Saw this on advrider this morning; claimed to be an e-mail received directly from Erik Buell himself:

From Erik:

Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 2:58 PM
Subject: Re: New 2010 Buell Blast

This is the first appearance of work by Buell’s new advertising agency Crispin Porter (the same folks who do the Burger King campaign, Coke Zero, Volkswagen, etc.). They are known for taking a strong stance in their advertising campaigns. Often irreverent but powerful. They actually work with their clients beyond pure marketing to make product line recommendations and new product development guidance based on their knowledge of consumers. To me, this Buell campaign is clearly a result of the agency saying to Buell, “Hey ... You’re a sport bike company. It’s what you were built on and what you see as your future. Why is this puny, cute little Buell Blast doing in here? It’s completely out of place and sends the wrong message about your brand.” In the same way, the new advertising and online presence is extremely bold and cops and attitude intended to appeal to a younger consumer (Buell, while intended to reach a younger audience has actually appealed primarily to older guys ... Like me). This new approach really lets young, somewhat rebellious (even if they only think they are) sport riders have a brand of their own that is not in the mainstream. I believe this campaign will actually work quite well for Buell.

Check out the “Book of Buell” on the website. I particularly like the product lineup for 2010 — especially the inclusion of the Buell Blast “Cube” as one of the models being offered.

By the way, just as you have forwarded this along, the campaign will also achieve what Crispin Porter and Buell hope it will achieve — a strong viral marketing effort around this crushed Buell Blast concept. It’s the new world of marketing ... And it’s working!

Best,
Erik

Makes sense. There's a lot of younger guys interested in the 1125r. I loved riding it, but it's not the everyday kind of ride I want and right now my next bike needs to tour.

As long as there's a bike line in the Buell line up for this 51-year-old codger (Ss, Xt) he'll work toward buying it. If there isn't, I'll understand.

It isn't the first time in this economy I'll have lost out to the young.

Based on the misspelling I question it.

Erik Buell seldom misspells "an" and very rarely misspells his own name. Note the quote on ADVRIDER is from "Eric Buell".

It makes sense- I can't stand the BK (suggestive and creepy), the Coke Zero (just plain stupid), or the Volkswagen (lame, unimaginative premise) advertising campaigns. It's unfortunate that Buell has to be subjected to this sub-par marketing drivel.

Viral campaign V collateral damage.

The sales figures will tell.

The quote was listed as being from "Erik" but was signed "Best, Eric". I corrected the error in the signature when I cross-posted above.

I just figured the guy transcribed the e-mail he received when he posted it to advrider and he was responsible for the misspellings.

It doesn't even sound like someone discussing their own company. I wonder if it was just some guy names Eric talking about Buell.

"This is the first appearance of work by Buell’s new advertising agency Crispin Porter"

Should read:

This is the first appearance of work by our new advertising agency Crispin Porter

That theme follows throughout the posting. Instead of me, my, and our, the writer is always referring to Buell in the third person.

Unless of course Erik has started taking writing classes from Joe Biden and Bob Dole.

Just a thought - One of the guy's who looks after the Buell facebook and twitter pages is named Eric with a "c".

Eric Schmidt

Who, similarly, seldom spells his name with a "K".

And he is a great guy also. Met him at Road America this year.

I do not know Erik as well as Court but that does not sound like him. Maybe the misspelling is from the transcription but I doubt it. Most people cut and paste that type of stuff. I am doubtful

Whoever wrote it, it seems like a reasonable evaluation of the new ad campaign.

I don't even remember the Coke Zero ads. The BK ads have been alternatively funny and just plain bizarre.

The VW ads crack me up, especially the one with the TDI diesel and the Toyota hybrid, probably because I have a TDI.

If I had your garage I'd sell my television.

Burger King ads are the best. I always get a huge kick out of them... possibly because I kinda' looked like The King back when I had long hair.

Seriously though, I really LOVE what they've done with the Blast page on the Buell site. The features page is hilarious.

Why not just turn the company over to the advertising firm, since they are all-knowing. The day Mr. Buell stops trusting what got him thus far - his own intuition - is the day BMC loses it's way. I'm calling bogus on this one.

I was working at Coke HQ when that crap was released.
One thing the "great ad company" told Coke to do was to give every employee a case of Coke Zero, tell them to have a Zero Party with their friends or family (I thought it was strange they said friends or family), video the event, and bring the video in for them to play with.
No thanks said I, all I had to see was the big ass sign that said, "DO NOT SERVE BEVERAGE AT A TEMP ABOVE 34o"

Did you forget that what got Mr. Buell thus far was to sell BMC to H-D?
