and a few other odds and ends so much it decided to join them on the side of the road named God Knows Where. I was going to head over to the dealer to grab one, when the typical scenario ran through my head:
"Hi, I need this part for my Buell"
With a glazed and mildly agitated look, "Oh, ok, I'll take a look, but I'm not a BUELL GUY..."
Having established the parts gentleman's identity, NBG (Not a Buell Guy) will then flip through a series catalogs with remarkable disinterest for twenty minutes hoping I'll get frustrated and leave, so he doesn't have to do anything. I usually crack at 19 minutes and leave, frustrated, not in that particular order.
Anyhoo, if anybody's still reading and hasn't gotten frustrated and left, is there anyone out there that can get me a part number, or happens to have a spare one of these dealies around? Part numbers seem to be the only cure for NBGs, as they only have to maintain a minimal level of interest, and you can often sneak through the whole ordeal without even saying "Buell" which seems to be the operative word in killing any sort of mission success. These NBGs seem to be very skittish creatures and are easily scared off by the "B" word. I seek the part or part number not for me, but for NBGs everywhere, let's not cause them any more stress than is already filling their overtaxed lives.
Thank You and God Bless.

My parts book shows that the nut is not available separately and that the whole assembly 'RESET CABLE ASM., odometer' - part number 67210-73 must be purchased. All is not lost, this easily however - hopefully. Most H-D dealers can now look up individual part numbers for multipart components and get only the part needed. I would hope that this would be the case for this as it is an H-D part.

When you put it back together I would recommend blue loctite if you ever want to remove it as with the blue permabond it is near impossible to remove the nut without damaging it.

I finally relented and now consider the tiny black plastic tie wrap as a lightweight racing upgrade to that nut.

Someone had listed the partnumber for that knob awhile back. Its an individual part number off of a bagger IIRC.

My '98 S1 parts book lists it as,

Reset Knob Assembly. 67420-98Y

Funny thing, they do give a P/N to the cotter pin, but not the retaining nut on the assembly.

Well Oddball, be happy knowing your various parts are now joyfully together again on some unsung stretch of Hwy.

Whooa there buckaroos!
It's a stock Sportster item.
The part number is: #7518

The S1 should be the same as the S2.

BTW, a proper sized O ring also works. Don't ask how I know for sure..... ; )

Brad

(Thanks for the part number Court!)

Tanks a million. Now when I corner an unsuspecting (but still very wily) NBG armed with this sacred number, glazed stare time will have to be reduced to acceptable human levels won't it? Of course HD and Chrome is a word combination that actually makes my wallet weep openly. It's a little embarrassing to tell you the truth. I was going to go with Blake's performance mod myself, but all my zip ties were devoured by "Operation Get The BMW Rebuilt And Out Of The Living Room Before My Wife Kills Me" (or OGTBRAOOTLRBMWKM for short). I was thinking of securing it with Silly Putty, I mean who doesn't have that stuff lying around, but feared it burning up on re-entry. That stuff reeks when it burns... don't ask.

Ahhh.....like contact patch and simple physics, we pass this "unobtanium knurled nut" milepost annually.

Here's the drill boys and girls.....your Buell was designed to periodically shed the nut as a reminder to take 5 minutes and look your Buell over. Shake the front wheel gently, spin and examine the tire, take a close look at the bely and just a general once over.

Look, we tried sheding other parts, but frankly the knurled nut was simple, cheap and could be had at any HD in the world.

One of the unintended benefits was that it allows a Buell owner to periodically take a "service inventory" of their personal parts supply chain.

The entire "how innovative can Buell owners be?" thing was an unintended, but nonetheless, fun by prodcut.

Let me guess.....you also lost the little cover blank on the right hand control of a 1997 S1 and the white wheel plug on a Marchesini wheel?

: )

SAGE ADVISE: Buy 2.

One of the white wheel plugs on the S2 is now a small strip of white electrical tape. ; )

You wouldn't happen to have the part number handy for one of them little plugs, would you?

