In spite of ourselves at times, we (the US) are considered the best country in the world.

I'm curious. What would we pose is the second best place to live and why?

If I had to chose another country to call home, it'd be Australia. Hobart specifically, if they'd have me. Beautiful place.

Since my Dad's no longer around to disappoint, I'd just go to Georgia, cause it's closer than Alabama or N Carolina. I can spell it and understand the language except for Dalton where I can't read the billboards, but it's not really out in the country anyway.

Sure you are. :-)
You've got a solid #2 so far!

Switzerland would ahead of the US at number 1 in my book, frankly, with Austria at #2.

I love my country dearly and harbour no illusions as to where the best quality of life may be found.

Having lived in Europe, I can contribute to discussions of lifestyle and happiness in given countries, compared and contrasted to the land of the Great Experiment.

I find Poland to be an extraordinarily wonderful place, as well.
Then, again, Samoa is pretty rockin, and Argentina really is a fun place with a high quality of life aspect.
How, exactly, does one quantify a country as being the "best"?

I tell the Britsh guys playing Call of Duty on XBOX, that they'd be speaking German right now if it weren't for the USA.

I agree and pounce upon any chance I can to make this identical statement when I encounter the rare anti-US sentiment, abroad...and it is FAR more rare than many rednecks might otherwise fantasize.
In '02, after a LONG stint in Eastern Europe, I finally was heading home, and, in Ruzyne, I couldn't help overhearing an American couple (It was great to hear American being spoken) chatting with an old Swiss prig.
He asked where they were from, and they said America.
He replied "you don't need to feel embarrassed being Americans", at which point I interjected that, indeed, they should not, for were it not for yanks, the Swiss flag would have a swastika in its center.

A throng of big Russian cabbies (and if you've been to Russia, you understand who they represent) stood up and applauded when I said this, and we shared some Becherovka while sneering at that piece-oshit

"Ironic that it's made in China."

you mean the country that owns our over-leveraged republic?
Remember the old chinese metaphor that describes the difference between hard and soft forms, when you look at how china's approaching its place in the world order.

I'm no snow bunny Tramp - weather is too extreme on the south island for me.

The place is jaw droppingly beautiful in summer however.

The mountains around queenstown are called 'the remarkables' - not without reason.

I know, and I've visited (SI, again) The hermitage....and as I've said, liked Rotorua, once I got past the smell.
Kind of like Venice at low-tide with a subtle nose of chlamydia

How, exactly, does one quantify a country as being the "best"?

Basically because more people want to get here than get out...

But my point in this thread was to engage my wanderlust and think of where else I might want to be. I've said it offhandedly now and then, (and I haven't done well by it) - I don't want to live and die in the same place...

Italy. And more specifically, the Tuscany region.

It is a wonderful place to visit and the only place where I repeatedly experienced having extended conversations where neither of us knew each other's language.
The roads are great!
