I am in for the Montauk run.

I am out there every weekend doing photography work.

Here are some shots from the past weekend.

I've always preferred the North Fork to the South Fork. More interesting roads, far less traffic. It's getting worse, but it's still NOTHING like the summer time traffic jams in the Hamptons.

Best route would be to stick to the North Fork till you get to Greenport, then take the ferry to Shelter Island (Route 114) and the ferry from Shelter Island to North Haven. It's a much nicer ride and gets you past MOST of the Hamptons traffic.

If you follow that route, you'll even get a chance to take a photo similar to this one:

I love the North fork, as well, (esp. the Wineries!)...but the south fork, esp. AFTER Labour Day, is SO beautiful, and has OCEAN beaches.
Manorville Rd. (Cty. Rt 111) is fine with me, staying to the South fork, off of the LIE, no need to traverse up to/from the North Fork.

....there's really something to be said for getting off the scoot, losing the boots, and walking in actual surf.
Looks like Moby's (Speaking of NYC restaurateurs) playing the Surf Club in Montauk, on the 23rd...

Actually, following my route you still get PLENTY of ocean beaches. You're just past the brunt of the Hamptons, that's all. By the way, if you've never ridden through Shelter Island, you owe it to yourself. It's a nice little detour.

I've ridden through SI...

NO Ocean beaches on the North Fork, though...
you still gotta get back to the South Fork for those.
I do love the North fork, though.

Does the ferry still run from Groton(?) to Orient Point?

Used to take that ferry to Binghampton in the old days.

Yes, that ferry is still going. My buddy dropped his Indian Chief on that boat last month. Banged it up real good.

Jaimec- If you're around when we do this Montauk thing, it would be VERY cool if you were to lead a leg through the North Fork, en route to SI & onward to sag harbor....doesn't Gent. John live there?.

Tramp, I wasn't trying to imply there were ocean beaches on the north shore (not that I have anything against the sound beaches), but that once you get back down to the south shore through Shelter Island you're pretty close to the ocean beaches on that road... after bypassing the Hamptons. Sorry I wasn't clearer. While I was typing that, I had the map open in front of me, but naturally you couldn't know that (or see it).

As for your offer... I guess it all depends on when this happens?

Oh, and Bcord... that ferry runs from NEW LONDON to Orient Point.

...the Port Jeff ferry could work well for NEBOs coming down.
This is a great post-Labour Day run, I was yammering about coordinating it a couple years back, let's plan in putting it together this year.
No twisties to speak of, but GREAT food and splendid sights

Not to hijack the thread but...

Randy: Was that you I saw yesterday evening on Peninsula Blvd heading north towards the Southern State Parkway? I was on the southbound side waiting to make the left on to North Village Avenue. I was heading to Abigail's Coffee Shop in Rockville Center for dinner (fine Filipino food on Long Island).

I just looked at your profile photo (Tramp made me curious) and that sure LOOKS like the bike I saw!

No, Not me. I was a train riding commuter yesterday evening with a disappointing Met game being the cap off to a non eventful evening. I have to update the profile picture as my Napoleans were traded for some nice Tuono mirrors. maybe I'll wait for our trip and get the same shot?

Yes Gent Jon lives on the south fork, Sag Harbor to be exact. I'm sure there could be a few of us NEBO boys that would do this ride. It would have to be after the 15th for me though, I'll be in Brazil till then.

Where would this ride be originating from? And would this be a multi-day event? My place to Montauk is between 5 and 7 hours (I live just north of Albany).

The ladies love this photo.

I've been dying to put it on BadWeb.

That's me on the dinosaur at Dinosaur State Park in Utah, just over the border from Dinosaur, Colorado. See a trend?

I was riding a MATCHING green BMW K1200GT (rented) for a long weekend across northern CO.

I wish that ladder could have been taken away...the thing had a real saddle on it.
