Thought I'd show off my nearly completed Redneck Mutant Buell. No doubt I'll get flamed on for it, but what the hell - I'm proud of what I accomplished building it myself. Other than the seat and the pinstriping, I did all the fabrication, body and paint work myself.  Can't wait to get a ride on it sometime here in the next week after I finish the rest of the wiring and install and bleed the brakes. Should be fun with the 109hp 95ft/lbs motor in it from my Cyclone. Best of all I've got less than 6k invested in the entire project. (minus the value of my '99 M2 which I bought new)  Anyway, like I said, it's been a fun summer project that's turned into what I think is a really cool bike. -Justin | ||

Thanks guys, I really debated whether or not I should post any pics of her, given the slamming similar bikes have taken on here as of late. But, I am and always be a Buell enthusiast, not just some johnny-come-lately parts cannibal. I owned my M2 in stock configuration for five years, and with over $3500 worth of motor work I just couldn't see selling her for the $4000-$5000 going rate, so when I saw this option to do something different with the same soul I jumped at the chance. That seat can't be comfy. It's gotta be rough on th jewels. Also, do they make a fuel tank with lines that would compliment the rest of the bike. It looks a little out of place. I have a sportster that I am looking at building into something like this and was just curious about what options you were given. | ||

4gal S1 tank maybe??? I really would not be able to part out a perfectly good M2 or any other Buell. I can see a bike that was wrote off or wrecked. But nice job on that one, I can appreciate your work. What kind of framd did you use? | ||

I like it!  But then again I like things that are different. Why else do you suppose I would drive a 1970 Cadillac Superior Hearse for my primary car? If money were no object, I would be building one myself (as well as a V-Rod chopper - apes and all, and sportbike version of a V-Rod, and the list goes on and on...). I just couldn't justify cutting up a perfectly good Buell to do it. Sweet!, 1313 | ||

Jake, I don't know if the bars would try to hit with the internal stop system that comes with this frame or not, but I think the bigger problem would be mounting the tank itself. The Buell tanks have no defined backbone tunnel, so the tank would just have to kind of sit up on top of the frame. I think you could give it proper stability by fabricating a sub frame similar to the Buell's off the backbone for it to sit on, but I think it might still "sit-up" too much and look funny. Newfie, It's what they call a Redneck Engineering Mutant Buell. They're down in Nix, SC, and have quickly become one of the top two or three custom frame manufactures in the country. Their frames are known for having really good welds and excellent structural rigidity, which was definitely true of the one I got from them. The package I got included the frame, tank, rear fender, oil bag, seat pan, battery tray, and fork stops. I also opted for their top motor mount, license plate holder and shorty kickstand. Honestly your statement about parting out an able bodied Buell is well taken, but the state of the resale market really drove my decision. I originally wanted to sell or trade my M2 in on a new 12S, but nobody was willing to give me anything for it despite the motor work and excellent cosmetic condition. Needing to finance $8000 with my M2 in trade just wasn't making any sense. That and for lack of a better term I was bored. Owning my M2 for 5 years was great and I wouldn't trade any of my time with her for anything, but sometimes you just get the itch to do and have something else, something new. that's a fine looking bike! i personally would never do that for myself (prefer a good handling machine) however my wife is a die hard chopper/cruiser girl and i'd love for her to ride a buell even if it's a chopped buell, hopefully by this time next year i'll be able to start her buell chopper project! what a great value, that's a fine looking custom for cheap cheap! great job! Totally tight - the peanut tank gives it a classic touch, but a Frisco tank would be longer and slimmer holding about the same amount of fuel - a thought - great job - saved every pic - nice details! GT - JBOTDS! EZ  | ||

Here's a couple more pics of the bike from the front   Here's one of the billet sprocket cover I designed for it. I had it powdercoated gloss black and then had my pinstriper lay a bead of red over it to help it stand out. Don't mind all the greasy handprints!  | ||

Here's a couple close-up shots of the paint. My dad and I laid down the black base on which I had Mart Ford pull the stripes you see here. Mart is an old family friend and a bonafide legend in the hot rod world. The guy's been pulling stripes since the late fifties and called both Von Dutch and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth personal friends. Completely amazing to watch the guy work, as he does everything freehand without sketching anything out ahead of time, and of course he pulls all lines with a good well worn brush - none of this line machine s--t - all the while sucking a Marlboro and telling stories of hot rods and rod runs dating back 20 and 30 years before I was born. Hope you like them.   Thanks again for all the kind words, since my wife and I had our first child back on the Aug. 19th, it's been a struggle to make time finish this project up, so it's really gratifying to hear so many people say they dig it so much. I know so many here think it's a waste of an M2 but personally I think it's SWEET! I can see a lot of effort went into keeping in clean and simple...like the Exile bikes. I'd love to have a chopper just like it to complement the XB. Job well done! | ||

Thanks again everyone for your compliments. It's reassuring that people other than me get the minimalist, mono-chromatic look I was going for. Everything you need, absolutely nothing you don't. It's the same bare bones look that drew me to my M2 in the first place. Kind of the blood-stained, brass knuckle antithesis to the chrome-dipped, dime-a-dozen choppers everyone and their brother seems to be building these days. Obviously, I didn't go quite as far as old Russell Mitchell and the boys at Exile, but keeping things clean, simple and sanitary was on my mind at every stage in the build.
