I was under the impression that the xr750 engine was no longer in production but Rich King who rides for Harley in AMA flattrack is listed as riding one. Does Harley still make a limited run of these engines or are these all 20 yr old engines with custom replacement parts ? Most of the field is comprised of Harleys and it seems that for an engine that is no longer in production there are a heck of a lot of them still around.

Rich King does indeed thrash the nuts off that XR750 every time he sets out on a track! As does Jay Springsteen, Scott Parker, Kevin Atherton, Terry Poovey, Chris Carr and a whole lot of other fine athletes competing across the U.S.
There are a lot of existing 750 motors in the hands of privateers and sponsored racers...I'm just guessing here, but I would think that HD may have an inventory supply of cases and other necessary bits to keep their team up front and perhaps dole out some parts to other racers. Wouldn't make a lot of sense to let such a fine sport--and the one race game that HD dominates--fade out from lack of motors and go-fast bits.

I sure hope HD doesn't quit any time soon. Word over at the Cycle World bulletin board the last couple of days is that Triumph is going to get back into dirt track racing. Wouldn't that be cool, for there to be some serious competition between brands for a change?

And some of our members get bikes impounded for a simple one wheel trick. It's so unfair.

Glitch:

Yes it will.

The first 50 Buells were delivered with it.

But, trust me. . . you don't want it.

As a owner, PASSIONATE owner, of an XR-1000 that was highly modified, I learned to enjoy the bike during the season and drop it off at Topeka for a total rebuild in the winters. It's a motor that takes LOTS OF LOVE and $$$.

Dyna, if you go, look me up Row 1 on the finish line. It's not the volume of the bikes, as much as it's the quality of the sound. Some of the sweetest music I've ever heard; as well as some of the best racing I've ever watched.

The Short Track is Saturday night, and the Mile is Sunday afternoon. The Short Track has open seating, but the best seats for the Mile are sold by Workman's Harley -Davidson in Rock Falls, IL. Their phone # is(815)626-1213. If I could only see one race for the rest of my life, I'd choose Springfield in a heartbeat.

Hmmm, I might have to think about that myself. I have never been to a dirt track race. Springfield is 524 miles from me. I could take Friday off and make it a four day weekend.

How hard is it to get tickets? I don't want to decide tonight or anything.

Speaking of XR's, here is an XR1000 that I took some pictures of at a (kinda) local bike shops grand opening a couple of weeks ago. I would think the fairly large sized puddles of oil underneath it would seriously make one decide not to use an XR based engine in a regularly ridden bike.
XR1000 nicknamed 'puddles'
And look how creatively I shot the picture so as not to show the license plate

Keep in mind the XR 750 and XR1000 were just barely related... XR 750 heads on a Sportster engine... A magazine at the time called a stock XR 1000 a sheep in wolfs clothing...... Now in the hands of Aaron Wilson that engine can be made to do amazing things......

Coolice,

A race prepped xr750 generates about 110 hp at the crank. Torque is right around 75. At the starting line at springfield and "wet" XR weighs about 314 lbs. A Buell S2 wet weighs about 550 and can generate about 110 hp with not a lot of modification to make it non streetable. The XR's are essentiall two badly vibrating single attached to the same crankshaft. Running it hard will make you feel as if its coming apart, which it is. At Bonneville we had three generations of XR750s. They all were running between 134 to 138 mph. My Buell S2 went 152.438 and could still be ridden on the street as several Rock Island officers could attest. 120 hp Buell can be gotten for about half of what a 100 hp Xr will cost. The advantage the XR has is the capability to loft the front wheel with just throttle at damn near any speed under 80 mph. 80 mph on an XR750 will feel like 170mph on a Hayubusa. The ticket is definitely a lot less. If you want one go for it but it is a money sink worthy of a wooden sailboat.
