My cousin just called from San Diego, and he rarely calls me, and just made fun of me because he rides a CBR and when he asked me why I rode a Buell, I told him about a year ago that it is a bike to be ridden and not to show and that we are all about riding and do not get sucked into that "squid" mentality...oh well, he visited our beloved Buell.com, saw the BOB and gave me a hard time saying Buell finally is marketing the squid image...what can I say; I agreed with him...expect more mockery from the other brands.....

I've read the Book and I'm not real excited by it. I understand it, though. I ride the UAB (Urban Assault Buell -- also known as a Blast) every day in traffic, on backroads, to the grocery. I don't necessarily hang off it, but I'm aggressively defensive, putting the bike where I want it, when I want it and maybe taking the corners like I own them.

I'm not a sportbike rider.
That being said, the bikes that best fit my needs and they way I ride are Buells, specifically the XB-S series. Not too much horsepower for stop and go and all of the handling characteristics to get you out of trouble fast.

I don't care what other people ride. I make friends with people I like and don't make friends with people I don't like.

What they ride doesn't matter. Who they are does. I don't buy a bike to have instant membership or be a part of a lifestyle.

Riding is not a lifestyle, it's a way of life.

I guess that's the "Book of Rainman Explained" also known as BORE.

Our local "Buell Club" is open to anyone that wants to ride with us...several members are former Buell riders that gave them up from reliability issues...some have never owned one, but plan on it...we have the whole spectrum of bikes from Buells to Ducs, Kawi, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and once a pair of Vespas (ridden by a couple that weekend while their Ducs were down for maint.

We have '25's, XB's, Uly's, Tubers, (and some damn nice ones at that) and me on the Mighty Cube3...I feel sorry for the crew on the next ride...the new Borg technology in my Cube allows warp 15...far faster than the average Federation class bike...that 1098 Duc from last ride has no chance.

Hi all, I'd like to have a T-shirt made where the front says...."Blast From The Past" with a picture of the Blast and the back of the shirt says..."You will never be forgotten my brother" and then have the picture of the other Buell models....

I dont mean to thread jack, i just dont get the HD bashing here. Did Erik sign on with HD as a favor to a friend? Or was it out of necessity? I love my X1 and I love my fatboy, Both for different reasons. I mainly agree with some of Mortarmanmike and a lot of what lemonchilli have to say, the BOB had a attitude that is not my personal style. I love lurking this website and find it very informative and also entertaining. Just dont get how any disagreeable opinion of buell is unacceptable, yet we here take every chance available to bash another brand. Just something I have always wondered about.

I'm not a fan of the Blast ad so I wonder how the "BOB" is going to sit with me.

The written word is such a wonderful yet limited thing. In centuries past, people spoke in such a flighty and long winded way that anyone who cut straight to the point either on paper or in speaking was considered to be a dullard spawned of the most lowly of origins. Good riddance says I to all that but it is undeniable that we have lost a bit of the precision that type of vernacular allowed.

The point is Buell in the past tried to dazzle potential customers with the fundamentals of Erik's genius and innovations which BMC but NO other manufacturer employed. While that was all fine and well for the gear heads and tech junkies out there, it apparently did not make as large a dent in the consumer market as they would have liked. I for one who had followed the evolution of BMC for years in print did NOT consider buying a Buell on the advertising or technical merits but on the endorsement and passion for the product that I first encountered here. Once YOU GUYS got my attention, I returned to the technical achievements Erik had made and saw them in an entirely different light. So now BMC is taking the in your face route which as a Bueller I first found shocking, then after reading again found amusing after finally getting the joke.

Buell is in the business to sell motorcycles period and we can't fault them for trying new ways of doing so however distasteful some of us may find it, BUT,this debate IS VERY worthwhile and useful because we are about as much a barometer for this brand as any and I would bet real money that we are right now providing plenty of feedback to BMC and their advertising firm with this little go around. It's nice to see a thread where every opinion actually has validity.

Keep it going I say.

The "BOB" was nothing spectacular. Just the same ole Buell that I had thought it was. The Blast ad stirred up more feelings of distaste then the "BOB" did, actually the "BOB" didn't draw any reaction from me. It was neither here nor there so to speak.

The one thing that I thought was funny is how Buell has the new slogan as "Ruthless Engineering" but the things they speak of, fuel in frame, perimeter braking, oil in swingarm and underslung exhaust, are all 8 year old designs or older. The underslung exhaust idea is more than 20 years old and a lot of competitors are using the underslung exhaust now. If they are going with the "Ruthless Engineering" then I think they should have unveiled a new component or bike and shouldn't be riding the coat tails of 8 year old designs. That's just me though.

