I laid down my Blast yesterday on the way to work. Passing though a construction area there was a section with a lane shift to the right. I was going about 35 MPH when I came to the lane shift, I either hit some gravel or oil. The wheels just plain went out from under me. I fought to maintain control and probably would have been able to hold it up except I ran out of room. I hit an orange A-frame barricade on the way down and came off the bike high side at that point. I remember hitting the road face first and slid for a while on my right side face first. Then I tumbled 3 or 4 times and came to rest on my back in the middle of my lane. I had the presence of mind to look up and make sure I wasn’t gonna get run over but could see that the guy behind me had stopped and was blocking oncoming traffic with his car. That protected me from getting run over as I lay there. I decided to just lay there and wait for EMS to get there. I remember not letting anyone to take off my helmet until EMS got there to do it.

Damage to the body isn’t all that bad. In the ER they x-rayed my chest, neck, head, both hands and my chest area. They also did a CAT scan of my neck and head. The good news is they found no head/neck injuries. There are no broken bones either.

My jacket protected my torso so there is no road rash on my torso and only superficial road rash on my right arm. The back of my left hand is pretty scuffed up and on my right hand one knuckle is messed up but no worse that if a wrench had slipped while working on something. The helmet is pretty chewed up. The ER doctor said that it saved me a traumatic head injury. From the look of my boots, they saved my right foot from some nasty road rash or worse.

The left knee has superficial road rash but isn’t really damaged. The right knee is another story. I’m having a hard time bending it and it hurts like a b@st@rd. I can’t easily walk without a cane. I’ve got a deep road rash right on the knee cap and a minor one just below that on the top of my shin. I’m going to my doctor on Monday to have him look at it. It the same knee I damaged in a fall many years ago.

I don’t know what shape the bike is in but it ended up on its left side about 30 feet from where I landed. I’ll find out when I find where it was towed to.

So the bottom line is that right now I don’t know how bad the bike is. The body is scuffed up a bit and I’m sore all over. Still, I can think of about a dozen other scenarios and all of them are worse than what did happen. I feel like I’m walking away clean. I’m on a mild pain killer so if this isn’t coherent, my apologies.

I’m getting kind of tired. I’m gonna go to bed again.

I'll give you a 9.5.

(.5 deducted for high-siding)

Really only two types of bikers, those who have fallen and those who will.

Now that you have fallen, you might not have to do it again. Just get back at it when you're ready.

Mend well,

Doing pretty good this morning except for my right knee. Something is definitely wrong in there. It hurts bad and doesn't seem willing to bend. I'm using a cane when I do have to move but mostly I'm staying put on the couch and trying not to whine.

Thanks for all the good wishes.

Zane sorry to hear your story.

Glad you are OK, I hope your knee gets better quick, so take it easy for now.

The great news...The Blast can take a licking and keep on ticking, they crash really well and I am sure you wil be pleasantly suprised when you find the lack of damage.

My wife hi-sided her Blast many years ago and I think it was less than $60 and a bunch of scratches that have been ignored.

I think the shifter peg was the most expensive part at about $19.

I don't have photos of the bike yet but there are my wounds and helmet

The back of my left hand. Hurts but isn't that bad

My left knee. Took a hard impact and think the inside is messed up

Guess I need a new helmet

Other than my knee, it's no big deal. I'll have to see what the doctor says about it when I see my regular MD. Son drove my past the crash site on the way home from the ER. They had every thing cleaned up and took away the barricade I hit.

I'm thinking of making the helmet into a wall trophy. It would look cool and remind both me and the boys to always wear a helmet.

Ouch!

Can you give us a better idea of the gear you were and weren't wearing?

I could be wrong, but it looks like you need to look at race style, full gauntlet, armored gloves and overpants with knee pads while you are selecting a new helmet!

Heal well....

I was wearing:

Shoei RF-1000 helmet. It saved me.
Heavy jacket (not armored)
Altima Ultra lite boots.

And yes, like a moron I was only wearing denim jeans.

I'm glad you are relatively ok. I had a similar getoff on my Blast last spring and my knee got the worst of it because I was only wearing jeans. I fell in love with my helmet, even though I had to give it up and get a new one. I'm very fond of my new one, too. The face first concrete dive is normally deadly but I survived and rode the bike home. I LOVE HELMETS! I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE HELMETS!

These things happen. Replace the gear that's lost, get a good jacket and gloves, and a good pair of riding jeans aren't a bad idea.

Through my independent testing I've found that regular jeans are only good for up to around 20-25 mph.

Glad to hear that you're mostly ok. Instead of leathers, I picked up a $12 pair motocross knee/shin guards. They fit under jeans, and no-one can tell you have them on.

+1 on the armored gauntlets.

Well, I got the Blast over to the dealership for an estimate. Doesn't look all that bad to me. Forks "appear" to be straight and the frame didn't seem to take any hard impacts.

Headlight is gone as are both mirrors. Lots of scratches up and down the plastics and the frame is scuffed up kinda bad but no real damage. Needs a new brake lever and brake fluid resevour. The seat also has a big chunk out of it. Lots of nicks and scrapes all up and and

On the plus side it did try to start up when my son hit the starter. I'd venture a guess and say that other than cosmetics, it's still in pretty good shape.

Being an 04 model it might be enough to total her out. We'll have to wait and see what Allstate says. Worse case, they total her out and I have the down payment on a used XT that has been calling my name every time I go in the shop.

Fletcher has a bunch of Buells on the floor right now. There are 8 new ones plus the XT I've been eyeballing and an XB12S that looks show room new.

What does it take to total out a bike. Is it 80% of book value?

If they total it, see if you can buy it back and fix it up. Leave the messed-up plastics, it leads to cool stories.

Yes, Zane, chicks do dig scars. I had a girlfriend dump me for a man who'd been in a chainsaw accident. She couldn't quit talking about "those long scars."

No, I'm not making that up.

I have an MRI scheduled for my knee tomorrow afternoon. I may go back to work for 1/2 a day. I'll see how I feel in the morning.
