On my way to work at 5:30 I round a corner and there standing in the middle of the road is a deer! This is in the city limits too! Now I know this town isn’t Times Square but I never really thought there’d be deer in the road, not three blocks from my house.

I’m glad I wasn’t hauling butt or it’d been nasty as it was I just went around him...THAT’S right he never did move just stood there!

We do get a couple of riders every year smacking a deer, last year a rider was killed. So if you go out at night in to deer country you need to be careful.

I feel you there. I have a lot of deer around me down in FLA. Not only deer though, boars and run away cows can be a problem as well. About a month ago me and my girl were coming down a long dark stretch of road when we can across glass every where and cars all on the side of the road. They hit a cow. Literally a couple mins sooner and it could have been us.

Long-legged horned rats is all they are.

We have them in the hills and it does make you sit up and take notice at nights.

Here: just to celebrate...

Almost whacked one on the way to work. I thought about passing this Neon and thought better of it. He turned left and I stopped where he was, a few seconds later I pulled up to see a deer standing on three legs in the grass and the neon had a smashed front end. It could have been me...

One problem with moose is that their eyes do not reflect light like a deer's eyes do. They are same color as the trees in the background at night as near as I can tell.

Bears eyes reflect light green at night, deer are kind of reddish.

Our bears are just coming out of hibernation. A big female made the rounds the other night and demolished 10 or 15 bird feeders in our neighborhood. The guy that saw her up close said she was about 6 feet tall standing and probably about 400 pounds.

We bring our bird feeders in a night, I can't stand it when I have to replace or rebuild them all.

Last year I sneaked up on a young male bear (in broad daylight) and popped a 12 ga. blank on his ass from about 30 feet away. He demolished about 10 saplings getting out of the area and we did not see him again.

That bear had been orphaned in his first year out and missed a lot of the second year training cycle for new bears. He was sleeping nights and raiding all the bird feeders in the daylight hours. He was supposed to have not survived the winter without his mother but he defied all odds and showed up young, hungry, and stupid last spring.

Black bears are nice critters, make a little noise and they just quietly ease away from you before you even see them. We have to be careful when we are out picking wild blueberries or we'll step in the bear droppings. Otherwise they are not a problem.

Jack

we get pheasants over here when out in the "sticks" as we brits call countryside. hundreds of them all over the road. they are bred for shooting parties, and people pay good money to run around in muddy, damp woods with a shotgun.

apparently if you kill one by driving over it and stop to pick up, thats poaching. but if you find a dead one in the road its ok to take it.

a few years ago i was driving through scotland on a camping trip and there were hundreds of red deer running across the road at about 4 am. i stopped and waited until a truck went past and followed it. those red deer are about 4 or 5 foot high and could wreck a car no problem.

In S. Dakota, Pheasant are a major road hazard. Evolution ( or poor programming by a Diety that didn't think about roads, and probably works at Microsoft ) has them flush across open space to avoid Coyotes. What this means to you, is they hurl across the road about windshield height, when they are startled by your engine noise.

I don't want to think about hitting a Bear. Or Moose.

I have a buddy who last year bought a house in the middle of the Mendon Ponds Park ( New York )deer herd. Thousands! With massive amounts of posted land surrounding the park, the darling Bambi's ( that make those southern, Texas deer look like rodents ) average over 200 lbs. and have zero fear, making me not paranoid, but rational, as I drive the posted limit past the Park. I've been passed by idjits doing 70+ in a 45 zone ( nice roads, gentle curves & hills ) and seen the carnage every week. Sometimes a fresh kill daily.

To avoid the pain & expense, I actually ride home from my Bud's house down the most infested back roads at a mellow pace & talk to the deer in the road "Move it, Dinner!" to get them out of the way. That's why the Wileyco muffler is going back on this year.

The County spent a fortune sticking "deer reflectors" by the side of the road, down Rt.65. They are supposed to reflect headlights off the road & scare the deer. HA! no effect. They DO make glints that look like eyes, & the "cry wolf" aspect makes them worse than useless, IMHO.

+1 Firebolt32. I can vouch for that.

My truck was in the shop, so I had my moms car. So, naturally something bad happens. I caused about 5k in damage to moms ride. I hit the deer and it spun around so hard it flew in the air, his hooves denting every panel of the car on the passenger side.

It was close to home, so I went and got my neighbor and his trailer and had fried back strap the next night. Mom was pissed, but she understood.

Don't know why I decided to post that story, this thread reminded me I suppose.

Anyhow, I have yet to have a hairy moment with any type of large wildlife while on 2 wheels. (or 1):::knocking on wood:::

I grew up in South Florida before it was paved over. Florida deer are about half the size of deer up north. Not something you want to hit but not the 200 pound monster rats you guys in the north deal with.

What you really don't want to hit is an alligator. They will travel from water to water looking for food. My dad hit one with a car back in the late 60's. It was not pretty. Not only did it piss off the gator but it did a real number on my dad's old Plymouth. Broken shocks, Alignment went south in a big way, cracked the oil pan and took out the exhaust system.

At night alligators have "Satan Eyes". They glow deep red in the headlights. Scary as hell to a 10 year old boy.

Well know the feeling of the deer story. Came up on a dead one that was pushed my way by a truck in front of me. Couldn't avoid it so it took me down. Good thing for good gear. Only a small scratch from asphalt eating through my harley gloves. Got the parts and fixed last night. Just at $109 to fix. Not bad but the gear will cost me three times as much. But saved a lot of skin!!!

Up to Dover, DE for my daughters birthday. Get grandkid fix for me and grandmaw. Finish cake and ice cream, hit the road about 7:30PM. Driving on Rt 8 east, haul'er down flashers on stopped in the road wait for eight deer to cross. Just like a kindergarten crosswalk. OK, get going again. 3 or 4 miles further here we go again. Anti-lock brake music play'in, flashers back on. We've split the herd this time three on the right heading away with four on the left waiting to cross. THEN Mr. Get-the-hell-out'a-my-way swerves around my left going hard. It was at that moment that the gene all deer have kicked in. You know the one; the one that makes them decide to play "Chicken" at the last instant and two started to dart across the road. Within the space of about 0.5 seconds Mr. Get goes from Peddle to the Metal to Butt pucker Panic brake'n swerve. It was almost like a car on a see-saw. First lights up tail squat to tail lights two feet higher than normal. How he didn't hit those two deer I'll never know. Those were big deer. I'd estimate $4000.00 a piece cause I hit two smaller ones and it was about $6000.00 total. Before you think that I just rounded a blind curve and stopped dead in the road, Rt 8 is flat and wide open for miles with four and five hundred acre fields on both sides of the road with no trees for them to hide behind. I don't know about you but if I see a car stopped in the road with flashers on and brake lights pulsing it gets my attention.

All of God's creatures have their place...right next to the potatoes and gravy. Saw that on a shirt once and agree 100%.
Fortunately I've never hit anything but a opposum here in Ky. where livestock has been known to get loose and cause accidents. Came around a corner once and encountered a deer with the wife on the back on my Shadow but got slowed down in time to avoid an accident. There are several deer carcases on the side of interstate on any given day and from my last trip it looks as though the red tailed hawks have been playing chicken and losing. Hitting anything at speed would not be a pleasant experience.

Oh yeah, I did hit that turtle once while following a car. The car strattled it and luckily I hit it straight on. It was only a box turtle so it was like hitting a speed bump at about 45mph.

Had one almost knock me off my bike at 60mph. There's nothing you can do, they fly so low across the roads. I'm always checking both sides of the roads for any signs of wildlife. Hit a woodchuck last year and got into a tank slapper.
