A Ruger super redhawk in .454 Casul, 6 shots, 7 1/2" barrel, and 2 speed loaders. Some states require ammo and gun to be locked in separate containers, you need more than 2 speed loaders in those states.

A .454 Casul will take down a grizzly, more potent than a 12 gage, and you can practice with .45 Long Colt ammo.

Don't let the LEOs see it.

NOTE: Check all local laws where you intend to travel!

A Blackhawk in .45 long colt is a great handgun. If you reload, it's perty sweet.

Not considering taking a handgun:
1. It is a MAJOR pain in the nether regions to get a pistol permit in NY
2. Will be going thru several states, some of which do not have reciprocity
3. If a peace officer were to take one in for an unregistered handgun it could put a major crimp in travel itinerary
4. Plan on avoiding cities & expect no confrontations w/ bipeds
5. Come fall might want to forage (any excuse to hunt birds does fine)
.454 Casull! - We think we might confront a black bear not a grizzley.

I wouldn't want to tick off any kind of bear. Remember if running from a bear go down hill not up. They are quick going up, but clumsy on the way down.

What about a .44 Mag? One of the guns topping my want list is a S&W 329PD.

The Stevens/Savage .22/20 Ga. would be useful. The .410 is too wimpy for reliable bear repellent, it may just make him mad. A 20 ga. is enough. Pistol grip only 12 ga. pumps are for movies & not humans. Hard to aim, hard to hold. ( you really are in greater danger from humans than bears most of the time. 20 ga. slugs & buck work fine. )

Make sure you use good bear country practices, food hung from tree away from camp, no pop tarts in the tents etc.

Avoid stupididity with respect to local laws, the NRA website ( www.nra.org ) has references.

And keep a knife ready in the tent for making a back door.

How about a Taurus Judge! Shoots 410 ga. shotgun shells, and is fairly easily concealable.

For a more concealable weapon I really like the Smith and Wesson Airlights:

edit: Sorry, didn't catch that "no handguns" part

Concerning the NRA list: This link will take you to the state info you will want to look at.

http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/Federal/Read.aspx?id =59

I think lots of state laws ar ghey, so, don't ask don't tell applies at all times. Hey, I don't scream and cry when you ignore the law at 130+. Beretta theme song applies.

Got the answer I really wanted.
Wanted to get a more potent O/U (maybe 22/20ga)- thanks Aesquire -
Figured Mother would be smoked about my buying a "new" gun after getting a scooter.
Now I can blame you guys - thanks again.
Really would like to get a Tarus "Judge".
Wish it was not so difficult to get a permit in NY.
In addition to collecting my fingerprints NY has ballistic fingerprinting - Total crimes solved = 0

Hey Mike, how do you like that Judge? I've had my eye on that for a bit. Just wondering what you thought of it.
