Someone has to buy this bike before I do!

It's a 2004 Ducati ST3 with only 85 miles. It has a salvage title but very little damage. Here's the kicker......$5,500!!!!

Maybe I should sell my S3T (I never thought I'd say those words

Missing mirror, scuffed luggage, scuffed handlebar end weight. Am I missing anything else? $5500? No reason not to buy it. If anything, buff out and repaint the bag and weight, replace the mirror and sell for $11k.

Where did you see that?

I've got about $6K burning a hole in my pocket and I'm dying for a good sport-touring bike so the g/f and I can go on long rides together...

Lake...Jump on it!!!

Just Document the hell out of it via Photos and a notarized statement concerning the bikes condition when you take possession due to the salvage title. You can make some bucks on that one if you ever decide to sell it.

X1- there's a big honkin' dent towards the front on either side of the gas tank, but it still looks like a deal.

If those are dents, they can be blown out, tapped out, filled and made to look like new. Had that done to a bike I messed up in a non-riding accident and you could never tell where the damage was.

Nope, not dents. Here's a picture from Ducati's website:

Put the S3T on the market. I have first right of refusal until the end of this week. Now it's just "wait & see".

Exactly, that's handlebar clearance. Typical on plenty of bikes out there. I only see a missing mirror, scraped up end weight and a scuffed case lid. How could they give that a salvage title?

I considered that bike earlier this year, even over the ST4. Not as peaky but better midrange drivability. Perfect for sport touring. Especially loaded like Jed Clampet's truck.

If you don't know what that looks like on a bike, maybe MikeJ will post his pic.

BTW, don't let anyone scare you with BS about expensive or complicated desmo adjustments. I've seen first hand, earlier this year, that anyone with basic mechanical skills can DIY.

Budo...I'd prefer not to tell at this point. If it doesn't work out for me, I'll post the listing.

Thanks for understanding!

Maybe the salvage title came from an earlier incident and not the current damage that's on the bike. The odometer may read 85 miles but if the bike had been totaled before, the mileage may not be accurate. You may want to find out more about it.

I'm not trying to be a pessimist, just from the "If it's too good to be true" school. Otherwise it is a beautiful bike and if you want it...get it!

In some locations a stolen bike that is recovered AFTER the insurance has cut the check is listed as a Salvage Title.

According to CarFax, the following states use salvage titles to designate stolen vehicles: AZ, FL, GA, IL, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OK and OR.

Dana....it would indeed be a sad day to sell the S3T. But this could be a great way to get a NEW bike at no additional cost to myself. If Lisa would let me, I'd keep both Buells and the Duc: D

Didn't know that. However, it wouldn't hurt to take Tuscon's advice. Go to a Duc dealer and see if they can trace any work that may have been done on it.

I have to agree with Tucsonxb9s on this. I would check it out very carefully. Something seems fishy when it's being sold for less than half price because the mirror is broken off and the luggage is scratched. Now if it was a Buell that'd be different! But a Ducati being sold at such a huge discount? It just sounds too good to be true.

With M2's going for $3500 I'll have mine for the foreseeable future.
By the way, the luggage doesn't go with it. ; )
(I'd probably let the S2 go for that price instead as well. Then I'd get the bagger and hot rod the M2 a bit.)

Lake...Lower a Buell for Lisa and if you can't do that try and get an even trade for a low model.

You may get to keep your cake and eat it too!

Tried that! She didn't bite on having 2 sport touring bikes.

I'll have a definate decision tomorrow after a very detailed inspection. I may buy it and try to resell on ebay for a profit.

I've tried that with my wife...boy that went over like a ton of bricks! There was this sweet Ducati S4R Monster on ebay a while back that went REALLY cheap...like less than $7k or something. I KNOW I could've brought it home and turned it for a profit. Problem was my wife KNEW that I'd bring it home, fall in lust with it, and never get rid of it!! Damn I hate it when she's right!

Never thought of trying to sell a wife on Ebay. Perhaps your opening bid was too high or the "Buy Her Now" attracted the authorities.

There's a Ducati 749R with 2500 miles in the shop here. Easy miles...tires have flat spots right down the center and they still have the tire "whiskers" on the rest! $8800

Went to do a full inspection yesterday. I little pissed about the lack if real information passed on over the phone. The bike may still be a great deal but not for me.

Here the scoop on what most likely happened based on the damage.....It looks like the guy wasn't ready for the torque and power of the Ducati twin motor. He got a little heavy on the throttle and pulled a vertical wheelie. The license plate bracket, tail light and grab bar where busted. Like on the XB9/12S, this is a cast piece. After being vertical, the bike came back down to two wheels (probably in a bike hurry). There's a nice sized dent in the fuel tank that just happened to be the exact same size of my forearm (ouch!!!). From there the bike most likely dropped to the left side. Based on the minimual damage to the bodywork, I'm guessing most of the speed was scrubbed by this time.

My best guess is that there's at least $2K worth of replacement parts needed. Not to mention some paint work (saddle bag).

I guess that just goes to show that I shouldn't even concider selling the Buell: D
