The tornado went from west of town across the north part of town, going between both of us. I had to work at the town, Parkersburg, that was clobbered last night. It really makes you realize who is in charge when you see that type of damage. They said of the 7 people who were kiled, most were in their basements. One of our electric servicemen's house was completely blown away. His truck was still parked in the street but beat up pretty good. A Cavalier that was parked in the driveway was just gone, nowhere to be seen. Iowa-Mike | ||

They said on the news that papers from Parkersburg have been found in Prairie DuChein, Wi. That's over 100mi. away. | ||

There was a guy from the midwest that was asking the guy in Florida why he would live where there are hurricanes who asked the guy from California why he would live where there were earthquakes who asked the guy from the midwest why he lived where there were tornadoes. They all said "I wouldn't want to live where those other guys live." | ||

I am from Australia and have always wondered why people would build homes where twisters and tornadoes are common. Thats probably a third of the US. There really isn't much land in the world that isn't subject to some sort of natural disaster. | ||

i grew up running around all over that area. that really sucks. havent been through there for a year or 2 though. i dont think i know to many people that still live there, but im sure plenty of there familys still do. i got lucky when the tornado came through ackley years ago. it wiped out alot of our timber and uprooted a huge tree and set it on top of our house like a teeter totter, but it only broke the peak of a couple rafters so it was not to bad of a fix. | ||

I am from Australia and have always wondered why people would build homes where twisters and tornadoes are common. Pretty much anywhere in the US is prone to some natrual threat, be it tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. These things are not a constant threat, as there are seasons in which they become more of a problem for a short amount of time (with the exception of earthquakes). You just live in the place that you call home, and you enjoy what you have, and hope that these disasters never find you or your loved ones. It isn't a constant worry. Where I live in northern Alabama, we have tornados as well. We are the Tornado alley of the southeast. We get about the same number of tornados as the Midwest does.. not as many really big ones, but it doesn't take an F5 to tear up a town. You just try to be as prepared as possible. 80% of the year is pretty much tornado free.} | ||

Why do we live here? Why not? Around a thousand people per year in America lose their lives due to tornadoes versus more than 40,000 who die in vehicular related accidents. So a much more reasonable question might be "why travel on public roads?" The better question in my view is, why live in a tornado prone area and not have some type of reliable storm shelter. I've been asking myself that very question and am planning to render it moot. | ||

Tornado's can happen anywhere in the US almost, from Downtown Miami to Denver. They are very shortlived, isolated events, almost like lightning strikes. That said, they are the single most concentrated and powerful weather event known to man and if a big one gets a hold of you, you won't soon forget about it... Still, you can easily live in the Midwest your whole life and never even see a tornado. The likely hood of living in California and never seeing a wildfire, or experiencing an earthquake, or living in Florida and never going though a big hurrican is slim-to-none. I grew up in NW Penna. Shortly after I moved to Fla. tornado's ripped through areas near my Penna. home town that had never been struck. Living in Florida I saw many tornado's spawned by hurricanes over many years of living there. Several struck within a few miles of my home. In East Tennessee, a trailer home was ripped from my brothers property, fifty feet from his house. Tornado's are annually common around here too. Seems like there is no "out of bounds" for them, only places they are more likely to happen. | ||

and if the little dutch boy pulls his finger out of the dike. Delaware will disappear. I feel for the tornado tossed peeps. Grew up in a house with a near miss. The last month in Arkansas has been tiring to say the least. I am one of the fortunate ones. Had one spawn cell skip over me and the rest have gone just south or north of me. | ||

I used to think that people that lived in Florida got what they deserved when hurricanes destroyed their homes. That was before I volunteered for a week of relief work in Punta Gorda following the destruction caused by Hurricane Charlie. Some people have roots that run deep for centuries. Your heritage is a hell of thing to walk away from. I grew up a lot during that week even though I was already in my 40's. Learned a lot about the good and decent side of human nature. | ||

Did not mean to hijack guys. Cyclones here in Oz do not cause even a third of the damage those tornadoes etc do. We get some wind and a bit of sideways rain. | ||
