got out of the car with my wife to go food shopping when she noticed the t-shirt i was wearing and she gasped "you're not really wearing that in public ?"

i said "yea , you coming or not" . thing is we were up in maine at our camp and that t-shirt got me several thumbs-up and smiles from the folks up there .

now down here in mass where we live i'd be whipped severely by recycled hemp grocery bags for disrespecting the old fart that had just been diagnosed with brain cancer .

personally i loath the %^&*er . if there was any justice he'd be a convicted felon and out of the lime lite years ago . RIP Mary Jo Kopechne .

time and a place for everything . would love to wear that in public here , but couldn't take a chance that one of our customers or potential customers might see it .

I could care less WHO is making the statement.

It's a statement directed at the reader.

I'd be repulsed and avoid any contact.

First impressions are lasting impressions.
You get ONE chance to make a GOOD name for yourself. And to blow it with vile statements?

Wow. I hope you have enough enough sense to not wear that crap around your daughter.

People just don't have much respect for people anymore.

And to be so proud of yourself wearing that stuff is just downright sad.

Umm I may be missing the point here, but what the f*** are you doing riding in a t-shirt! Put a Jacket on dumb*ss! ATGATT

Most of us live in free(ish) countries. If that's what you want to wear, be my guest, it doesn't offend my sensibilities, however it does inform my opinion of the wearer, thus saving me valuable time.

Expressive t-shirts rock! Offensive t-shirts are just that I guess. Offensive to some, not others.
Some of the coolest, funniest, most attention getting, clever t-shirts have no foul language on them, yet some may still find them offensive.
What you wear will always express something about your personality, but they are what they mean to you, not the reader. Much like Art, nobody knows the true message but the artist. (Some cases are a little more obvious though)In saying this, I would always limit my choices based on this one thing..."what if my Mother in law were to see me in this?" Lol!

see, thats another one of those assumtions people jump right into. doesnt really bother me. if i felt like riding in a tshirt i would. its not like i never have.

but if you actually LOOK at things before making those assumtions you would notice the gear sitting on the bikes...

so... you cant even see those shirts when im riding.

Wow. I hope you have enough enough sense to not wear that crap around your daughter.

there are plenty of things i shelter my daughter from. i dont say the kind of mean things about her mom to her like her mom does about me. and i never will no matter how pshyco her mother gets.

if something like one of my shirts is the worst thing my daughter sees than im just fine with that.

my mom and stepdad tried to keep my sister from everything also. she couldnt hardly even watch a pg-13 movie until she was well into her teens. me being the older "bad influence" brother(she's now 18 while im 31) kept telling them that if they isolated her from the real world so much she was going to go over board once she did get out of the house. there were kids i grew up with that had the same kind of up bringing.

well needless to say she got her license and the $hit hit the fan. she was drinking and running around to college parties. even when they took her car and grounded her she would still get picked up when they were gone and go get in trouble. which put me in the situation of being the only one who she would talk to and the one who had to go get her out of those situations she was to nieve(sp) to realize she had gotten herself into until it was to late. she was only allowed to spend the night at my house once while she was growing up. she stayed with me, my wife(now ex) and my daughter. we took her bowling and unded up being at the bowling alley until after midnight. she had a blast, but the next day when she went home i got introuble for her being up so late, ON A WEEKEND NIGHT and she was never allowed to stay again.

but, i went from being the tattooed pierced one my mom tried to keep her away from to the one they depended on to help straighten her out once they realized what was going on.

i guess im different(obviously), my daughter is exposed to plenty of things that i consider normal life(not to drugs or much alcohol as i dont do drugs and i barely drink) but she is also taught how to make educated desicions about those things. i swear, thats just the way i am. woopde do. she on the other hand is not allowed to. she turns 18 and she can make her own educated decision on it, and i wont care if she swears or not. or what she wears for a shirt. i guess im alot more tolerant of stuff that doesnt matter then most people anymore. thats how we and up with all thes stupid rules that everyone bitches about. everyone aparently needs something to whine about.

I would hardly call it whining. And, for the record, I'm not talking about a teen who's not allowed to watch PG-13 movies. I'm talking about a 5 year old who is old enough to sound out words that I'd rather she didn't start to mimic yet. We both drink moderately, she knows what beer is, and maybe has even had a little sip to taste it. So she's not exactly a sheltered little kid.

