Well we just got back to Appleton.
Had a great day at the track!
No one in our group crashed(probably the only group to be able to claim that)
Our group consisted of,
UWGriz
His freind Rob
Dyna
Johnny from Hoban Brothers
Mike from Millennium
Paul from Waterloo
Me

Pit crew was,
Penny
Bobbie
Heather
Dee
Outrider

I haven't been on the track for almost a year and this was the first time on a 12R. It came back pretty quickly but I was still riding carefully as I set a goal of "not crashing" this year.

I wasn't able to stay ahead if Dyna on his R1 and when he did get by me I was unable to re-pass him. That bike has a lot of "squirt" and no matter how much corner speed I carried it just wasn't enough today.
I only left the track once but I guess it was a pretty impressive save.

I rode one session on Hoban Brother's race Buell!
Thanks John, that was too cool. I didn't get to mix it up with Dyna that session.

I also took Sean, from Edge racing R1 race bike out for a session and a half. What a ball that was! Didn't get to play with Dyna that session either.
I got my revenge on all the riders that had been bus stopping on me in the corner just to out accelerate me down the straight.

So I met my goal of not crashing and having a great tie.
For those you you considering a track day we will be back at Blackhawk on Oct 4th. Call me if you want to sign up!

I'm sure Dyna will have some pictures for us later.

Dave

Just got home a little bit ago....ran into some techinical difficulties..ie my truck puked.

Went to milwaukee afterwards for dinner & to see the grandson. On the way home the fuel pump died & I was only about 15 minutes from home. had to unload the bike, pull the tape off & ride home. Grab my car, call a tow truck, etc.

Fuel pump is dead. Spray starting fluid & she fires right up. No biggie it will get fixed...at least I was almost home.

Track day was great!! These Diablos stick like glue, love the R1...fantastic track bike.

Im beat, will post a few pics later..didnt take many actually since we were too busy riding. 118 track miles total.

1 scary moment for me was that @ssclown on the 748 Duc who thought it was cool to dive on the inside in corners & then run wide on other riders. He took out a guy right in front of me!! I almost ran the guy over as he was tumbling across my path!! I missed him by about 2' or so. I pulled off thet track after that..it shook me up a bit & I was pissed at the Duc rider.

BTW...Blake, you aint got a hope in hell of keeping up with the R1 on the track...race rubber or not. These Diablos stuck like glue all day. The only time I got any wheelspin at all was coming out of turn 5 layed over hard & on the gas during the 1st lap.

I thought it was funny the Griz actually used hos front tire all the way to the edge..no strips left at all, but his rear still has a tiny little bit left. Course he did grind a brand new pair of footpegs into dust. They are about 1/3 smaller now then when he started. Not bad at all for an S3 with 205's on it.

Okay then. I say otherwise. So bring your R1 to Oak Hill and prove it.

Did you grind the tips off your pegs from the extreme lean angles while hanging off? How about the shift lever? You only think you know lean and braking and turn-in. In truth, you don't know . I will lay waste to you. Bring it on tough guy.

One other question... Have you ever lapped a track on racing tires?

Didn't think so.

Race tires are something else... I think the amount of extra speed you can maintain goes up more exponentially than linearly with lean angle... Or at least it's on a curve...

I was getting ZERO tire slip. Race tires would not have allowed me to lean anymore than I already was & my confidence factor was 1000% in them.

BTW...it aint all about leaning either. Had lots of guys who were hanging way off their bikes, dragging elbows, knees, etc. Guess what? I was passing them. Oh and before you ask why would I be passing them, I should be out front the entire time. Myself, Griz & Dave would start out near the back everytime so we had something to gauge ourself against. Picking em off 1 by 1.

The only one in our groups that I couldnt either pass or hang with was Sean..he runs Edge racing school & was on a race prepped 04 R1....he's one smooth & fast rider.

So Road america for next year, or perhaps a track in Colorado??? Remember, I poised the challenge first, my pick of track.: D

Dave, you dont happen to know the addy of that track photographer do you?? I grabbed a sheet but left it in my truck. Want to see what pics he posts in the next day or 2. I wonder if they managed to snap your "airtime"?: D That would be a cool pic on your office wall.

