But in the past 3 months my bike has idled its self over 5 times and I've been through 3 shifter peg levers, 3 turn signals, 2 bar ends and 2 mirrors...

All because my driveway is on an incline, and theres a gate at the top. So I get off, go up the hill, open the gate, down the hill, on the bike ride up the hill, park the bike get off the bike walk back to the gate fending off the dogs while i disrobe my gear to better work the latch on the gate.

But sometimes I dont turn the bike off when I dismount. Everytime that bike idles and I'm not on it... BANG!
And then lift the bike back up and cuss as I have to change even more parts!
F this bike in the A
Nobody should have to repair these parts this many times within a single year.
I'm close to just doing one bar end mirror on the right side and shaving the turn signals.

i've never had a problem. aren't you basically asking for trouble if you park any bike facing down hill?

i leave mine idling everywhere and have never had it fall over, but if it did and did it alot i would probably quit leaving it idling by itself... especially on a hill

Go buy a cheap wheel chock at Harbor Freight for a couple bucks or turn off the bike. I have had that happen once and busted the foot peg and bent the shifter. what a horrible sound, followed by a horrible silence.

I had my Ulysses walk away once while i went to put gear on, but it never found over. Perhaps a midget is hiding in the bushes and is out to get you.

How did you manage to find a hill in Florida? Sorry about the bike, maybe that block of wood is a good idea if those dogs wont take it on you. If they do, maybe you could nail it to the ground or something. (the wood, that is. not the dog, or the bike)

Sorry for your problems, why not buy an automatic gate opener?

Then you just have to push the button on your remote and you won't have to get off your bike till you park it.

Good luck, I hope it doesn't happen any more!

I'll take a better picture when I get off work tomorrow. But I live on a dirt road and have one of the only 3 houses with a paved driveway.
My bike is in the road with ample room to pick up speed to clear the altitude change. And as it sits and waits for me to walk up th incline to open the gate it falls over.
Maybe I'm just nervous that I'll burn the starter up having to keep turning it off and starting it up for such menial crap.

I wonder how many times my starter has been kicked over in the 60K+ miles.
Don't worry about the starter, your parts replacement cost probably will meet the cost of a starter times two if you keep this up.

Make a gadget to keep your brake applied while you are off "wondering around". Also make sure your bars are turned full right.

My driveway is pretty steep, but I just push the button and my garage opens like magic.

Maybe there's a motorized gate in your future?

Interesting pea shooter leaned up against the mail box there.

Ride up to the gate, open gate, ride thru gate, shut gate. Two starts per driveway access. Even if you have to replace the starter every year it will probably be cheaper than having to replace parts.

Now, about that pea shooter there.....
... and the dogs....
nice neighborhood?
I don't think I'd leave the keys in the ignition, just shut it off, do the gate dance, and carry on.

If you must leave the bike running at least lock the front brake.
Aerostich sells a "parking brake" http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Grip-Lock-p-17 319.html

Or you could just get a cheap bungee cord to wrap around the brake lever.

Shoot the dogs????? I never said that. Besides it sounded like the dogs pretty much stayed inside the grounds/compound when the gate was open.
Still curious about the pea shooter, looks sorta interesting.

Here's a different kind of pea shooter:

I have a similar driveway/gate set up. These things are inanimate objects. It means you have time to study the situation and the situation doesn't change while being studied.

I fire up my bike and let it fully warm up while I'm suiting up. I ride the bike up my drive through the gate shut off the engine in gear, and dismount to close the gate.

My gate is open when I am home, but if I had to open it to get out I would shut off the engine, leave it in gear, open the gate, fire it up to ride through, shut it off in gear, close the gate, get on and ride.

Warming up the engine before you get to the gate will negate any starting damage of which you are concerned.

If the dirt road has an unstable surface for your kick stand, pick a spot that will work for the bike, dig out for,and set a patio block flush with the berm or road surface where the side stand will set with the bike level. Maybe one for each tire also.