I know how you feel. I usually have to step behind the counter at my local shop and look at the diagrams with the ladies at the part counter so that I can tell them what part I need. We spent 10 minutes looking for a fairing bolt once because she insisted on doing a search on bolt instead of windscreen.....oh well.

hehe, my tripometer reset knob retaining nut fell off when I first got the bike, I remember riding to work one morning and looking at the speedo and watching it dance across the dash off the bike and into oblivion. guess what ? I just happened to have a chrome bathroom sink feed line nut in my bolt jar that fit perfectly and looks quite snazzy I must say.

Uh oh, Kenb said the c word in relation to a Buell, is that heresy? will he have to be burned at the stake? or will he be given an award for inventive bodging?

By the way NBG in the UK is short for No Bl***y Good, isn't it amazing how one can arrive at the same end point by totally unrelated means!

This is great. Using acronyms brings back fond memories of my military aircraft days (MAD).

Blake if you love acronyms, come & live in France, they're addicted to them, & most of the time it takes longer to work out what it means than it would to read the whole thing!

Turns out there are Universal Truths (UT). Our term is NFG, I'll let you figure it out.
Well FFBPSG, (Fellow Frustrated Buell Part-Seeking Guys), I'm off to the dealer ASAP to talk to the NFG NBG, to get my shiny bit, and a quart of locktite. If I don't post back in a while you'll know it didn't work out and I throttled someone at the dealer with a Genuine Harley Davidson bandana, hanger and all.

The knob is 26.28 Badweb price
The nut is 3.38 Badweb price
I have the nut, would need to order the knob.

Gimme! I just need the nut. Make it two. Incidentally I just called the local Harley dealer (NBD), and asked for the part by number.
"Ok, what's it for?"
"A sportster." says I.
5 minutes of holding, with a part # I thought I had 'em. I mean how can he weasel out of this?
He comes back, "What year of Sportster?"
Damn! He's trained in the advanced NBG techniques, I'd only heard rumours of that level of Buell contempt. He caught me off guard and I lost my nerve.
"Actually it's for a Buell..."
"A Buell?!" You'd think I'd just asked him for a Vincent Black Shadow valve spring...
"We don't carry Buell stuff, sorry buddy."
"Yeah but it's the same as a Spor-" CLICK!
The troglodyte actually hung up on me! Prolly stumbled back to his NBG mouthbreather chat group to laugh about it.
What is so offensive about these bikes? His tone was the same as if I'd asked him for naked pictures of his mother, but why would I when I already have the negatives?

I've got the entire assembly sitting in the top of my toolbox, sent the rest of the dash and all to Ferris a while back. PM me your address, and it's all yours. Mail me something interesting back in return.

You mean I'm NOT!

WTF!

Just kidding.

We had a guy who worked at our shop years ago, he was probably 15-20 years older than me, I was pretty young, 17 I think, and this guy was just amazed at my name. He would ask, 'is that REALLY your name?...wow, that is so cool', is how it would go.

Finally I asked him 'what's the big deal'? He went on to explain that he was a huge hockey fan, and how growing up Tim Horton was his hero.

Of course being born and raised in Long Beach, CA, I was totally oblivious to it all.

He told me I even kinda looked like him, and he seemed genuinely amazed that I DIDN'T play hockey.

Go figure.

I've got one laying around somewhere, too. Bought it at a swapmeet. It's been a standard H-D part since the early stupidgli..er superglide. '72 or so, probably earlier on sportsters.

I had an extra one for my wife's S2T, which is not in our possession anymore. I wasn't paying attention to the date, and the 'part shed timer' went off and the bike spit it into oblivion, right next to that Panhead taillite lens and the Indian kicker pedal I lost out there somewhere.

Go ahead and get the one from Alex, above, and I'll save mine for the next re-opening of this thread, which should simply be titled - "Part #7518"
