I have the unenviable task of trying to sell a 2001 Blast this spring. The resale value of the Blast appears to be just a bit worse than a Kia Rio. What is my best method? Local newspaper classifieds, Ebay Motors, donate to charity? It's in excellent condition with only 2500 miles, but it's only worth about 1/3 of new price. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2.)College in town? College paper.
3.)Nothings happening in Ebay with those whole, part it out.

Hit all the options. Post an ad on the site here in the bikes for sale section and mention it will go to ebay in a week. Post an ad on any free advertising sites you can find. Then upload an auction on ebay with the reserve set at your minimum acceptable level. And if you're into possible trades then mention that as well. I think your 1/3 of new price may be a bit low, but it would probably sell quickly at that price, probably.

Good news Rocket...I could count the number of chaps on this board (in the USA) who have spent 60 contiguous seconds in the triple digits on one hand.

Buell has, and in my mind rightly so, essentialy proven they are willing to surrender the top end speed of an R1 to be more FUN than an R1.

Just my thoughts, but I'd have no interest in one. Richard, face it, is a master of the straight line and without peer among that group. I'll bet he could ride the twisties too, he simply have no interest and for him the XB platform is like buying a fighter pilot a frickin' ski boat, no?

Court I'm glad you say so - deserving an explanation on my part.

I know I've moaned often about the XB's overall top speed but the above comment based on RICHARD'S FINE ACCOLADES 202.989mph was a joke not intended at the XB's expense given that NO production streetbike (never mind an XB) I know of has officially bettered Richard's 202.989mph (worth remembering - on a BUELL - not a jet fighter).

Made me laugh too your fighter pilot \ freekin ski boat analogy. Sincerely I envy your wit often.

Okay. Would you buy a motorcycle based on it's ability to sustain speeds in excess of 100MPH?

Not to pick nits, but my riding partner, on his highly modified Hayabusa, spends time >150MPH on a section of New York City's FDR drive each day (actually the wee hours of the morning) coming home from his shift as a ConEd Cable Splicer.

He BOUGHT the bike to put in the rotation with his 3 KLR's, Bandit 1200 and 2 Hondas and he bought it BECAUSE he wants to go that fast.

That's fine.

I have, twice in 20 years of Buell riding spent over, for the sake of this conversation let's call it 3 minutes, in excess of 110MPH. In fact the Buell has two places it likes to spend time, one is 80MPH (4,000 RPM) and at 115MPH.

My point is that this constant playground bickering about "my bike has more peak horsepower than yours" becomes quite tiresome.

My criteria, and I spent dearly for it when I built my own Buell (featured in Motorcyclist Magazine) was 40MPH to 80MPH roll-on performance. The performance that Mr. Buell put on, at Daytona Interntional Speedway, as he did the parade lap for the first Buell sponsored race in history, served as "proof of concept". Some commented about the fact that Erik pulled away from the pack of about-to-be racers. His comment was that he "was no limited to 90HP".

I agree with you, my quest for speed has driven me to flight schools, motoryclcle racing schools (I even held a roadracing license one year) and to most the good roads in this country.

My point is that "ultimate top speed", at least to me, is of little concern when buying a motorcycle. I'd submit that to anyone it is, they are most assuredly wasting time on a Buell discussion board.

Which is another reason for a 6 speed. I believe the engine has enough grunt to pull another gear. Having a top speed over 150 is not a bad thing and could change the perception of a Buell being somewhat slow.

And I have spent nearly 60 contiguous minutes at triple digit speeds.....and was passed...more than once!

I assume you'd concede it is quite rare. I've had several such encounters.

FIRST (and old timers will recall the story of Harrison Ford on his BMW, Colleen and David and me being forced to climb a mountain to "earn" my dinner) was near Jackson, WY (Please note the name is NOT Jackson HOLE. "Hole", I was lectured time and time again is a geogrpahic formation like a gully, valley or mountain, that the regsion is known for) and following an early morning (and COLD) photo shoot by a fabled photog. Following out dealings, I was routed from Jackson to Rapid City, SD via a quite interesting series of desolate roads that included Higwhay 26 across the Wind Indian Reservation. This was a very fun day and the day I had the most amazing Buell breakdown ever when the saddlebag mounting tab from a prototype S2 bracket broke off 12 miles out of Riverton. The story of what happened was nothing short of phenominal...remind me to tell you......

The 2nd time when, yes it was a stupid bet but I accepted an offer to go for a run with a fabled Ultra-Marathoner who trained in mountains near Farmington, NM. Dr. Kathy had just returned from winning some 100 mile foot race called a "station run" in some God forsaken dessert and I foolishly dared her. I'd left Buell consultant John Wykof's house in the early hours and the run up Highway 666, well I got carried away. This occured on yet another Indian Reservation...seeing a pattern developing here? I had my ass summarily whipped by the gal who was the cover girl of Runner's World the same month, claiming I'd neglected to "take the altitude into account". Okay, I lied. The best part of this story (and those who have been around for a while may remember the pictures from the magazines of the 2 White S2's outside the Indian Restaurant with the Indian symbols that looked like Nazi symbols photoshopped out) was when Wykof was going to go ahead and set his photo equipment up to capture photo of me, fully laden in touring mode, coming around a corner "very hot". Well, I came around the corner fast, spied John's tripod setup and....well, the rest involved handcuffs and the vigor with John had set out to get to his location. It's ahilarious story, remind me to tell you sometime.

