Say a prayer.. We've lost another Bueller.. I second Daves with regard to his family..

Judging by one of lines of that story, he wasn't wearing a lid when the accident happened. Sad.

Later,

I wonder how fast he was going? I also wonder if the press is aware that the steering head (thus the handlebar and wheel) is designed to come off like that to preserve the integrity of the fuel tank. That feature makes the wreck seem more catastrophic than it actually was. Helmet probably would have saved him.

Who knows. From the picture, it looked a little like the Surlyn outer airbox was *dented*. Don't know how you can dent that stuff. Hard to tell much from the picture. I tried to find more about him but was not able to get much.

My prayers for him and his family. It happened at 2:30 am as well, I hope he works third shift and was just coming home from work, but one wonders if alcohol was a factor.

The accident spooked a few friends of mine. I live near the accident site and the tv news just reported a rider's death with the picture of the bike in the morning. Spooked them even more as I was in a meeting and didn't answer any of my phones for three hours.

I think I met him once at the taco stand were everyone gathers to ride on Sundays. Most of the time I saw him on the freeway going the other direction. He usually wore a lid.

From what I've been able to find out, the accident investigators think the guy came into the turn too hot, nailed the brakes, and went wide. The bike slammed into the center median and came to a rest some six hundred feet later. It took the police awhile to find the front end. I would say he was going way fast.

We had another cyclist on a 2004 CBR1000R die last Sunday from the same cause. Overcooked the corner, braked too hard, and went wide and off the highway. Neither were licensed and they were on the first bikes they had ever owned.

The newspaper handled the Buell crash right for once. It wasn't a diatribe about demon sportbike riders and the need for a police crackdown. The story was just the facts and the sidebar was a plug for the MSF courses and a few safety tips. The accident investigator quoted in the story is a MSF instructor.

Being a new rider, and on my first bike('03 XB9R), I don't push myself. Glad I waited until I was 28 until I got one. Rode dirt when I was a kid, but my dad never let me ride more. Parents are in the "Funeral" business and I've heard too many stories of the "guy who died on a bike". Being a little older and hopefully more mature, I tend to think about the fact that I'm not rubber. Regardless if he had a lid, or was drinking, let us remember that we should save the extreme riding for the track. Nobody is going to be at your house when you get home telling you "lap times", so it doesn't matter how fast you went through the corners, just that you enjoyed them, and made it home. Take care everyone.