You raise your kids however you want. But don't refer to me as a whiner because I raise my kids differently from yours. Do I want my 5 year old giving her teacher the finger because she saw it on a T-shirt? No, I do not. THAT would be assumed to be a reflection on ME.

I'm hardly uptight, and you'd have to try harder than that to offend me personally. I work at a Harley dealership for cryin' out loud. But the general rule around here is to keep everything PG-13. My family is here all day, and we want customers to feel comfortable bringing their families in too.

I'm talking about being able to monitor what my young kids see. And T-Shirts with obscenity on them takes that ability away from me simply by walking down the street.

It's disrespectful. That's all I'm saying. Those T-shirts blurt out language that is not generally accepted in polite society in all directions. Boldly. So whatever statement one MEANT to make, my take on it is, the wearer has no respect for me or my family.

For the record, I think that Ted Kennedy gun shirt is freakin' hilarious. I hardly think that will be something that my daughter might repeat.

But a giant middle finger? That's what's referred to as imitatable behavior. And very soon she'll be able to sound out small little four-letter words.

What Would George Carlin Do?

Lenny Bruce?

Sam Kinison?

Richard Pryor?

All of these comic geniuses became very eloquent in their expression of offensive material. The decency police were just waiting for them to open their mouths and say something. Off to jail!

I have a pretty bad T-shirt habit, many of my faves are borderline (or totally) offensive- if I unexpectedly found myself in the company of children, I'd turn the shirt inside out.

In the case of the earlier mentioned 4" tall letters spelling "F-U"- well, that just seems ineloquent.

"In order to teach, one must offend.
In order to learn, one must be offended."

Profanity and its various expressions should serve as the <occasional> spice in our communications and dialogues with one another.

Dammit.

And you would never find me at one of their shows with my kids. Without them, certainly (if they were still alive, that is).

Obscenity certainly has a time and a place. Can be eloquent, can be funny.

And if you go somewhere where you're expecting it, well, then, it's on you.

But walking down the street? Can't anyone see that distinction?

Yeah, Chellem- I'm witcha, to me it's just base. Cheapens the effect for a dullard to express him/herself without much thought on their part for doing so. Much like those common shirts you see "If you can read this the bitch fell off" and the other variations on that theme.

Seeing them lets me know where their general mindset is. Not usually where mine is going, but I try not to judge too much.

Everything in its time and place, agreed.

"Death by Bunga, Bunga", "Too many freaks, not enough circuses", "If it's tourist season, why is it illegal to shoot them", "It's not the jeans that make your ass look fat", "I see drunk people", "Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder" are just some of the shirts I wear on a regular basis. It's no fun if you don't give them something to read...

Thank you for making my point.

None of them would ever been seen, as an example, on prime time network tubavision or something. They appear on cable by and large preceded by a warning.

Don't get me wrong . . . I love wearing my TROJAN CONDOMS "Nice Package" shirt to sex week at school. There is a time and place for everything.

Badweb is the not the place for any of that.

Somewhere I have the original "Parental Advisory Warning" T-Shirt from the 80s. It was true then, its true now, There are bigger fish to fry than an F bomb here or there.
On the other hand, I certainly dont want people to become desensitized to the value of a good well placed strategically dropped fbomb. If you get one from me, you have passed several other conversational warnings that merit your attention.
And to be true, if I really wanted to dress you down and offend you, Russian is much more poignant language for that.

Would Carlin, Pryor, Kennison, et. al. have gone anywhere were they not bathing their humor in adult content?

One of the funniest people I know is Brian Regan. He is a skillful comedian who gets laughs without the blue humor.

I will fight to the death for the right of anyone to wear whatever shirt they want.

I feel, though, that blue humor is the cheapest way to get attention or a laugh.

>>I will fight to the death for the right of anyone to wear whatever shirt they want. <<

You better reconsider that move.
We have decency laws. If it's too blue you will be made to remove it. Particular at the airports. If you refuse you will be detained and fined.

I have no problems at all with any of this. Nothing posted here with the possible exception of the gun one - at the airport - would even be noticed.

The gun motif would probably get your bags searched and that's all.

Rice's would draw more police attention than whatever value he sees in it would be worth. They would just have a friendly chat about it and check all documents and the bike extremely - like extremely - thoroughly for fault. Social conditioning.

Not me. There are far more noble reasons to sacrifice my life than to defend someones right to be an idiot.