Well said Greenlantern! And an excellent point of badweb as barometer.

I have re-read the BOB several times just in case 'I no read so good' as had been pointed out. Also to see if I was 'only reading what I wanted to read' as likewise had been pointed out. I would like to amend my position on the BOB. It is not nearly as elitist as I'd previously implied. That does not change the fact that had this been the advertising offered when I'd bought my bike - it would have turned me off. I get the impression that if you don't ride your bike at 100% at all times this bike is not for you. In the end it doesn't matter, I'm obviously not the target demographic.

I also think they should have stressed the 'adventure touring' aspects more. It made me question if the X and XT really fit with the company (or the future of the company.)

And I'll still stand by my assertion that the logo page seems like it was lifted straight out of a 'bar and shield' ad.

Good day all.

Don't you think there is a little "in your face" verve from the BOB?

For years Buell has taken crap from EVERYONE. Don't you think there is a little vindication in the race wins and proof of engineering received so far this year?

The demise of the blast could affect wins as the racing goes forward. Id imagine the blast was the premier pit bike for the crew. Who wants to buy a scooter or even walk?

4 race wins does not a company make FT. Where's the Superbike and Sportbike championships to back up this "vindication"? A little early to be giving metric boys a swirly isn't it?

I liked the attitude of BOB, but slamming sportbike riders and basically calling them squids sorta makes Buell look like they're trying to be sportbike Harley's. I agree with Mortar on that.

The prevailing theme throughout is.."We're better than them, don't be them." While I like the toughness and boldness, it's a little egomaniac. And if I were a new customer, I don't think I'd like reading that I shouldn't hang out with my sportbike buddies or they won't like this bike. A huge part in buying a sportbike, or any bike, is the social aspect of it. The rally's, the track days, the sunday burger rides. Not everybody rides a Buell.

Sportbiking is a demographic they should be reaching into, not over. Buell is kinda telling people they're better than that.

Hadn't thought of it that way.
Cool.

It's a start Ed.
However, I do understand your perspective.
I've had an inside on the Buell bikes for a few years now.
When I was told the XB9S was discontinued, I was pretty upset.
Of course I found out after the dealership meeting about the XB9SX.
To Ferris_von_bueller, Randy, and Mortarmanmike120, y'all owe me a keyboard!
Who wants to buy a scooter or even walk?
No one wants to walk! Are you kidding?!
WRT scooters, aptitudes sure have changed.
PitBikes rule though!

I found this on Wiki under Honda. Change the year and company name and that cliche about "coming full circle" exposes itself.

"During the 1960s, when it was a small manufacturer, Honda broke out of the Japanese motorcycle market and began exporting to the US. Taking Honda’s story as an archetype of the smaller manufacturer entering a new market already occupied by highly dominant competitors, the story of their market entry, and their subsequent huge success in the US and around the world, has been the subject of some academic controversy. Competing explanations have been advanced to explain Honda’s strategy and the reasons for their success."

Lonewolf, what part of the squid image is Buell trying to market to?
The one w/the helmet attached to the side of the GSXR while riding?
Or the one with flip-flops on?
Or the one with the sanded off chicken strips?
Or maybe the one with the bikini wearing pillion?

Don't think so...

Buell has had more wins than Honda in Daytona Sport Bike or Superbike.

Should Honda relinquish it's racing heritage?

If four wins isn't enough to start a racing heritage, a year with virtually no wins shouldn't be enough to end a racing heritage.

How many magazines said the perimeter brakes work fine for the street, but a racer would just plow into the wall with them?

How many magazines said the underslung exhaust and emphasis on center of gravity was just a gimmick?

We were excited when a Buell FINISHED a race two years ago. Now we are actually seeing Buells WIN races. Buell didn't just crop up this year from scratch. The elves have been growing this racing heritage for 25 years.

It's time to reap what's been sewn.

Standard joke around here with bike nites. if you see my bike clean and in front of Starbucks... Its been Stolen
Why, cuz I ride the hell outta my bike, cuz I hate their coffee, cuz I am not about standing in a parking lot talking about 'riding' when I can be doing it.

So that I agree with, but really I dont need a neat lil book to hand out and knock on doors.... Have you heard the good news about Buell?
