Is this some sort of joke? I do not own or have the need to ride with any sort of weapon. I guess Georgia is a dangerous place to live. You might save some money and lives if you move to a more friendly place.Definitely PEACE to you. |

I don't carry. I haven't had a need. There aren't to many people who attack 235lb 6' men riding motorcycles. I would prefer to monkey someone up and flee. I have enough "tools" in the toolbox to do that. |

Brain, inside my head. That being said, if I were to carry, I'd probably get some sort of a shoulder rig to wear underneath my motorcycle gear. The only problem is that, in a get-off, you might get a rib or two broken from the big piece of metal strapped to your side. With a small enough gun and a thick leather holster, it might not be so bad though. Another option, (though I don't know about Georgia laws and how you can carry) is a thigh rig. I used one on my first deployment to carry my 9mm. It works great, is comfortable for all-day wear, and I would think that if you do have a get-off, the gun would only bruise your thigh versus breaking a rib. Also, the gun is then right out in the open to act as a deterrent, if that's your thing. |

I guess I'm in the "I'd choose a safer location to ride in. " category . . . I ride through Harlem and the South Bronx fairly frequently and simply try to always be aware of my surroundings and always maintain at least two options that allow me to leverage being on a bike to my advantage. Sounds gutless, I'll confess, but if I decide to leave or get uneasy, I'm betting on the Buell to be my "protection". |

Ride smart, be aware of your surroundings, use your brain and if you need to run away! Hands, feet, teeth are all viable options, and fight dirty there are no rules in a street fight. Guns, knives, etc require time and thought to produce and use, if you are not practiced a weapon is of little use. If you carry a gun you also have to be mentally able to kill another human being. Must reading for anyone packing is "On Killing" by Dave Grossman. He talks about the psychology of killing a like species, looks at kill rates in war and how we have had to change the way we train our soldiers to kill. He also discusses the impact of video games on young people but that's a topic for a whole other thread. |

+1 What Doon said. I've carried various items for protection from the human species over years of travel. The only time I ever felt the need for a weapon I had my full face in hand and chased off a couple of would be thieves. If you are scared where you are riding, ride somewhere else. I know that I can "F" up every single human I have ever met, without a traditional weapon. That knowledge is all I need. Good luck. |

If you take a knife out of your pocket without the right training, you are more than likely going to find it sticking out of your own chest. I had fairly extensive training with knife fighting in the USMC, and what it taught me more than anything is that adding a knife to a fight isn't good for anyone. Bill |

I carry a throttle and two brakes, the throttle is controlled by one hand and connected to the carb, the brakes are controlled either by the throttle hand or by one foot. Both the brakes and the throttle system are connected to the bike. I hope this answers your question. Any further discussion will quickly get political, and legal, and should probably best be discussed elsewhere by others because due to the results of the recent election I've got nothing to carry and I've got nothing to say and even if I did I sold or lost it years ago someplace else that I can't recall when and where, or words to that effect [(insert appropriate emoticon here] Disclaimer:(the current post is simply for entertainment purposes only and is being used as a dialog study for a future fictional short story or theatric production intended to be presented or portrayed or displayed in an amateur non-professional manner with no real intention of ever generating a profit directly or indirectly if ever presented or portrayed or displayed or if ever attempted to be presented or portrayed or displayed by any people or agencies or groups being either fictional or factual or neither or both.) |

>>>>I had fairly extensive training with knife fighting in the USMC, Could not agree more (based on training at MCRD San Diego). I've been shot and got to witness Jack Eaton, screaming "what the xxx do you want?" as he jumped out of my car and Kenny Baker took a straight razor too him, spalttering enough entails to require 100 stickes from belly btton to near throat. That convinced me I'd, in many cases, rahter be shot than take on a knife. Few folks are capable of both maintaining control of and effectively using a knife at the same time. . . myself at the top of that list. One of the folks here is one of the best in the world at it and, like most such folks, the last one who would talk about it. Traditionally . . I've seemed to end up on the wrong end of guns and knives. |

Caliber Press who does street survival training for cops just extended the effective range of a person with a knife to 24 feet, up from 21. This means a person yielding a knife closer then 24 feet can cut you before you can react and protect yourself. When encountering a person with a knife distance is everything. A survival mindset is vital if you find yourself in a fight, you may get hit, cut or shot but knowing you can work through the pain and win is critical to staying alive. |

I havnt carried a pistol on my bike yet. I try to avoid places where I would need to carry. There are a handful of small pistols you could carry no bigger than a wallet. Lots of options. I dont know Georgias laws but start here: http://www.georgiapacking.org/ |

Can I ask the original poster (SM) why you feel the need to carry personal protection while riding? I'm not trying to be a prick or anything, I honestly want to know. (Message edited by mikef5000 on November 18, 2008) |
