While out in the neighborhood I came upon this.

The investigating fuzz commented the BMW must have been doing 50+

There are NO marks on the curb where it would have jumped it, yet the X5 is perfectly between the trees.

I didn't get a good photo of it, but the top of the tree just exploded from the force. There are bits of tree in a 100ft radius.

So how do you think this happened?

Once again, Glitch has been able to elucidate the incomprehensible.

Or perhaps one might say, explain the inexplicable.

Accurately describe the unknowable.

Whatever.

We are all the better for his knowledge.

I might only add that it is a particularly effective, if expensive way to stop an automobile, and a sure conversation starter.

Am I right, my brothers?

Good parking. It'd keep someone from backing into your bumper.

They better turn off the lights, coming back to a dead battery will ruin your evening out.

Damage like that most likely reflects a speed closer to 25 mph than 50 mph. Poles or trees concentrate load and lead to a lot more local crush than you would see in a vehicle-to-vehicle accident or a barrier impact at the same speed. The vehicle looks to be coming from the sidewalk swerving left, but I wouldn't bet my life on that until I saw other physical evidence. There was almost certainly some vehicle rotation on impact, and perhaps some scuff marks would confirm initial direction of travel.

Young speedy Ent.

My thought, exactly. Obviously the tree jumped out in front of the vehicle. No crosswalk either.

Site the tree for J walking and call the ins co.

Only in Seattle! Probably on the cell phone (texting), reaching for or putting back the Starbucks, fidling with the cd player to advance to the next killer John Mayer track, looking out the windows to make sure someone notices they're rollin' a BMW, and darting out of the way of a skater or a hippie. Also.....I have to ask.....was this a woman? Because then we can add checking themselves out in the rearview.

Rahm did it.

A careful observer might note the right rear tire is flat. Could be part of the cause of the accident or could be the bead popped when the vehicle hopped sideways as a result of the impact.

Interesting photo.

Any lawyers out there? You have a client just standing there. That poor tree is gonna have some serious medical costs to recover. Might even need several amputations to save its life.

i also noticed the rear being flat. I also noticed the passenger mirror dangling. Looks like they jumped the curb and side swiped something(tree?) before losing to this tree!

Loki,
I think the poor tree is gone. You can see it's spirit leaving in the second picture.

It's all the SUV's fault.
If the driver would have been in a SMART car, it would be smaller and would have stopped before hitting said tree.
Problem solved.

After living for many years near a big city, I can give you a quote from a sheriff's deputy commenting on a car stuck through my neighbors fence. "If they steal it, they don't care where they park it!"

I've looked on our local news sources and not one of them has a story on this miraculous parking job.

I did hear from someone that was in the area before me they carried two woman away in stretchers.

Steve is most likely correct on what happened. Something of interest though, the force was strong enough to break the steering box, both wheels are toed in. /-\

Cop might want to borrow my glasses. There's going to be a mark somewhere on that curb, he jumped it somewhere and that tree jumped out in front of him. Is that one of them new security tree barriers? Pops up out of the ground to instantly stop a moving vehicle? : )

There's going to be a mark somewhere on that curb,

I looked and I didn't see any curb mark, which I why I found this incident interesting.

Is that one of them new security tree barriers?
It was in front of the Federal building, so they do have cool disguised barriers.
