Well since I missed the SCAB ride last weekend I decided to take a ride through Malibu today. Everything was going great until I got on Little Sycamore Canyon Rd. I hit some black gravely sand and low sided at about 35 mph. My Vanson jacket and Held gloves held up great but the draggin jeans didn't do so well not that I was expecting them too but I thought the kevlar would have lasted longer than 30 ft. Here is a pic for those interested on what happens to them after a minor slide. The hole in the kevlar is about 1" dia. They are better than regular jeans but they aren't comparable to real riding pants.
Nice thing was I was able to pick the bike up, bend the shift lever out, and ride home. |

Glad your okay.... I did a little tumble and slide a couple years back.. No where near thirty feet! My levis where shredded 10 times worse. Since then sliders/Draggin Jeans for casual riding and leathers for spirited rides! |

in front of the General Store in Glennville, California is an old picnic table, weathered and battered and barely hanging on for dear life. part of what's keeping it marginally upright are a couple dozen rusty nails, many of them poking out underneath here and there, and one day i unwittingly jabbed my leg - in the fleshy part right above the knee - hard into one of those nails. i was wearing my Draggin' Jeans, and altho the nail easily penetrated the denim, the Kevlar stopped it cold, leaving me with nothing more than a tiny red mark on my leg and a blue curse word on my lips. with regular jeans i'm convinced the nail woulda buried itself in my leg (and perhaps i'd still be there to this day, impaled as it were). the moral of this story? Aerostich when you ride, and Draggin' Jeans only if you're sucking down a cold sarsaparilla at the picnic table in front of the Glennville General Store. seriously, mighty glad you're ok. Ferris |

Glad to hear your OK Brian. We had a guy go down on a VFR on the SCAB ride you missed. It was a day filled with road debris. We missed you an Ozzie on the ride. |

Hhhmmm, this is not encouraging. I thought the Draggins were supposed to be the shizz. I looked at them when I got Chili's riding jeans for him last year, but ended up going with the icons instead. They had good reviews and looked tougher. They are not kevlar, but his cousin aramid. I deal in cut/rip proof materials with work atm, and the kevlar stuff just isn't as good as it is held up to be from experience. They are starting to replace it with tekinogikly better materials that give higher resistance to abrasion as well as cut and tear. Hhhmm, might have to investigate further... |

Thank you for posting the picture. Over here in maryland the MC safety boss is trying to make us wear gear all the time while teaching. Which is stupid because we are standing most of the time and he wants us to suit up for the demos and ride demos with gear from head to toe. Riding gear is made for riding not teaching! I never got the draggin jeans I'd rather wear chaps over jeans for minimal protection. K |

Looks like they did their job compared to normal jeans. I don't see the road rash. I can blow a hole like that in normal jeans just coming off my skateboard. (Message edited by miamiuly on January 19, 2009) |

I'll vouch for the Darien pants. That's what I was wearing on the SCAB ride, although I didn't go down on that ride. But I've been down a couple times before in those pants at low speeds. No damage to me, but one left a nice nickel-sized abrasion to the foam of the TF3 pad and the other left a hole in the cordura by the ankle. Battle scars, my friends! |

It's my understanding that abrasion isn't really Kevlar's strong suite anyway. For puncture damage it kicks butt, but it cuts with a knife. ~SM |

Kevlar is really good for blunt force trama. You can shoot a bullistic vest without penetration, but you can take a sharp pencil and drive it straight through. We sell a product here at work called AbraCor. Its made with Kevlar fibers that are supposed to cut down on abrasive, erosive and friction wear (for mixer blades and dozer buckets...and it works excellent. BUT, its mixed like fiberglass, with a hardener and resin...the Kevlar isn't doing the work by itself. |

I'll be on the next SCAB ride Ken. I was suffering from BOTYflu. Beginning of the year or bitch of the year flu - either way... not good.. Over and done with it now though. Glad to hear you're ok, Brian. |

I have both the Draggin jeans and Draggin denim jacket. I agree that it's a bummer the Kevlar wore through, but I also agree that it's to be expected. I wear mine knowing full well that they aren't "proper" riding gear, but that they are a lot better than Wranglers. Plus, anyone who has ever done the grocery shopping in a full riding suit will appreciate that sometimes it's nice to have some less conspicuous things to wear in the saddle. You didn't list injuries, so I'll assume you walked away more-or-less unscathed. Glad to hear it, and thanks for road-testing the Draggin gear for us! |

I wear a pair of Fieldsheer riding jeans when I ride to work. I don't wear them all of the time because they are cut funny and they are baggy. I am going to look at the Shift jeans this spring. I also wear a set of shin and knee guards I got from Bohn. It can get a little warm in the summer but I like having them. |

Does it really count as a crash if there are no gruesome pics of roadrash? Great you were able to ride away! |

glad to hear you walked (and rode) away. i wear Hood jeans, a UK company. their jeans are similar to draggin jeans, i bought hood as they are made in the UK so decided to do the patriotic kind of thing. this guy on the uk yamaha fazer forum crashed at 90 mph. http://fazerowners.yuku.com/topic/19956 Hood seem to use a different type of kevlar which works better is abrasion rather than impact |

There's a lot of choices when it comes to personal protection. You can say what you want about the Draggin' jeans but it looks like they did their job. That could've been a huge injury to knee otherwise. Glad you rode away. I use and have tested Draggins myself. They're far better than just jeans and not near the hassle of a full riding suit. Since I travel light and dress in layers they are the perfect fit... for me. JB2 |

Only damage to me is a little road rash just below the knee with 2 kind of deep cuts that have been a pain to clean out. Doesn't look impressive. After looking at my gear it looks like I slid on my left arm/shoulder, left leg where the jeans wore through, and ankle where there was second hole in the jeans. The Alpinestars SMX-plus boots kept my ankles and feet safe. I think I'll be looking for a pair of over pants to replace the Draggin Jeans. I guess for the amount I paid for the jeans they did their job <$100 but there is no replacement for good gear. Mtch, looks like those Hood jeans faired much better than the draggins. My Firebolt did pretty well. The only things that ground down are the shifter and bolts, mirror, axle sliders, front directional (still works and I could snap it back together), end of the grip, little bit on the clutch lever, and couple semi light scratches in the rear body work. Frame puck, air and oil cooler scoops weren't touched. If I didn't care what it looked like all I would have to do is replace the shifter. |

I've long admired the Hoods. They're good looking and appear well-made. Nobody stocks them around here, though, and I hate to buy clothes without being able to try them on. Still, they might be worth a blind shot based on those pics from the FZR board. |
