Made it thru the 1000 mile breakin with the R1 without getting nutz or doing anything stupid. Kept the revs down as recommended, etc. Was out in the industrial park near work earlier & figured what the hell, lets hammer this bitch. Nice long straight road about a mile long or so with absolutely no traffic except when the factory gets out.
Took off rather ez & once I got to about 20mph put a little more weight over the front end & twisted the throttle as far as it would go. Front end was dancing lightly on the ground but still maintaining contact, once the tach hit 10K the wheel came up a bit & I leaned forward a bit more & she settled right down. Hit 13K & the bike was pulling like a fricking freight train. just under 100mph, shifted & the front end came up & almost instantly I was at 120mph. I shut her down & pulled over to check my drawers.

I have done wheelies at 50-60 mph but never ever had anything like that at over 100. Good thing is I was actually expecting it so I was ready. What I wasnt ready for was the massive pull that motor makes from 10K & up. Freaking head is still tripping a bit from the rush of it

Suggest you send an E-Mail to Michael Jordon (Ex-Chi-Town Bull) and see if he can get Hane's to make Briefs in CaCa Brown for you! LMAO

Whew, I bet you smelled ripe after that experience.

Rideing something like that makes a person re-evaluate the value of torque doesn't it.

I have never in the past, I can not now, nor will I ever in the future be able to go around corners properly, so my only source of enjoyment is the nearest Freeway on-ramp. I'm telling you brothers and sisters, my next bike will be either a R1 or a Hayabusa. I tend to get more and more stupid as the speed increases but somehow it all seems safe enough when I'm going straight ahead, even if it's only on one wheel.

Uh, radar detectors still work when they are pointed up at 45º don't they?

I was driving behind 2 Hayabusas at night somewhere in Iowa. They had headlights mounted in the belly fairing pointed straight down, casting a halo around their machies as they cruised down the freeway. It took me 20 miles of pondering to figure out why they wanted a headlight pointing straight down.

ROTFLMAO!!!

He never even thought about a Nallin Stage three torque monster did he? He has never ridden an XB has he?

he he he... I love it : ). No need to reevaluate torque.

First think Le-mans then think -

Dodge Viper
Corvette C5R
Lister Storm
Even - Ferrari 550 Maranello

All of these cars have torque engines. Not RPM/HP engines. The only time the world forgets that American Torque isn't the king is when the American's aren't making a racing effort. From what I've been watching from the American auto makers over the last couple years we're about to on all fronts : ). It'll be glorious days in racing again soon my friends : ). Did you know there was a Caterpillar powered diesel running Le-Mans this year? DNF's due to destroyed clutches : ).

Ray, these bikes have torque up the wazoo, its just up higher in the rpm range. Hell at something like 8K this thing is putting down 75ft lbs or so. The shear torque combined with the acceleration will yank the front end without the rider having to do anything. No backing off the throttle & then hitting, no bouncing the front end, etc etc. Just twist the wrist & the front end shoots skyward.

Like I said, the X1 felt pretty damn fast if you pinned it, but I was seriously not ready for the rush when this baby hit between 9&10k. it will put a warp in your mind.

Take anyone of those cars & run it against an F1 & they would be blown away so fast its not funny.

Like I said, the liter bikes have just as much if not more torque than the XB's, its just higher up in the rpm range. Gotta remember this thing will spin to 13,750 rpms. Try that with the V-twin & you gonna have a pile of busted parts.

The only time the world forgets that American Torque isn't the king is when the American's aren't making a racing effort.

Then why isnt Buell racing their bikes in the superbike class against the RR1000's the R1's the Gixxer 1000's? And its a copout to claim the ama bias against them wont allow it. Pure & simple they would be blown away. They are doing rather well against the 600's they are running against, but there is a world of difference between a 600 & a 1000 superbike.

Compare Indy car to Nascar...Nascar has more torque, but Indy cars have the rpms & hp & handling. They did a swap a while back between jeff Gordon & hell I cant remember who, but anyways the indy guy actually did pretty good handling the nascar & ran respectable times, meanwhile Gordon had his hands full with the Indy car beast. Said it was so fast he was overshooting his usual braking markers.

"Take anyone of those cars & run it against an F1 & they would be blown away so fast its not funny."

LOL - Yep, again : ). LOL

Not at the same weight dude... Sure RPM has advantages over torque but the song remains the same. Learn racing history. All the very legendary engines are torque engines (and I'm not talking about Nascar...). Which F1 team has the most torque? Which statistic is MORE closely guarded in F1... HP or Torque?

Hmmm????

he he he : ).

I suppose though... If you're not one to play with an engine then sure, buy one that's already pretty fast. Nitrous and Turbo's are cheating BTW.

Because the Buell engine as shipped isn't designed for racing.

