When I moved here...I felt robbed...like "where are the muggers?

I visited New York for the first time last May and I felt the same way. I live in Minneapolis and have been to Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, LA, London, etc. and I found New York to be like Disneyland! I never felt scared or uncomfortable at all. Everybody seemed really nice except for some crazy people in the Port Authority bus terminal. But they were just crazy and didn't seem too harmful. Of course I was mainly only in the tourist areas but I rode buses and the subway all over the place and never once felt threatened.

I absolutely loved New York by the way! Totally awesome, I can't wait to go back!

I have never owned a handgun but I do own a shotgun and rifle. I have never felt a need to pack "heat" but I do support the right of others to carry a handgun if they want to.

I just finished going through these posts. If you want to own a weapon. Go for it. Doesn't bother me at all. I think everyone who wants to own a weapon should be able to.

I only have one condition/stipulation that I would like to see. I believe that anyone who owns a weapon should be trained in how to properly use the firearm, just like a drivers license, and should pass a test. No one should be allowed to handle a firearm if they don't have the first clue as to what they are doing.

I remember a weapons shoot we once did. We had 50 cal's set up and everyone was given the opportunity to fire off about 20 to 30 rounds each. They give everyone a period of instruction, even if you knew how to handle the weapon, Safety First. Well, this one knucklehead was asked if he had ever fired the weapon before. "Sure have, I know this thing inside and out". So they give him the benefit of the doubt, as they did many others. The jackace gets up there on the berm, the 50 cal is on the tripod, he tilts the barrel forward facing into the berm directly in front of him, and then commences to firing rounds off directly in front of him (luckily, no one was hurt). He got about 4 rounds off then went flying off the berm. The SNCO in charge grabbed the back of his blouse and threw him about ten to fifteen feet away. Almost looked as if he had a cable attached to him and he was being yanked off the berm like a stuntman. What's my point? Knowledge and Responsibility.

On that note, I don't have a problem with teaching children how to properly handle firearms as well. If they are interested, then start teaching them when they're young how to properly handle them and treat them with respect. There's nothing wrong with that.

I don't own a firearm. There have been times that I wanted one, but didn't buy one because I didn't feel I could trust the wife, now ex-wife. So I bought a pellet pistol. Why? What happens when you see someone wield a weapon? 99.9% of the time they think, "Oh crap, they have a gun!" They don't care what they have, they don't bother to look, they just see a gun. That is why I bought the pellet pistol. From a distance, they saw a pistol that looked EXACTLY like a .357. I never kept it loaded either. For the 3 years I owned it, I only had to pull it once. It was at night, we had someone sneaking around the house. I saw them, walked in front of a window so they could see me, carrying the pistol, then I saw them run like the wind.

Do you think you could tell the difference from a distance? How about at night?

They're both pellet pistols.

When I retire from the Corps in a few years I'll probably give in and buy a weapon or two, maybe a shotgun, a pistol, and possibly a rifle. Not sure which models I would want yet. Maybe I'll start taking time to go hunting with my brother-in-law. Another good reason to own a firearm. : )

the marine has a good point it is better to educate your kids how to use and respect a fire arm than hide it from them and stuff like that. The people that do that are the ones that end up with a kid accadently getting shot.

Tis said that twas curiosity that did in the cat.

I tried to remove curiosity, having two sons, with regards to handguns and sex. The two things most likely to seriously alter a young man's life.

Our talks were frank, frequent and worked.

That's just me. . .

Newfie, Rek, Rcket - Show me no disrespect for my beliefs and I'll show you no disrespect for yours.
God forbid your country should ever be attacked, over run, subjugated - you KNOW who has your back.

ROFLMAOI know Montana is way out in the middle of nowhere but I'm pretty sure we're still part of the good ol' USA. Although my "country" is being over-run by citified urbanites seeking to escape the horrors of their warren-like existance. Am I allowed to shoot them? <G>

"With regards to the shotgun thing....it may be true in theory, but as a RESIDENT and DAILY OCCUPANT of NEW YORK CITY, I'd not reccomend walking through the city carrying an 870 with a 20" barrel or Ruger 10/22. But, hey....that's just me. "
-yeah- i WAS a longtime fulltime resident at the time. was a mossberg 500 w/18.5"bbl. as i said, no hassles. i've ridden through the streets with it strapped to my back, too, but in it's soft case.
i had to lug an ak all over eastern europe years back, no hassles there.

I was looking through my States statues on concealed carry today and found that in my state at least, if you have a concealed carry permit, you are allowed to skip any mandatory waiting period when purchasing a firearm. I have never heard of this before and was wondering if anyone else has. This might just convince me to pick my permit up. I hate waiting!

Try www.packing.org for info on your state's carry laws and to find out what states might honor your concealed license. It also lets you know what states will allow you to travel through their state while armed. I use it when planning trips, and yes I have gone out of my way to ensure I travel through states that recognize my right to protect myself.

The New York City regs speak for themselves.....DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.

"only the very rich and politically connected"

You must have the license in your possession when transporting that firearm unloaded and in a locked box to a Gun Range, Gunsmith etc within the city.

If you are just passing through NYC with a firearm it must be unloaded and locked up so as not to be accessible to occupants of the vehicle. If you stop in NYC you could be breaking the laws of NYC.

Federal Law on the Transportation of Firearms. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 926A

History for this field
Must inform Law Enforcement when Carrying
Unknown
Carrying without a Permit/License
Date updated: Thursday, July 8, 2004

Open Carry is illegal in NYC. You must have a special license to legally possess a firearm in your home or business in NYC.

I'd not ever risk trying to take a toy weapon to be repaired. Things, dare I say, in this city are "dicey" at the moment with LOTS of unexperienced folks standing in front of every bridge, tunnel and may buildings with automatic weapons.

