You might want to start your route planning with Google maps.

http://maps.google.com/

You can move way points by just dragging them, and the program automatically updates the route. Relatively new feature.

Then when you have your route fixed, you can input the final way points into your Garmin.

Might be easier.

How is that done?

Damn, I just new someone was going to ask that!!

OK, let's say you are traveling from Sag Harbor, NY to Deals gap.

You go to Google map, click on the "Get Directions" tab, and enter Sag Harbor, NY, and Deals Gap, NC.

You discover that the distance is about 866 miles, and almost 15 hours. Long drive. You know that there is an excellent Buell Dealer in Roanoke, so you think about stopping there.

So you click on the Deals Gap marker in Google map, and drag it back to Roanoke, Va. Now the trip is 571 miles and just under ten hours. That sounds more like it.

Now you click on the Find Business tab, and look for motels in Roanoke. Let's say you decide on the Days Inn. You click on "more info", check rates, and decide to stay there. You can click on their site to make a reservation.

Now you go to your Garmin, I have a Nuvi 660, not a Zumo, but I assume they are pretty similar.

You can either enter the address of the Days Inn in Roanoke, by its address shown in Google maps, or you can use the Shopping function in the Garmin to locate it.

In any event, you save the motel as a destination.

You can save quite a few destinations this way, and then pick the relevant one each day. On the Nuvi, they are saved in recent destinations, and they can be saved as favorites.

Some Garmins have the ability to make routes with several way points, others do not.

I always print out the days route in Google map as a back up.

Got it?

It'll work, thank you for the explanation. I was beginning to worry, Garmin isn't Mac friendly (if I remember correctly) I thought I was going to miss something.

"TYRE" is a program to create routes using Google Maps & Earth for the TomTom Rider GPS

http://www.janboersma.nl/gett/index.php

I believe it can be used with "some" other GPS`s or the files can be converted ?

Works very well & is very easy to use

Does the zumo work with the Garmin city select software? I have it for my gpsmap60c, it allows you to create routes on your own, or it can choose them for you.

Alternatively buy a road atlas, a piece of paper, & a pencil.

As a professional driver I really ought to get a gps thingy, but I haven't yet found one that does everything that I want, it needs to have weight limits & bridge heights etc etc.

The new Navteq system will cover UK & France initially, I'm told, so I'll wait & see.

Meantime, Michelin road atlas, in the cab, & Route66 on the 'puter for general route planning.

The other thing is that it's not a proper road trip unless you get lost somewhere & discover this amazing little restaurant or museum that you can never find again when you want to show somebody else.

The Zumo comes with City Navigater - it essentially works exactly like Google maps does now in that you drag the route around and make waypoints.