There isn't a "world of difference" between the 600's and 1000's. In any case, a better indication of the quality of an engine is the power and torque to weight ratio. Also, take a look at the area under the torque curve in the used (keep in mind I din't say usable) range.

It was an "F1" guy and his name was Juan Montoya. From Brazil.

In any case, I think you're just trolling now as I KNOW you don't REALLY think those guys that run NASCAR can actually drive a freakin' car... Please. They can drive bricks sure, but not cars. There's a difference.

I wouldn't want any more power either... But I'd want more torque to accompany the power that's there. I'd like it to be packaged better though.

I guess it's just a Pacifico/Bass thing... : ).

M1, anyone who thinks they could just jump into Gordons car & floor it is seriously dillusional. Those guys are superb athletes & their driving ability should not be questioned.

The stuff they do on the track they make look easy, but if we were to try it we wouldnt do any better than if we were trying to win an ama superbike race on an XB9. Would have our collective asses handed to us.

Oh yea as far as power to weight & all that....check out the facts & see which bikes prevail. Dont think you are going to find too many XB's on the list.

And useable torque? have you ever really ridden a modern liter bike? They certainly dont lack for torque thats for sure. Hell I think a Busa puts out some crazy number like 80ft lbs at idle: D Ok well maybe its not that low of an rpm, but its close.

Not 700. Maybe 575 and very light. I understand HP though. I prefer the stuff like Mazda Miata's and Datsun 510's. A dream of mine is to throw my Vortec V-6 (From Sonoma GT #482/806) into a Fiat Abarth. It's not about outright power though. It's about that and driveability. With the cars I mentioned above there's about a 200HP spread. They all set VERY close to the same laps and there's hardly any difference in weight. The high HP cars set the highest LONG STRAIGHT speeds, but the torqier (SP?) cars set the faster times in the slow AND medium length straights. Which type of straights are more prevalent on nearly ALL race tracks?

"their driving ability should not be questioned"

My point was that if you were to hop into an F1 car and a NASCAR for 50 laps you would be MUCH closer to a competitive lap in the NASCAR. It's an easier form.

"Oh yea as far as power to weight & all that..."

Of course, but the XB engines are much farther from their racing counterparts than a top shelf IL4 and there's been a LOT less R&D put into making a good racing engine. There are also quite a bit fewer riders that are capable of utilizing torque instead of HP. It's a slightly different art.

Lister Storms are hand built in Newcastle, England.

TVR's are hand built in Blackpool, England. Both TVR's, running in the production sportscar class, finished in the low 20's at Le Mans.

TVR make their own engines. Modular design, straight 6, V8 or 12.

TVR employ a workforce of around 100 regulars.

A 215mph TVR costs about £40000.

A Ferrari of any persuasion costs more than twice that.

A Lister Storm cost nearly half a million.

Montoya is a Columbian.

Jaguar have just launched their latest performance car, a twin turbo V8 diesel.

A Hayabusa is a somewhat torquey motor for an IL-4, but it only revs to 10G's, unlike the race rep IL-4's coming out of Japan.

An R1 has torque but the question is, can one really feel it? It is torque, but not as we know it Jim

An R1 is fast, but NOT TVR, Lister, Ferrari or Corvette fast. The new Fireblade however, well that's broke 200mph already, and Ten Kate will sell you one for £20000. It's still a Honda though!!

Court, not doing any gearing changes just yet. I did that a few years back to my 550 Kawi & that thing became a major little wheelie monster. Not a whole lot of top end, but would wheelie off idle & for the first 3 gears all day long.

M1,
Try 800 HP. I don't understand the disrespect aimed at NASCAR. How many Winston Cup racers have died in the last ten years versus F1 racers? Get a clue. You may not like the series, but it damn sure is serious racing. I caught some of the Pocono qualifying coverage on Speed Saturday. Some of the Nextel Cup guys were hitting over 200 mph coming into one of the turns then slamming on the brakes. Then during the race, going thru the turns three wide.

Then I caught the Canadian GP. Single file, almost all passing was HP driven or due to pit strategy/times. The drivers push a button on their steering wheel to shift gears. NASCAR drivers have to actually use a clutch and conventional shifter lever. I love both forms of racing, hell I love just about any form of racing. Lose the hate.

I think Jeff Gordon, given a normal shot, would do well in open wheeled racing of any kind.

Dyna,
Please be careful out there. Assuming your bike will be stable when setting the front wheel down at high speed is gambling with your life. Suggest you take that kind of performance investigation to the track.

All,
HP (torque at the rear wheel) rules the race track, period.

Blake, bike comes stock with a steering damper, but I am going to upgrade it. This one is an odd deal that self adjusts itself depending on the speed. So far no issues, but I want to keep it that way.
