Jesus H, don't HD dealerships have a hard enought ime with Buell? No they're adding MV? If I were a Tech, I'd be asking for a raise. Good for HD though, they know they're behind the 8 ball when it comes to developing sports bikes, so they did the next best thing...they bought another line. | ||

Maybe we will just see a V4 V-rod. Hopefully HD will hire MV's mechanics and it will benefit Buell's also. It does sound like HD is really wanting to BE in the sport bike market. Hope thats true. Can you even imagine the varied clientele you would see in these new dealerships? Staggers the imagination. | ||

I hope this means that they are going to officially move Buells out of HD dealerships. I can see stand-alone dealerships selling Buells, MV Agustas and Cagivas. | ||

Apparently the motivation is that this is a cheap way to create a lot of new HD outlets in Europe. I'm sure something will happen over here, but I don't think they are worried too much about that yet. | ||

There must be a reason why MV ran out of money in the first place. " Possibly because A)they have limited exposure to the marketplace which is something Buell is in danger of with continued loss of dealerships and B) they cost an arm and a leg - not exactly mass production which is what a business requires to really bring in the bucks. | ||

As Jim has already noted, this deal is about Euro market-share and dealer network. Europe has been a growth market for Harley, unlike the U.S. For the immediate future, I wouldn't expect much new or changed here vis a vis the dealer network [only a handful of MV dealers in the US] or line representation, viz. Buell. This is all about expanding the 'Motor Company's footprint in Europe. And they've picked it up basically just for the outstanding debt. Clever deal, m'thinks... | ||

I don't know if it's a good or bad thing, but is sure is exciting. If they don't require MV and Cagiva to be tied to HD dealerships, then they can probably find a way to unshackle Buell too. All of the brands but HD could be sold at multi-make dealerships, and interested HD dealerships could could have a better stable of sportbikes. There is also no reason that MV couldn't be brought down-market a little and be turned into direct competition to the Japanese big four. This could be huge for Buell. It could be huge for HD, and it could be huge for the American motorcycle industry as a whole. If those HD workers that are currently laid off could be put to work doing export HDs, sub-components for MV, or final assembly for US bound bikes, then everyone could win. I'm obviously not an expert economist, business leader, or motorcycle manufacturer, but someone who is all of those things decided this was a good idea. I wish them the best of luck. Bill | ||

I think (sarcastically  ) that HD should be a good greedy Capitalist company and gut the Italians.Lay them ALL off and outsource to the USA where we've already got too many out of work. Heck, we've got plenty of capacity at the moment.And then re-badge them as BUELLS!!! Indian did it to Ace HD did it to Aermacci Only trouble is,MV sources too much from their homeland,so we'd end up sourcing wheels/swingarms etc. for them from China and they'll become Buells. I'm so full of it at the moment | ||

You were right about HD (HOG) stock Rick_a. It's at a record low right now. ($33.1 +/-) If you were one of the people who thinks that the MV purchase was a good move, then now might the time to buy. Just be glad you didn't jump on board 18 months ago when it was trading at around $75.00. With the company being traded so low, I wonder how they are set to defend a take-over if anyone was interested. Bill | ||
