Rob (motorcycle.com is one of his sites) is a sponsor here.

Motorcycle.com was completely ruined by the new format. I used to be a paying premium member. It is no longer a daily stopping place when I'm surfing the web.

Yee f'n haw. that is a lil more hill climber than I would go, but I would ride the hell out of that thing. Delicious. Looks like he has the hose and sprinkler set up for making those dirt hills into MUD. OddBall, do you know the source of that pic? I have some tire questions for him.

My bet is that you will enjoy the heck out if it . . it is what it is and HD will make and sell all of them they can. They need this kind of thing at present.

Keep the reports coming.

Court,

At the risk of eating some crow with a sprinkling of humility gravy and a side of "I told you never to buy without a test ride", here's the last chapter in my XR saga:

That bike was built specifically for Seth Enslow to attempt a world record beating jump next year in Nevada. I wonder if he will be wearing Knievel replica leathers as well : )

No crow eating necessary . . . the XR . . well "is what it is". It's far more a styling exercise, and an expensive one, than a performance Harley-Davidson.

I'm a huge fan of the XR's and owned and XR-1000 for several years and I'm just not personally finding the connection.

I think I'd go the Storz route.

I>'m sure, as with most the HD products, that opinions will vary widely.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to say it's strictly a styling exercise. On roads other than a super slab, it should be a pretty competent performer - for a Harley. On the freeway however, it makes the XB12Ss feel (for lack of a better word) "refined".

Have you ridden one Court? The engine bears no resemblance at all to the rest of the Sportster line up, and whilst not a performance bike it is certainly a performance Harley. In fact I cannot think of another stock air cooled H-D that would hold a candle to the XR1200 in performance terms, regardless of cubic capacity.

If it was a purely styling exercise then it is a failure, because it doesn't entirely satisfy either the true flat track lovers or the sports bike brigade.

It is much more than a styling job, so ride one soon : )

I still think that if you slap a small bikini fairing on it, and a set of siamese exhaust it is a better XLCR redux than a XR750. Sat on it. That gear shifter set up looks precarious and fragile. Cant wait to demo one, but I think I will probably end up doing a flat track kit on my paid for 2003 XL883R

I'll concede that it is not ENTIRELY (or I would have said so) a styling exercise and that it will outperform any other air-cooled Harley-Davidson product.

But it is, by their own ad copy "far more" a styling than performance driven effort.

Don't get me wrong . . . I think it's kinda cool. Having owned a "real" XR, it doesn't quite trip my trigger but I am pleased that it'd drawing some positive attention to HD at the moment and hope it's success rises pause for them to step back and maybe divert some of the resources that went to, as an example, the three wheeler.

And I think I will go ride one . . .

Thought you might find this interesting:

"December 1, 2008 - Kenny Pryde

Fancy racing a Harley-Davidson on British tracks? Seriously, the Henderson H-D Trophy will be part of the British superbike championship programme in 2009 ... Scroll down for the full story

Harley-Davidson, which really does have a racing heritage if you look closely, will be part of the British superbike series race programme in 2009. Effectively the Henderson Harley-Davidson XR1200 Trophy will replace the Henderson R1 Cup.

Although the cost of entry is unknown at the moment, your fee will see you keep your XR1200 at the end of the season as well as your BKS suit which comes as part of the package. There will be 10 races at nine rounds. In addition to the standard bike, riders are given Termignoni pipes, an Ohlins rear shock and fork internals, a race conversion kit to improve ground clearance and race brakes pads.

The series ran as part of the Italian national championship in 2008. Until we know the price of the package its rather hard to say if this series will offer good value for money but it should look spectacular, if nothing else."

It would be cool to see a race series like that as part of the AMA. It might even draw some of those folks parading their bikes back and forth on International Speedway Blvd during Bikeweek in to watch some racing. The BMW Boxer Cup that ran a few years ago was some great racing to watch.

I'm a huge fan of the XR's and owned and XR-1000 for several years and I'm just not personally finding the connection.

I am with Court on this one, except my XR is sitting in the garage next to my X1.

In fact I cannot think of another stock air cooled H-D that would hold a candle to the XR1200 in performance terms, regardless of cubic capacity.

I would think an XR1000 could at least "hold a candle to the XR1200"

XR1000 Torque: 70 ft/lbs @ 4400 RPM
XR1200 Torque: 73.91 ft/lbs @ 4000 rpm

XR1000 Dry Weight: 480 lbs
XR1200 Dry Weight: 562 lbs

My XR has the Race Kit (Pistons, Cams, Pipes, and Jetting) that the Factory claims to boost horsepower to 95. The Supertrapp Exhaust is also at least 10 lbs lighter than the stock exhaust. It is a beast, a true hot rod, and the center of attention no matter what it's parked next to.

Link to XR1200 Specs

http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Specs/full_specs/full_specs_09_popup.jsp?locale=en_US&dwp=&market=US&model=xr1200

My XR will be registered as an Antique Motorcycle in 2009. Not much improvement in 25 years of development. You would think the XR1200 should have at least 100+ horsepower from the factory, Buells have for 10 years.

In all fairness the XR1000 was $6995 when the top of the line XLX as $3995. Some XR1000s sat in showrooms and crated in warehouses for 15 to 20 years, until becoming collector's items. Can you imagine what a $20.000 XR1200 would be?

A little history from my archives.

Sorry for the long post, I got carried away.

Mark
