I guess the time has come for me to see if I like riding solo as much as I do with M2nc. Last Friday Carlos calls me and asks if I want a Blast. No, not really, why? Well he tells me that Webe is going to trade his Blast in on an M2 and if we'd rather buy it for trade value, then it's ours....oh what the hell, buy the Blast!

I figure it will be a great bike for me to learn on and within 2 years Carlee will be 16 and has already made it clear that she wants to learn to ride a streetbike. Now it make perfect sense to buy it now, right?

Best of all, a friend has just completed her MSF course and purchased a used Sportster. We can learn together and ride at our beginner's level speed without boring the snot out of the men in our lives.

So, I've picked up the Motorcyclists' Handbook to read so I can get my permit. I plan to take a course in the Fall...too hot in NC for the summer classes.

I've already told Carlos to put the old scratched up body work back on the Blast until I've gotten some time in under my belt. I won't feel as bad if I drop it with the old body work on it!

Wish me luck and pray for Carlos!

Congratulations Kristi!

You might reconsider putting off the class. You don't want to learn bad habits that you have to "unlearn" later. Heck, I took the class down here in Charleston in August! Of course, I think half the class quit after the first day due to the heat. Maybe you could schedule it somewhere cooler, like Asheville?

Ulywife,

There really is only one problem with the Blast. You'll fall so deeply in love with it you won't want to ever give it up. The Blast is a great little bike.

Have a great time with yours.

Congratulations, Kristi! I hope you get as much enjoyment from riding as I do. The only thing better than having my wife on the back of my bike is having her riding beside me on her own bike. Terri (my wife) got comfortable on her Blast, then moved up to bigger bikes. Her skills improved until she has become the best traveling partner I've ever ridden with.
I think you'll find that the Blast is one of the most beginner friendly motorcycles you could choose. Terri absolutely loved hers.
Good Luck and have fun!

The trick is have him ride behind you - trust me, he'll stay occupied.

Well isn't that special! Now you won't be taking up so much time on the rockers on the porch. You will be out putting on cruiser miles instead!

Perhaps things will keep improving so that we can keep Sandy's Blast, then you will have another riding buddy for Buelltoberfest.

Sandy tells everyone how important the school is for beginning riders, but you know that. Go Kristi!

Carlos, you have only begun to know the meaning of a little prayer before putting on your helmet.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. I'm actually more excited than I thought I would be. I'm hoping to try some basic stop and go Saturday. Of course, I'm not even sure I can reach the ground on the stock seat yet!

Will you be dragging knee at buelltoberfest?

Maybe if we bring the 50 and I'm falling over! I think I'll figure out the flatlands with sweepers before I try Suches. Hell, I haven't even made the loop yet on the Uly!

Vern - I hope things do pick up and Sandy can keep her Blast. You've done such a great job with it's new identity!

What a surprise. We were not looking for a bike, but Webe found a Tuber and was going to trade in the Blast. We have been around this bike for several years now and I have ridden the bike from around town to down the "The Snake". I originally thought this would be a good bike as a daily rider then the Wife threw in the real shocker, "I want the bike in my name." I knew she was thinking about riding her own but did not realize she had made the decision to move forward.

The last ride we took should have told me something. We were riding up in the mountains and I took a wrong turn. The road we were on was a beautiful road with great scenery, a lot of sweepers and elevation changes. It was not too technical so I figured she would enjoy it. Well as we get back to the BRP, we start to descend off the plateau. Anyone who has done this knows every road off the mountain is fun. So we hit a more technical section and I take it at a modest pace since I had precious cargo. We get to our designation and I ask if she was having fun. She told me yes, but when we passed the BRP that was fun. Oh yeah, a Bueller is born.

She has come a long way from that first ride around Suches. I remember getting surprised by an Ess curve. An F-150 coming the other way, I make it through the left and then switch back to the right. As I start to lean it hard right I feel the bike start to stand back up. I realize pretty quick that Kristi is leaning the opposite way and standing the bike back up. Knowing that will put us in the path of the on-coming F-150 I snap the bars throwing her over and I soon get the thigh squeeze. She has come a long way.

So we add a Blast to the stable but it has been around the home stead for some time. Feeling more comfortable on the little Blast, I use it to ride the two little ones around the neighborhood. By the way we have gloves for the them now.

The boy is now five so this should give you a time reference.

That's awesome, guys. Congrats. Sounds like our house...Kim got her license about five years ago, but never rode her old Sporty much. I figured she was one of the ones who wasn't wired for motorcycles and I never pushed. Then I had my get-off last summer and I figured that a) I'd NEVER get her on one, and b) I'd be lucky to have her let me back on one. Well, B was no problem, and she floored me in Feb or Mar of this year when she said she wanted to start riding again. Long story short, found her an M2L about 2 weeks ago (actually, it found us), and off we go to Homecoming in a couple days! (Hopefully she'll have enough practice to be in the front seat for some of the riding).

Too bad you guys aren't closer to MD - the orientation riding could be a 'group thing', LOL. Stay safe, and keep an eye out. Kim's psyched she can join badweb now...but (being a chick) is worried about picking the "right" screenname. LOL. That's my girl : )

A Blast is perfectly capable of knee dragging if you get rid of the Dunlops and put on some GOOD tires (and a few other little tweaks). They are great little bikes with just enough quirks to give them character...they can be ridden pretty fast if you pay attention to your momentum and lines...

I'm roll a stock blast at 75 mph down the highway and up a mountain range and in heavy traffic nearly every day. It will do anything you want it to and easily keep up with the big twins.

A little practice and you'll leave the big twins in curves (except for Ferris Bueller's Road King.)

It's always fun to watch FB&D play with sportbikes on the Parkway! They can't believe they just got passed by a RK riding two-up!

I've decided to take Hugh's advise and see if I can get into a class at the end of June.

GGS!(Get Gear Soon)Don't forget your knee sliders!

We have a good supply of gear here at the house. I have found that I can ride the Uly much longer as long as I have riding pants on. If I get to the point of needing knee sliders, I'll let you know!

Good on ya, Kristi!!

A local rag, "Handlebars" magazine, just did a cover story on women riders- interviewed the wife of a great friend of mine- SHE's a serious rider fo sho!!

Check out the mag online, and run through the most recent back issues: www.fromthehandlebars.com. Good folks, and as of recent, good content!!

One of my old customers who bought a Blast from me (and later totally geeked out on the bike, commuting daily) once recommended Avon tires instead of the stock Dunlops- new Blasts now have Pirelli rubber. Avon is now allowing road hazard guarantees on many of their tires- worth checking out!

Hopefully I'll have something to ride soon...

Anyone interested in buying my old BMW R65? Guess I need to put an ad in the classifieds...

Firebolt - tell your wife to check out this thread, it's for women who ride Blasts! I just checked in there myself. I've not really spent any time in the Thumper Forum as we have two active custodians that "live" there. Guess we'll have three now!

I'd just like to say, for someone who has never ridden or even been around motorcycles before in her life, when I saw Sleez's Buell even before we were dating I knew I loved it. And when we moved in together and he offered to buy me my own bike I was a little scared, but I agreed to give it a try and now I am absolutely head over heals in love with the 2000 Blast he bought me. It's a great bike for beginners. I had no problems at all learning how to ride on my Blast. However, as much as I love my Blast, he is fixing up an M2 he picked up cheap this year and I can't wait to try it out. Who knew motorcycles were so much fun?
