So does that mean that all of the parts that we put on our Buells (like Race ECM's, aftermarket race pipes, different shock and brake parts, etc) mean that we are molesting our Buells? For shame on you for trying to personalize your ride to the way you want. Just like those old Mustangs that got personalized to their owners likings, why can't we make our rides the way we like? All of you "purists" out there are full of crap!!! Ride what you like, if you don't like what someone else rides, get over yourself!

Sorry to rant, but this strikes a nerve, just about as bad as a HD rider calling jap bikes junk because they aren't "Harley". I say BULL! There are many good bikes out there that fit every person's personal style so let them do what they want to "customize" their ride without criticism from you "holier than though".

Polaris,
Let's say you had a 'tuber M2 you wanted to sell.
Let's say the best you could do in the current market was an offer of $3500 for your M2.
Let's say you could get a frame like the one in the pic you posted for $900.
Let's say you were fairly comfortable using tools and maybe could even do a bit of painting on your own.
Let's say the bike in the pic would sell in the local market for $9000.
Would you then butcher the M2, add in the $900 frame, put in about 40 hours of home/weekend labor, add in less than $100 for paint supplies, and end up selling your former M2 for $9000 when your best previous offer was $3500 allowing for the $1000 added to convert/butcher the M2? Is a $4500 gain worth the 40 or so hours it would take to convert/butcher the bike if you needed or wanted to sell it?

Food for thought. To some extent the market determines what sells and what doesn't. The owner decides at what price or effort they will willingly go to in order to unload their property. At what point does the 4H club winner become sirloin on the plate?

I agree with M1, I have a '74 XLCH 1000 in the original Hi-Fi purple which had been passed around a group of three friends, the only change from stock , after 28 years , when I bought it was an after market coil.

I have since made changes, but only bolt on stuff , i can put it back to stock in half a day.

Bike Week '04
When I buy something I do what I want to with it.
I then suffer the consequences/reap the benefits at a later date. Such is life.

When talking about stock configuration with true restoration folks they will nitpick the slightest details. For example it is very common for old 6-cyl Camaros and Mustangs to have been converted to V8's, which is a big no-no to the restoration folks who will pay a premium for stock original condition or configuration specimins with matching serial numbers and such. A whole different world with them folks. Buells have many years to go before they get too much interest from that realm, but I have seen some activity in that area with specific Buell models in recent years.

no that is not what i mean.. i personally think you should do with your car/bike what you want. To make it your own. But some think that the origonal state is the best... in some cases i agree, i.e. 1971 hemi Cuda... no reason to change that car.. or 1970 LS6 Chavelle, but there are people that like to make their cars their own. The only thing i have a problem with are trailer queens.. they are cars.. DRIVE EM!

Oh yeah, complete agreement on the made to be used so use it philosophy. People don't believe me when I say I'd ride Hal's #8of9 RR1200 if I could somehow end up owning it, but I would.

I used to drag race against a guy who had one of those 'Cudas in my '67 Chevelle SS. Neither car was stock. ; )

Firebolt,
A new engine and forks plus wheels would cost more than the current selling price of the existing already owned bike. Emotions aside - a bike is a bike. Ancient is not part of the concept of custom, the end is the goal itself. A rigid never springs a leak in the rear shock. : )
Just playing the advocate here. Besides, it's not like we're talking about making a collage out of a Bible or something.

When is a Heimholz box a thing of beauty, and when is it a parts bin on the shelf?

What is is, what's done is done, que sera sera.

Spidy, I dig your idea...I've been planning on building a similar bike in the near future...all the guys at work hate the idea...they hate the Buell even more.

It's a shame people are doing that...it is unfortunately about the cheapest, best performing rigid chopper kit out there.

Rick,

My goodness, I think you hit the nail on the head.
