Advance maybe.... but REBATE!

Give me a break! The only thing a lot of people will get to do with it is put it in the bank and send it back next April 15th.

Every year I lose more and more faith in our government.

They give us our OWN money back so that they can tax us on it AGAIN next year. Yay?

...there has GOT to be a law somewhere in the thousands of pages of tax code against double-taxation.

Wasn't double taxation in the Constitution?

Anyway... I'll be using mine to take care of some credit cards

I read that it will not be taxed and won't be claimed as income for '08. We'll see though.

Wisconsin supports double taxation. I'm supposed to claim big items I sell as income, ya know, the same things I paid tax for when I bought new. WTF?
Oh, I'm doing the American thing with my "rebate", I'm buying a gun. Beretta Px4 Storm.

From what I understand its just a advance on your 2008 tax return.
So, lets say your single and get the $600 rebate this spring.
Next year, your tax return is $500 bucks.
You now owe the IRS $100 bucks.

They are hoping "WE" piss the money away and "stimulate" the economy.

Short term fix for a long term problem....

just like wolf said,

they won't tax you on this money. they will just subtract it from next years refund.

so my suggestion to everyone is to go claim zero on your paycheck now, especially if your single. so it won't hurt so bad next year. pres bush and congress did this back in 2002, but it wasn't this much money.

i'm going to put most of it in my daughters school fund.

They could fix it all by making the oil companies roll gasoline and diesel fuel costs back to $2.00 a gallon. That would make the economy take off.

I was watching the local news (Columbus Ohio) and some our elected jerks would like to see the gasoline tax raised
so we can get I-70 (among other roads in ohio) fixed....

I can't afford anymore gas taxes... Tax beer, smokes, porn, whatever. Anymore tax on gas is milking a dry tit. I'll have to move someplace warmer to ride the bike 100% of the time

its closer to a buck here

Excelent Idea please clarify, the form as it relates us singles

1 for single,
1 for head of house,
1 for claiming self

would allow you to "take up to 3" correct so
I want to take less so that more is withheld ?

"Wisconsin supports double taxation. I'm supposed to claim big items I sell as income, ya know, the same things I paid tax for when I bought new. WTF?"

Are you sure about that? I have lived here all my life and the only tax you would pay on resold items is capital gains, and then only on large items.

There is tax on the smaller exchanges, but just the buyers sales tax.

If you're right and I'm wrong, I have been dodging taxes for years.

Bill

Man, if I claimed 3 I'd owe huge every year.

I'm single male in his 20's making a good living and doesn't own a home. As such, Uncle Sam sees it fit to f**k me in the ass on a yearly basis.

And gas taxes? I LOVE going out of town for work - the taxes in NY are just crazy. Gas drops by 30 cents when you cross into PA, VT or NJ. Hell, in NJ they'll even pump it for you!

LOL on gas tax...

Guys, if the Goverment eliminated the subsidies to the Oil industry, gas would be about $6 a gal.

The ALREADY use our tax dollars to hold the price down!

Bill, I could be wrong, but that is how I understood it. I used TurboTax, and one of the entries for income was for larger items I sold.

Ain't that the truth. If I didn't claim "0" I'd be lucky not to owe.

I may want to retract this later but does anyone watch Glen Beck? I don't agree with everything he says but night before last he brought up a good point about this "economy stimulus" only stimulating China's economy. Which if you think about it makes sense. He aired a blurb from some important sounding guy, can't right off remember his name but in a nutshell he said he would hope people would spend their money on domestic products. WHAT THE...? What do we make anymore? Unless you have the cash to buy an American car (or motorcycle) just about everything else is made in China or Tiawan. If we get as much as they say we are my family should score about $2100 which will go straight to my American bank and pay down on my American house. I didn't put this economy in the dumpster why should I have to bail it out?

Didn't they try this a few years ago and it didn't work?

In my opinion (that could be totally off base), this is a political move. The republicans announce that they are introducing a bill that gives us 'free' money, and the democrats can't squash it because they would look like a bunch of asshats. It doesn't matter what the truth is. Politics is perception. I live in DC. This place is nuts.

Last year I tried a little experiment with regard to my tax withholding. I'll be 27 in a couple months, am single, own my home, and make a good middle class income.

I've always claimed single/0 exemptions despite being eligible for more, and I've always gotten a tax return (nothing too big, but usually $1K-$2K).

I changed it to single/1 for the 2006 tax year and they just about nailed it. I got ~$300 back federal and owed ~$160 on state. I'm scared to think what it would have looked like if I'd actually claimed the other exemptions I'm eligible for.

Even though it's hard to get excited about tax returns, since it was your own damned money to begin with, I have to admit I kind of like the lump-sum 'windfall' as you get used to living with whatever your net income is over the course of a year.

I changed back to single/0 and my two returns total well over $4K this year. I wiped out my 'I was young and stupid' credit debt and now hope to add once more to my motorcycle stable. ; )}

no it wouldn't. that would create shortages that would make the 70's problems a joke.

I'm going to buy an AR15 with my "rebate". Seems to be a good investment with the way things are going. Or just stuff it in with my savings. I dunno which is a better way to thumb my nose at them.

Better you owe the government at the end of the year than wait for a tax return. You could be getting interest on the money you owe them, if your disciplined enough to save it. Just don't owe too much or you are going to pay a penalty. I don't understand why people would claim zero and let the government hold their money.

Wouldn't it be cool if everybody turned around and gave the "return", which the two major parties are so "graciously bestowing" upon us, to the Libertarian Party? Maybe THAT would send 'em a message!

the key as far as tax returns should be to get zero dollars back and have to pay in zero at the end of the year..... think about this... somebody said they were getting 4k plus back.... take that 4k and divide it by 12 months and get 333 dollars per month......... now take that money and invest it into a modest ira, cd or even a savings acct and look where you could be...all a tax return is a interest free loan........ how many of you are getting interest free loans?

I have heard people tell me this before, but with interest rates as low as they are, you are not going to make enough to mention.
I use my tax return to pay my property tax, that way I don't have to think about setting aside money for it.

I have been calling this "rebate" nothing but a "Payday loan"

We might as well head off to our local check cashing store to get a loan.

This money is not coming from thin air... Wait maybe it is... If they just print a few more bills then our currency will REALLY be worth something then.

Gee I guess that trip to the UK is off, I would of had to use an entire paycheck to get a McDonald's Big Mac.