The next time, was heading to the Honda Hoot to meet Gary Cravillion to host Buell Demo Rides. I'd just fueled near Dollywood in Knoxville and had returned to the interstate. Within minutes the rain increased in intensity until it was a full blown level 4 thunderstorm (for level 5 activity see what happened to me a year later leaveing West Memphis after spending an evening listening to Buddy Guy on Beale Street) I came abreast of a Ducati 916 (I seem to attract these people, see the article in Backroads Magazine from Pocono 1997) and a Honda RR900. In about 5MPH increments, we wicked things up a bit at a time until we were at roughly 120MPH in heavy rain and heavy traffic (this was a stupid thing to do) I knew 120 was as fast as the Buell could sustain and I could go no faster so I decided to see how long they'd "play". We spent the next 90 miles, until just outside of Asheville, together. When we parted, I saluted, arrived in Asheville to hear about the "intense law enforcement" to make a point to arriving riders...OOOPS.

The last was well.....here, take a guess.

It's fine Court if you can't take a joke be it at Buell's expense but it goes to show how biased towards Buell you are to the point of ignorance at times.

Fact is whether you like it or not I've been on this board for nearly as many years as you and in that time I could count on one hand too the number of criticism directed towards Buell over the years. In fact there are two just in case you can't use your fingers as an abacus. Reliability and TOP SPEED. Seems the first according to you and others is well taken care of. Comments such as 'well on its way to becoming the (add whatever sycophantic nonsense here)' may well be accurate but one thing's absolutely certain those comments don't apply to top speed and that's the one criticism that's been repeated over and over again - so you needn't bother counting.

Something else. I think I understand perfectly what Buell is doing differently with its unique approach towards performance but in the real world Buell hasn't built a high performance bike in the true sense but rather cleverly they have attempted with some success to change the perception of what constitutes a high performance bike. Not until the day Buell breaks 150mph with a street bike will I ever buy one again no matter how good it looks. I've been there already still have the Buell to prove it but next time around my heartache better be worth at least 150mph. Oh yeah one last thing. Like Glide said having a top speed over 150 is not a bad thing and could change the perception of a Buell being somewhat slow. To true, bragging rights are important in the Squid stakes when you've downed a few with the lads in the boozer. Helps break those misconceived perceptions of Buell's been tractors which you and I both know they are not but my mates who ride proper fast bikes don't. And yes I'm aware that my mates opinions won't matter to you or your buddies, they don't fit the Buell demographic, but their comments are valid if only because it proves the point that Buells have a reputation for been slow. Best way I can see to break those misconceived perceptions of Buells not been high performance bikes would be to make them capable of high speed after all they've got everything else. Would you buy a Ferrari with a VW engine?

Excuse the rant but you piss me off at times especially so when you can't take a bloody joke.

Utah and Nevada....around 1970. We were running that engine at damn near redline and rarely under 90mph. I can still hear the sound that desert jackrabbit made as he tumbled beneath the chasis for what seemed like miles.

It seemed like fun then...but I rather preferred my 150mph blast across one of the local bridges Friday. My wife did 135 to "keep up".

Enough for now. It's 75 out and we're riding. I'll see if I can keep it under 100 today!

I stand by my statement. Greg, when what the last time you spent 15 minutes without the speedo dipping below 100MPH?

How many times have you done it?

Frankly, the internet tends to do motorcycle stories what bars and beer do to penis size.

I agree that Rocket understands just as much as he thinks he does.

I'm not sure my "predisposition toward Buell" has ever been very well concealed or denied.

Court, I will give you the point that I didn't buy Em to spend any amount of time over 100. In fact my self preservation instinct kicks in big time at 100.

I bought Em because it is the best (street) bike I've ever ridden. I spread the gospel of Buell to anyone who will listen. I regularly defend Buell to the uninitiated.

We in the sales world refer to what Buell has done as "moving the goal post". When a computer manufacturer says "We can do it fastest" we say "Is faster more efficient?" Now if only the mainstream media would get the fact that a good track bike isn't necessarily a good street bike.

Court, now all of sudden its 15 minutes instead of the 60 seconds you mentioned.

As far as triple digits for any extended period..hmm well there was the time I was coming thru Utah right outside the salt flats & had the speedo pegged on my Dodge daytona...it read 140..for about 15 minutes or so. Flattest & straightest road I have ever seen.

South Dakota heading towards home & was well over 100 for quite awhile.

And there was the time in Kentucky when I was racing a Dodge shelby & we were both over 130.

I-94 at 3am on my 600 Katana with a hot lil honey on the back screaming for me to go faster. That trip was at 135 mph.

Leaving great lakes dragaway with my CBR600 & my buddy on his 1100 Gixxer, we both hammered it & kept the throttles pegged the entire length of highway KR until we hit I-94, about 5 miles or so..btw he kicked my ass.

Stupid shit in some cases for sure, but point is I am sure there are quite a few other folks here with similar high speed storys. Its quite certain that neither yourself nor Ferris has the market cornered on such exploits.

Ferris, not even worth the effort to stoop to that low of a level.

substitute "race bike" for "track bike" in Jst's comment, I think. And for us mere mortals, I would think the Buell makes an excellent track bike - torguey so you can concentrate on the line and not shifting, forgiving, good brakes, and in many cases reliable and easy to maintain. ( I know, you had a "different" - pun intended - experience with yours)
I've ridden that same stretch of SD. Spent a good deal of time at or over 100. Rather uneventful, really. Boring even. All on a sloooooow S2. And since the original topic was how to sell a Blast, well - keep your fingers crossed for me on the upcoming job interview, and I'll think about buying it. I had to sell mine last year, and I want another one. Bopping back and forth to work on my little cafe-ed Blast was just too much fun.
