I had thought that I was wanting to get a XB9SX, but the XB12XT is growing on me!

I hate the way the front end looks on the uly with a passion and I am not too keen on the back end either except for the things it can do over the lightning, firebolt and 1125 rear ends.

These trips I am talking about will not be that often so I am thinking that the only thing I really like about the uly don't justify my getting it.

I would rather a bike with the looks I like and/or performance. But If I can figure a way to make it a quick swap from the x to ss swap I would definatly go with the ss as I love the looks far more than any of my 4 choices. But the hands down winner would be the 1125 if there was a way to put wife plus bag comfortably on the back of it and yet take all of that mess off and it look a nice as it does in the 2 configurations that it currently comes in.

It comes down to "capacity". A bike that CAN take long trips with passenger accommodations and luggage is great as long as you USE that capacity.

I bought my Uly with the expectation of long trips with my SO with bags, etc.

My wife and I have NEVER taken a long trip. I have taken 3-4 trips with the bike with bags. They sat in my garage 99% of the time.

So for me, I bought a long haul bike with bags that I never came close to utilizing the "capacity".

In hindsight, I should have bought an SS. If all goes well, it will be my next bike.

I suggest this, buy the bike you will use 95% of the time, the SS, and RENT a Harley bagger or ULY for those times when you want to tour with the wife.

It's the benefit of OWNING the bike with the best use fit for you and RENTING the excess capacity you desire.

If you REALLY like the SS, don't fight it. You will continually look at your bike trying to make it what it isn't.

Just like a woman can't change the man she loves, you won't be able to effectively transform your SS into the Uly you want.

+1 into that Ft_Bstrd. I loved the Uly, but due to my finances after getting hosed by my insurance company, I couldn't afford one. Luckly another badwebber was going to trade in his SS for a 1125R, so I bought it off him for a good price.

Long story short, I wasn't happy with it, I missed all the little things of the Uly. Yea I did cross country riding on it as a almost stock SS, but on a long trip I rather had my crap in the hard bags and not strapped to the backseat cramping my room. Also the windshield would of been nice for keeping things out of my face. Then the extra travel in the suspension for soaking up the crap in the road that I am too lazy to steer around.

I took advantage of my situation and decided to do the Uly conversion, it was fun, educational, and frustrating at the same time. It was mostly uncharted water, with only one other person ever doing the swap. I learned a lot and got very personal with my bike, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Best part is, I got the bike now almost exactly how I want it. I am pimping on the only Hero Blue UlySSes. : )

I am astonished by the amount of things some of you stow on a motorcycle. I traveled 6 days living out of a Buell XB9sx tailbag. I had everything I needed and more. However, if I brought my wife I would need all the bags in this thread combined.

Removeable hard bags for an 1125r would be pretty sweet.

I agree if the 1125r had removable hard bags and able to carry the wife with the bags on it.

I guess I have a year and some change to figure out what I want out of my next bike.

The ultimate goal would be to have 3 bikes but I know I cannot afford to buy 2 bikes at the same time (unless I found them for really cheap prices.)

Greenlantern; The bags on the picture I posted are Hepco & Becker 30 liter Junior bags, which are the same as the Buell Outdoorsman bags. H&B make a set of mounting brackets for the S model Lightnings. I bought a set for my wife for Christmas 2007, believing that they would fit the Ss. I had to fabricate a piece for the front of the mounts, and the rest of the brackets fit just fine.
The big disadvantage is that you lose the passenger pegs. If you never carry a passenger, they work well and look good.
Hard bags are addictive, once you've had them on a bike. My wife loves hers.

Is it possible to swap between the side cases for solo trips and the pegs for local two up rides?
