Wes and I were heading out to get a replacement O2 sensor for the dyno and grab a bite of lunch.
We had to go west of the shop to order the sensor and when we came back past the shop there was an M2 lying on it's side in the main highway at the intersection to the shop. I recognized the bike and made a quick scan for the rider. He was lying in the turning lane, face down, not moving. I recognized him and screamed for Wes to turn around. The accident had just happened, no ambulance or LEO had arrived yet. By the time we made a turn at the next light then a uturn then a trip through a couple of parking lots. Ambulane and LEO were getting there.
Turns out that Scott had been thrown into a car in front of him as he was rear ended by an SUV that had been rear ended by a pick up truck pulling a trailer. OUCH.

I was almost sick to my stomach. I held his hand until they could get him into the ambulance. Wes pushed his bike across the highway and over to the shop.

Scott just called me a bit ago from a cell phone evidently...I could barely hear him and he was cutting in and out then the call was dropped. He sounded like maybe they gave him something for pain and he said something about his arm.

I feel very insecure about being on the road. He had absolutely zero warning or control over this situation...

Anyway he needs some well wishes. He will be sad to learn that his bike is trashed.

I wish him well. Glad he wasn't hurt any worse that he was.

Having been recently T-boned by someone running a stop sign, I can identify with your apprehension about being out on the road.

Ouch, sorry to hear but glad he'll be OK.

That's the only scenario that concerns me while on a bike. The rear ender. I ALWAYS ALWAYS look behind me while slowing at a stop sign or light. I like to make that eye contact as if to say "yeah, I'm stopping here and you better also"!

Thanks for posting this, Pammy.
It's really important we all remember these stories and proceed w/vigilance, on our little scoots.

I got knocked over, in traffic, Tuesday, by a freak backing into the highway. I was fine, and who'd notice damage on my ole rat anyway?
My thoughts are with your friend "Scott"

"I ALWAYS ALWAYS look behind me while slowing at a stop sign or light."
As do I. That is what makes this scenerio so scary...if he looked in his rear view, he would have only seen a big ol' SUV that was stopped just like him. He couldn't have seen the pick up truck with trailer, bearing down on them both. It was crazy.

I will let you guys know how he is doing as soon as I find out all the details.

I very rarely drop into neutral at stops or lights & always have an eye in the mirror, for just this reason.
I've seen it happen to a line of cars, when a semi rear-ended them due to a brake-valve failure (I was driving it) nobody hurt but lots of damage.
Rig was just out of the shop, brand new brake valve (pedal) they gave the job to an apprentice on the night shift, nobody with a CDL to test it, I got to the first light, no brakes, slammed the emergency/handbrake lever & stopped about 20 feet past the rear of the end car, turns out he'd not connected one of the pipes properly, first time under full pressure blew it off.

Get well soon Scott.

I just spoke with Scotts Mom. Seems that he has a broken arm for sure. Not much road rash since he didn't do a lot of sliding. He went about 10 feet in the air(complete with somersault) and landed on his face(with helmet).

He can move all his extremities so I think he will be fine.

I will be more apprehensive from now on.

Holy Mother of Pearl! I think if I saw a semi coming at me I would die of a heart attack loooong before impact! YIKES!

Pammy I was rear ended back in 2000 and I knew the truck was behind me when I stopped at the light I looked back and saw him approaching but then looked forward again. Then WHAM no brakes or anything. And you're right when it happens it happens you don't know when until it does. I hope Scott recovers Mind and body! It was a good thing you all were there.
I teach MC safety and we have so much material to cover in such a short amount of time, I compare it to an Ice berg, we are giving information on the top of the water, underneath its a life time of learning. In 2005 I was courted by the Advanced MC training School Stayin Safe, Larry Grodsky had died the year before, I am a HUGE fan of his. He teaches you a 360 degree awareness, no surprises, and put your bike were they can't touch it. I tell this to my students when I teach them street stratigies.

Get well Scott.

Pammy, I wish Scott a speedy recovery. I have been hit at a stoplight before and like you say, you have no control over it. I hope his bike is ok as well but the main thing is for him to get better. Bikes can be replaced.

I thank you all for your kind words. I will be sure and show this to Scott when he gets home.

His bike had just undergone some freshening up(motor/tranny) and the rest of the bike was in excellent condition, as well. It's a shame to see this happen to such a nice guy and a nice bike.

Pammy,

Sorry to hear. Last weekend must have been fall harvest around here. There were two motorcycle fatalities in 3 separate accidents within a 20 mile radius of my home. One death was a young buck showing off and bit it hard. The other was a couple on a GoldWing who was taken out by an SUV driver backing into traffic. The man is still in critical in Ft Wayne but his wife died on scene. The third and most disturbing was a hit and run involving a 70 year old Harley rider hit by a person who ran a stop sign and then fled the scene. That driver is still at large. The rider is in very critical/guarded condition with swelling on the brain. The local paper sites excellent fall weather and so many motorcycles on the road. It made no mention of cagers not paying attention. Go figure.

Be careful out there folks. You are the only one looking out for you. That is a guarantee.

I am talking to Scott on the phone now. He is awake and in pain. He is scheduled for surgery this afternoon. His left wrist is smashed. Left forarm is broken. Pelvis is broken. They are not sure if they will operate on his hip.
He is in good spirits.

He is at Bayfront Hospital in St Petersburg. He says "I shall ride again!" Ha Ha....Great attitude.

Scott isn't feeling so well now. He was really sick a few moments ago.
I don't know if this is normal.

Very.
Likely either the pain form his injuries or just some post-trauma, which can present in a multitude of different symptoms from person to person.
Relax, He'll be fine. Busted up bones hit everyone differently, I've taken shots to the temple that made me nauseous for over a week.

Get well soon Scott. Hate to see anybody not riding because of a run in with a cage or two. There is a troll with an M2 on the boards, could always steal parts off of hers to get you back on the road.

I feel bad for him. He has some bad luck sometimes.

Front head is broken and the frame looks bent. I will know more when the insurance people come so we can tear into it. I am not sure who all will be at fault on this one.

I am not sure who all will be at fault on this one.

From your description of the accident, the driver of the pick-up will probably be cited and held responsible for all damage and injuries related to this accident.