Blake...You aren't going to believe this, but Dyna was the only one on the track that didn't hang off. In fact, he never moved on the bike, just a little up and down movement entering and exiting the turns for braking.

With Bomber's all black leathers on, he had a stoic look about him. (Note: he was on the track and we couldn't hear him speak. LOL) The funny part is I nicknamed him the "Gentleman Racer" as he made Mike (The Bike) Hailwood's riding style look like the Monkey on a Hack. Dyna just looked like he was cruising in the country. LOL

Now for the fun part, when he wakes up, he is going to tell you all about riding in only third gear!!!

Shh, dont even tell him that..LOL

Its true tho, bike was on automatic. 3rd gear was all I needed...coulda kicked up to 4th for the front straight for that last little bit, but was already carrying enough speed it wasnt worth it. Was great that I could concentrate on braking markers & picking my lines. No shifting at all. Jason & Dave were rowing thru the gears wearing their boots out.

And yep..never hang off. Have no need to as of yet. When I start getting passed on a regular basis, then I will will reconsider it. Course everyone knows you cant go fast unless you hang off right??? Hell if Dave didnt hang off, I think he would have ground that left side exhaust tip right off the bike. He looks so damn smooth out there.

I had a great time at the track but have definately found the limit of 205s. Started slipping at little (actually a lot in turn 1 & turn 5 when I got on the gas) so I took a little air out thinkning it might help. Wrong. Way worse. When I slid both ends through turn 7 I decided to I put some back. Yeah, footpegs took a little abuse along with the brake and shift levers. Good thing I put those risers on. My goals were simple - get faster than I was before (I did) and not crash (I didn't). Both Dyna and Dave are pretty damn fast and it was fun trying to stay with them. I just waved bye-bye to Dyna once we hit the straights. I got stuffed once by the Duc Dyna's talking about too. I didn't go down but was still pissed anyway. Nope, Dyna doewsn't hang off at all, but he's still plenty fast. I do and I'm still scraping all sorts of parts. Oh well, the S3 really isn't intended as a track bike.

As for the no chicken strip front, I'm thinking it has to do with my dirt track style during the "low-pressure" session.

Jason is being modest! He ran very well and won the trophy for the "Loudest Bike" in all classes.

Wow, I only read about the D&D's. Now I have heard one at full volume. Didn't have to watch him, we could hear him make his moves. Actually, a good thing for the Photog's as they could hear him coming. LOL

Gearhead,
Paul had his RC there and it was great to see him again. He ran in the novice class so I didn't get to see him on the track.

John, after not being on a racetrack for 8 years is still plenty fast. He ran in the racer group so I didn't get to play with him either(not that I could've)

Sorry that you and Doug couldn't make it, I miss riding with you guys.

Penny just called, her and Bobbie made it all the way to Beaver Dam before the rain started.
Those two just can't catch a break when it comes to getting rained on when they come up to see me.

Bomber...They work the same for you...You achieve the Classic Stoic Look as well.

Additionally, they gave Dyna sort of a stealth look. If it weren't for the custom cut, color coordinated tape on his bike, we never would have seen him coming. Dang, you sure as hell couldn't hear him.

Oh yeah, and the award for the "Sweetest Sounding Bike" at the track day goes to Paul and his RC-51. Now that is a sound track from heaven!!! Even the Duc's were jealous.

Dave...After having the privilege of playing pit crew with Penny and Bobbie yesterday, I know they will make it home in just fine.

If I remember correctly, Penny can be quoted as saying she would rather ride in the rain on her bike than be in a car and Bobbie was right there with her on that one.

Won't post the rest of the quote about how she protests being in a car when she could be riding. It was just too funny and I will leave that for her to post if she wishes too.

You are truly blessed with two fine women in your life.

Before I forget - thanks to the Hobans for having a spare exhaust gasket on hand for when my bike decided that the nuts on the header studs were apparently optional. Coming into turn 3 I couldn't understand why my bike was backfiring which it never does until I was leaned over hard to the right and heard exhaust reverberating off of the pavement. Sometimes my brain works a little slow and I wondered "I could have sworn the outlet was on the left, hey wait a minute..." At least I caught it before the studs broke off.
