When I was visiting Florida last week, old people were EVERYWHERE!

They were manning the tollbooths, they were working at Walmart, they were running the Crystal River State Park, selling tickets, driving the wagon and greeting in the lobby. One old guy was wearing a wet suit and got in the water to feed the manatees.

Remember: Middle age is 35

we have the donut club/rubber knife gang here. they are here every saturday. never buy anything. they must all call each other in the morning to see what to drive. one day its the vettes, then the mustangs, trucks, you get the idea. it never is the bikes though.

come in and drink free coffee and eat free popcorn for 3 or 4 hours. after they have covered the entire place with spilt popcorn and coffee they leave.

i cant wait to do that when i retire.(insert sarcasm here)

When I was working as a mechanic in the early-80's (another lifetime ago) there was an old guy that was always hanging around the garage, drinking coffee and chatting up all the customers. It took a while for me to get friendly with him, but he turned out to be real gem of human being. His name was Walt Garbinski and he was retired from the space program. He was involved in man rating launch vehicles for the moon shots in the Apollo program. He also served with the USAAF in England as a radio man and gunner on a B-17 during WWII. He completed his number of missions without a scratch, but was eventually injured in France... the kind of injury you don't get a Purple Heart for (not the heart, at least).

Almost every story he told me was full of humor and life lessons. I really liked old Walt. Oh, he could be cranky sometimes, but he was a real charmer when he wanted to be. He'd come by in his Alfa-Romeo Duetto and spend a few hours with us every day. I spent quite a few lunches with Walt and got to meet his daughter and son-in-law. His wife had passed away years before I met him, but he never let on how much he must have missed her. I don't think I ever saw her picture in his house.

I eventually had to move on to another career as the opportunity came. I was heartsick when I came by the garage 6 months later and found out that old Walt had passed on. They told me he still came by the garage in his Alfa every day until he was too sick to drive.

That was one old codger that I'll never forget. I hope I can be that cool when I get up to Walt's age.

I doubt I will be, though.
