I need to do an oil change on my new (to me) Blast. I just got the bike and don’t know when or if the engine oil has been serviced. She has the right about of oil in her but it looks black and dirty. When I do change the oil I want to pick one brand of oil and stay with it. So my questions to the board are:

What brand of oil do you use and why?

How often do you change your oil?

What other points are there that need regular lube? I’m thinking long the line of chassis points not main wheel bearings. I’d guess wheel bearing get repacked with every tire change.

Welcome to Bad Web and the wonderful world of Buell.

Not surprisingly, the question of proper engine oil, like almost every imaginable subject relating to the Buell, has been covered, (in the case of oil, about a million times:-),
and the results are available in the Knowledge Vault in the lubrication section.

Here is a link to it:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/3590.html?1209701695

There is also a topic devoted entirely to the Blast, called Thumpers.

PS: The best oil is Mobil 1, 15w50

Zane,

It just depends on what type of ride you are planning.

Plan on using her as a daily commuter. 22 miles of mixed driving to work. Half is 35/45 mph in the suburbs and the other half is 55/60 across the causeway.

On the weekends, just plan to use her as fat man transport.

Big consideration is the heat. I live in Central Florida and so heat is an issue.

I was talking about the Mobil-1 vs. Astroglide.

For the ride I took solo right after work, I used Syn3. I am not pleased with the levels of consumption though. I am going back to Amsoil next time.

For the one I took later with my girlfriend, Astroglide would have been a better choice (if it had been needed). I tried to make a switch there at one point too. I got a sample size of the KY Warming Gel. It worked well, but later that night I was out at a hot crowded bar and the heating agent reactivated PAINFULLY!

I ended up having to wash my burning junk in the bathroom sink and throw away the contaminated boxers.

So I guess what I am saying is to find something that works and stick with it.

Two of the most important things to me are my motorcycle and my junk. Why take chances with either?

I'm in the middle of a long, drawn out divorce. Afraid I won't be having that kind of ride for quite a while...(sigh)

Have you seen the other thread about the Asian prostitutes at Walmart?

There are options!

I personally claim to use Cheese Whiz. Comes in a can, has viscosity, it's kinda slippery, and no one argues about the mental stability, or lack of, for running some brand that offends.

One could argue that it is artificial, but not necessarily synthetic....or perhaps it is.....hmmmmm.

I spray down my cylinders through the spark plug hole with Pam and dump in Crisco. Never had a failure yet and its biodegradable.

I'll reiterate:

Extra Virgin olive oil is ok, but the higher flash point of peanut oil makes it better for frying. The advantage to the olive oil is that it is higher in monounsaturated fats, where the peanut oil is higher in polyunsaturated fats - both good fats by the way, but I prefer monounsaturated. Either one is excellent for raising your HDL (High Density Lipoprotein levels), but olive oil has also been shown to correlate with lessening the occurence of certain cancers. The first pressing of olive oil tends to produce the most flavorful oil, with each subsequent pressing producing oil that is lighter in flavor than the previous. Olive oil is also part of a Mediterranean diet, which has long been touted as a healthy lifestyle. I've also use Olive oil to fuel hurricane lamps in a pinch. It's an expensive light source, but sometimes it is the only thing you have. You could also run olive oil in your diesel engine if you had too, but you'd need a fuel pre-heater if you plan on leaving the car or truck outside when the temps run below freezing. I'd avoid canola oil, which is a manufactured oil made from toxic rapeseed oil. There is no such thing as a canola, it's a tradename. What the hell is a canola anyway?

I hope this helps.
