Well I went and did it today. I tortured the S1 and will be in need of some parts.

Short and long of it. I hit a stopped car, better than swerving into oncoming traffic. The traffic light went yellow, car was AT the light and decided to stop. Result was me doing a stoppie into the bumper and a kick out. I tucked and rolled across the deck lid and bounced off the pavement, face first. No serious damage to me. I really do appreciate dressing for the fall. A couple of physical bruises and a bruised ego. Leathers and helmet did thier respective jobs. Helmet is now retired! Leathers no worse for the wear. Boots saved my right shin.

First look at the S1, looks to minor cosmetic stuff. My right shin litterly ripped the CF ham can off the bike and bent both mount posts.

My real concern is the fact that the oil filter was pierced by the lower hiem joint bolt.

Be grateful you can take the time to review your unfortunate situation. It sucks to have an oops, it sucks to have damage to the ride, but it really sucks when you get hurt or worse. Hope things recover soon (You & Bike) and remember:

How are the forks/rim/tire???? Any one of those may also be damaged.

As for parts....there are a couple of race air cleaners on ebay right now.

As for the oil filter...I've heard a few stories about them getting dimpled under extreme braking. It would make sense that a SERIOUSLY quick stop would create enough motion to pierce the filter. (For future reference, that movement can be eliminated with a frame brace) I'd make sure to check the torque on all the motor mount points. Also check for any damage to the isolators (front & rear).

I hope you heal quickly!!

Now that the adrenaline has worn off. I am gonna be sore.

Things that worked in my favor:

1) Joe Rocket Blaster boots, especially the right one. Looking at the boot and the knot on my shin. I think the Ham Can studs would have ripped my leg open.
2) Shoei helmet, a sizable scuff on the left temple. Helmet is now retired to a life of luxury.
3) the Leathers, the padding in the left shoulder absorbed the blow in my impromptu tuck and roll.
4) the leathers again, I hit the deck sprawled out like I was doing a belly flop.
5) Joe Rocket gloves, I still have my palms intact.
6) this happened under extreme braking and was a low mph incident

Noting no extreme pains, I was up and standing within the first two minutes. Gloves off and helmet off to clear any cobwebs. I was more concerned about the residents of the car I hit. Three blue hairs were the occupants. I made sure they were in the green and finished checking myself for holes and blood. With none noted I reached down and hit the kill switch. Darn thing was laying there purring and pumping all the life blood out the wounded oil filter.

No accident report required or filed. I bore all the damage. I did leave a scuff of rubber on the bumper though. A cop responded to the motorcycle vs. cage call. He was amazed that I was not dead or dying in the street. He chatted with me about it and ran my license just to boot. I did not even see him pull up as I was on the phone to Roadside Assistance getting a tow home. Which by the way was handled promptly and efficiently.

Obvious damage; front fender is destroyed from the rotation into the bumper, Ham Can is toast, handlebars are tweaked, one CRG mirror glass and some scuff marks on the hardware, tweaked clutch lever, Pro Series toe peg tweaked( did not do any damage to the rear set assembly itself).

Looking at the oil filter damage. It is a slice as if the motor had rotated up and not a direct penetration. This in conjunction with the fully compressed forks seems to be the culprit. Already had a frame brace installed.

The unknowns?

-front wheel/tire/bearings
-forks and head bearings
-front isolator
-front hiem link and hardware
-front motor mount and hardware(who cares! I have a set of XB heads and cyls waiting to get worked over)

I guess I get to start the tear down this coming week

Loki don't forget the head stays, the part of the frame that attaches at the steering. Its possible with the forks compressed as far as suspected some of the impact could have bent them.

Glad to hear you ok, and that your going to be able to ride another day.

Good luck getting yourself and the ride back together. Give the underside of your frame a once over. Apparently Buell's have a little bit of "memory" and will spring back into shape. Mine had a little dimple on the underside around the front cylinder area. Any chance that dimple on your filter be where the front tire hit it?
I had a completely different sort of circumstances but was ready to rebuild it 'cause I had a "killer set of tools", only to be shown the dimples.

Congratulations:
1) On being in dandy shape.
2) For having the wisdom to "dress for fall".

The good news is that this is how some of the great Buell projects start.

Replace the helmet pronto.

Court,

-Dandy but sore
-My neighbor looked at me yesterday and said it was too hot for the gear. To me I feel naked as a jaybird without it. This just reinforces the mind set I have about it.

I had an omen yesterday shortly after leaving the house. I should have turned around then and parked. Four blocks from the house I had a cage come within striking distance of my rear quarter. So intent on making a left turn, never saw me coming head on to her. SHould have turned back then.....

My compliments go out to the tow driver that RA arranged for me. He had seen me after the sudden stop. On another tow at that moment, finished it, went home and came back in his own SUV with a trailer set up for a bike. Hell of a lot better than the large flat bed he had been driving. That is what I call good service. I will be passing on my compliments to RA about this company. The BRAG fees were worth it! The tow allowance covered it completely.

As for the helmet, it was due for retirement this fall. Already picked up a HJC CL14(back-up) and getting an AC11(primary) soonee than expected.

Oc,

I am too. A bunch of sore spots that will get better.

project time is right. I am gonna take the time now to give it a good going over. Time to change the color and make a few upgrades to the engine.

Loki,
One AMT to another, glad to hear you're OK. The bike will be better than ever after you go through it. Did you react on instinct or was Rider Safety involved? Just curious.

There was an out for me but, I was not in a position to use it. My bad for being to close in traffic. My bad for not expecting the unexpected.

dumb luck was at work. Instinct and knowing the bike got me slowed enuff to make the difference. As for the impromtu flight....I believe my left hand was the last to release. My left shoulder blade hit the car first. I rolled left off the car and think I rolled once on the ground. Before going spread eagle. I was up on my knees pretty quick and standing(hunched over) right after that.

My last official act of control was grabbin and stabbin the clutch and brakes. Good thing I concentrate on the two finger over the lever style.

dumb luck since the oncoming traffic was stopped and the cross traffic(from the left) did not yet have a green. I was laying partially in the oncoming lane. My head was that partial though.

Loki - glad you're OK! I'mm sure the S1 will be right as rain again soon, too.

Helmets - I just bought a HJC CL14 Amazon. It fits great, I think the faceshield mechanism needs a little breaking in, and the flat colors on it look amazing. I'm very happy with it.

Loki -- glad to hear you're OK, bud -- if your S doesn't have a frame brace, you likely have no worries on holing the oil filter -- that lil triangle moves around a bit -- I'm making one up for a buddy, and will be happy to make one up for you, while I'm at it (no charge except for materials, as per my normal deal, so this ain't an ad for a revenue-generating activity statement for the board moderators {grin})

Bomber,

Already had a BANKE unit on, just recently at that. Looking at the oil filter and such. The motor rotated up into the slightly compressed front end. The Banke front mount hardware is a tad on the lengthy side and rather close to the filter. Something I filed into the mem banks on install for later correction.