I spend a good deal of time at the United Nations and am always fascinated by the folks with AK-47's who speak no English.

You know Court, I wonder why from reading your posts, if gun control appears to work in \ for New York City, a cataclysm of many cultures and diverse religions if ever I saw one, why similar gun control wouldn't work for the rest of the United States. That is, one can't keep one or carry one, right?

I'm also amazed that you openly support allowing fellow Americans the right to bare arms, yet you seem un-trusting of people who speak a foreign language and carry an AK despite the fact they act to keep secure the HQ of the UN. That my friend, on a grander scale, is exactly what the rest of the world sees America as - a nation of gun owners who assume they're the only people in the world the rest of the world should trust in gun ownership. See the problem?

For a guy that's been shot three times, can't carry or own a gun in the city you live in, you seem to be doing pretty well without one.

No rush Sand. I finally got the Wiseco pistons last week, which means I have everything and more that I need. It's just a question of finding some quality time, and space, to put her together again.

The rear AAC cylinder is repaired very nicely. The S&S crank is rebuilt to her former glory, and the new crank cases are sat in a box, all of which are awaiting my attention. No rush. It's cold outside

There are two issues that anti-gun advocates always seems to ignore...
-If you use the law to disarm the populace, only those who FOLLOW the law are disarmed.
-Outlawing guns, just like outlawing anything else, heavily benefits black market-type operations.

Look at gun crimes as a whole. How many guns used in crimes in America were bought at an authorized dealer and properly registered? (I'm looking up the statistics)

---------------
For a guy that's been shot three times, can't carry or own a gun in the city you live in, you seem to be doing pretty well without one.
---------------

Owning a gun isn't about depending on it every day
for your safety, walking around from cover-to-cover with your hand on the grip. It's for that once (or twice) in a lifetime situation where you will need proper protection to get through it with your life.

You hear very little about each time a gun is used in a dangerous situation with a positive outcome. How many times do you hear on the news about Mr. Smith deterring a mugger by declaring he has a firearm?

I can't imagine how many times a gun has tamed a criminal to the point where the situation becomes so minor, that nothing happens and it isn't reported.

If you wanted to rope/rape/kill someone, wouldn't you want it to be illegal for your victims to have a firearm?

court- notice in my unedited responses to your laments about carry in NYC that i DID, indeed, suggest that you get a license (hunting is fine for a scattergun) and tell any interested officer that you are coming from (passing through/transporting) a day of crow shooting with me, upstate. you will also note that i state, (very clearly) to keep the piece in a CASE (obviously locked). thank you for the information regarding your time spent at the UN. that clears everything up. you know, i was penned original draft of the NYS weapons-carry code under the lindsay administration and worked behind the scenes with ed koch in r&d for gun case requirements, before advising rudy g. on which bbl. lengths to ban as part of his 'quality of life' initiatives.
when i was designing the first repeating rifle for winchester ( back in the 1800s) i tested many prototypes of early lever-action models, many of which i still have here in my laboratory, marked "test". my work back in the 19th century behind the scenes qualifies me as THE definitive expert on these matters
why am i always hungry for a cup of name-drop soup, after reading these posts?

Rek,
Does that mean we Newfies can shoot all the American Retirees who are buying up property here on the island looking for a safer way to live out their last days? Hell NO

While browsing a while back I came upon another interesting piece while not totally related goes to the whole "Terror Threat" except this one from beyond your own borders. New Security at US Borders

Maybe a "War on Terror" should come from within and make your cities safer places to live.

Personally I think its only a matter of time before even Natural Born Canadians will be subject to the same scrutiny at the borders. Personally if I have to be fingerprinted (ink or digitally) I will have serious reservations about going into the USA.

This is opening up a whole new set of questions or acusations here one being, If I don't have anything to hide then I should have no objections to being fingerprinted!!!!!

I was amazed that when I pulled up to the border crossing last summer that all the agent had to do was run my license plate number and he could tell me everything but what I had for breakfast that morning. He never did insist on seeing the proper ID I was told was mandatory in order to cross the border. I must have been very un-intimidating looking!!!!!

In my opinion its a basic violation of my rights just as carrying a gun is one of your rights.

I still don't agree with all the guns in the world!!

That's fabulous....

The only similar situation I recall was when Joe Conroy (Topeka concrete contractor) awoke to find kids stealing fuel from his farm tank.

He sneaked out with a shotgun as they were preparing to leave and ye;;ed "everyone out of the van".

When they were out he asked.."anyone else in there?" To which came the reply, "no" just as he put 3 rounds in the Ford E-150 panel van.

The 3rd member of the party dove out the back in the nick of time to wait for police.

Amazing how a couple shots makes your tax dollars work harder.

Not mine but essentially what I have. Best to buy stout optics...these things eat cheap scopes!

Most fun you can have with a firearm, for sure (even more if it was semi-auto).

Mine actually had some issues...like the barrel being improperly headspaced in the receiver, but them guys were very helpful.

No, that is not a ar15 veriant. it is the .50 caliber BMG single shot rifle. It shoots a .50 caliber round and is all in all a kick gun.

That picture doesnt give you a very good idea of just how big this gun is, so here is some more.

Lol, i wish those were my guns. Just an internet friends.

As far as that being an M16 reciever on that .50, no, i dont believe it is. You'll have to ask rick for a definitive answer.

Yes that is a Century G3, chambered in .308.

Yes, .50s do kick like a pig, but most have heavily padded butstocks to absorb the hit. The nice ones have springs installed in the stock, allowing the gun to actually compress and absorb the shock when fired. Flash suppresors and porting helps a lot too.
