I'm a bourbon fan, and prefer Bulleit, Woodford Reserve and Maker's Mark. I've also discovered a pretty smooth, small batch Virginia whiskey, Kopper Kettle, that's really good. They also make legal moonshine that's decent.

I also like Bushmills, Jameson, Gentleman Jack and Jack Daniels and, of course, straight and sipped as G-d intended.

The primary difference between bourbon and other whiskeys is that bourbon seems to have a different impact on me. It makes me, uh, amorous.

I have a huge and I mean huge amount of Whiskey drinkers at my Bar. I was introduced to The Knot by one of my Reps. That was a year ago. At that time it was only going to bar,Pubs,Taverns. Not on the shelves for the public to purchase. It was also only in 3 states. Now its everywhere. But let me tell ya... every serious Whiskey drinker in my place just loves this stuff. Its potent..yes but smooooooth as butter.

For poison, I'll take scotch. Lagavulin from Islay. Yummy - dark and smooth.

For medicine I have a huge appreciation for red wines. I can appreciate all fine examples of all varietals but am most fond of Bordeaux blends and styles (meritage). Really like Rhone blends as well and australian Shiraz.

Ancient Age

That was my Granddaddy's favorite. We still have his last bottle. He passed away in 1993 and it's been aging ever since. Every once in a while, Carlos will pull it out and have a drink. He says it's smoother each time.

It makes me laugh, as my Granddaddy would not send me to the liquor store to buy it for him. He'd always send Carlos for a new bottle.

Ezra Brooks in the green bottle is one of the best you will ever taste for the money.

Plus, it has a cork instead of a screw cap, so you can easily open it with one hand!

You never know when that will come in handy. Holding an intruder at gunpoint comes to mind. I guess it would also work well in a hostage situation, or if you were wounded in the arm. It also might be handy if you were carrying a baby or talking on the phone.

The more I think about it, I should go and buy a bottle and keep it in my desk "just in case."

4cammer,
I thought Bourbon was a clear request. Sorry you got a bunch of Scotch, Irish, Vodka and other refrences... While I enjoy these, Bourbon is my poison.

I consider myself a conesour, my comments;

Personal Favorite. Blantons. By far. Single barrel, hint of green apple. Good Price point for an excelent wiskey.

Woodford Reserve is the best "deal" on the market. Think of it as 75% the Blantons quality at 50% of the price.

Jim Beam has three good Burbons. Bookers, Bakers, and Basil Haydens. Basil Hayden and Bakers are a tie for me, depending on my mood. (I have a bottle of each on the shelf now)

Pappy Van Winkle also has a strong following, I won't say don't try it, I just prefer Blantons. (Now the Van Winkle Rye.. But this is about Bourbon)

Addendum:
I prefer neat as well, but try a drop or two of bitters sometime. Liven's things up a lot and can bring out some very interisting flavors. Standard Angostura works fine.

And dont knock a Mint Julip. Simple syrup and Bourbon on crushed ice with a lot of mint. There is a correct way to prepare and serve, done right, it's a perfect coctail on a hot day.

I take that as a compliment. A drink is in order should you ever find yourself in Portland.

We can discuss other things (Scotch, Canadian, Vodka and the perfect Manhattan, in addition of course to Buell's) over our glasses of Blanton's. I'll try the Trace'

Jack Daniels in the decanter.

Makers Mark in the bottle.

Knob Creek got emptied a while ago. At £45 a bottle, it's not cheap over here.

Aberlour nearly empty. A nice pleasant easy going Scotch.

Isle of Jura is lovely. Need to get a bottle in. Check out their website and watch the vid's.

Laphroaig might appeal to the bourbon drinkers as it has a very distinctive, and strong, peaty taste. Be warned though. The uninitiated have a habit of likening it to medicine, lol.

But it has to be said, a Bloody Mary resplendent with celery, Tabasco and crushed chilli's, as served at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station, is pretty much unbeatable.

"...Bourbon is my poison."

I used to be a bourbon man, but as I got older, most bourbons became too sweet for my palate. I've heard other drinkers mention the same thing.

Still, though... sometimes when I need a bracer... I'll take a hit off a bottle of Beam, but I cannot fathom ever buying Makers Mark by the half gallon anymore... it's just too damn sweet.

Musical reference- Robinella & CC String Band- "White Lightnin'"

Nuttin like a sip from a mason jar...

Good Buell reference, too.

+1! Maker's Mark/Rocks

+1 Knob Creek

My old boss at the liquor store I managed liked Rare Breed, but I never tried it.

Nothin like the kickin chikiiin, though.

Anyone remember the KY river that caught fire a few years back? Yikes.

Ooh don't let them Kentucky boys hear you call Jack Daniels "Bourbon" !

They claim it isn't, and even JD doesn't claim to be.

I find Jack Daniels to be the only American style whiskey I can stand, have never found a real Bourbon I can stand.

Guess I'm what they call a Scotch man, and even that I really only like the Islay style, which is hard find in a local bar. All that Highland stuff I can drink it, unlike Bourbon, but wouldn't choose it.
Give me the peat! Maybe that's why I always bog the engine...

"..Jack Daniels is not technically bourbon..."

Why is that?

Because bourbon comes from Kentucky, and Jack Daniels comes from Tennessee.

Kind of like how Champagne only comes from the Champagne region of France, bourbon only comes from Kentucky.

It's the law.

Pwnzor, I believe the charcoal filtering is what disqualifies JD as a Bourbon. Prior to filtering it is essentially a Bourbon.

The closest analog is the branded
Liquor "Cat Daddy" also made in state

Pwnzor, I believe the charcoal filtering is what disqualifies JD as a Bourbon. Prior to filtering it is essentially a Bourbon.

Federal law is as follows:
On May 4, 1964, the U.S. Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a “distinctive product of the United States," creating the Federal Standards of Identity for Bourbon. Legislation now stipulates that Bourbon must meet these requirements:

* Bourbon must be made in the United States.
* Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn[1]
* Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof.
* Bourbon must be 100% natural (nothing other than water added to the mixture)
* Bourbon must be aged in new, American, charred oak barrels.[1]
* Bourbon which meets the above requirements and has been aged for a minimum of two years, may be called Straight Bourbon[2].
* Bourbon aged for a period less than four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.

HOWEVER...

Upon the entrance of Kentucky into the union, Bourbon county was divided into smaller sub-regions, but economically speaking, products shipped from the area were still designated as coming from "Old Bourbon". Thus, whiskey shipped from the principal port of Limestone (now Maysville, KY) was designated "old bourbon whiskey" to refer to the origin of the product. After about 1840, the name was shortened to just bourbon [2]. Today, various styles, approaches, and theories govern the remaining distilleries which dot the Kentucky countryside. Various ratios of ingredients, subtleties in the distillation process, and the amount of aging yield different flavors of bourbons. In short, this process was one of experimentation, refinement and perfection in a brief, but rich history.

Being a lover of the water of life has brought me into contact with various colorful characters over the years, sitting on many a front stoop while sipping the fruits of backyard stills and pondering the nature of things in general. In the interest of brevity, I will suffice it to say that arguing about where Bourbon comes from is futile at best.

I love whiskey, the water of life, and all its variants. When every geezer with a beard longer than mine insists that Bourbon comes from Kentucky, I'm not one to cause a conflict.
