That is one of the most graphic worst things I have ever seen on the net (and I have seen some horrible stuff and horrible accidents). I would recommend no one click that link unless you want to be really disturbed by the aftermath. Just reminds you how fragile we are on a bike. I am glad to see I am not totally desensitized and that something like this still has an effect on me.

Moped was on the far right side moving waaay too slow. truck was coming down waaay too fast. you can see the truck moving to the left to avoid the moped. But the moped crossed into the far left to take the turn (still moving way to slow).

I don't know what was worse. The initial hit, or the aftermath of getting dragged along.

I'm just glad that was a low resolution camera/video.

the icon milspec vests work pretty darn good, I have yet to have someone pull a left in front of me. I've been wearing it since Sept.

RIP, dude.

This is why I prefer all the backroads and mountains I've got in my area. I generally avoid riding into the city unless necessary, and the city aint that big.

Drivers around here do suck- I cuss every time I see someone on their cell. Nearly went homicidal recently when I saw some meathead in the fast lane, driving slow enough to TEXT MESSAGE someone else whilst driving.

Watch out, folks.

From the lofty vantage point of my truck's cab, I see people acting the fool all day long.

Some guy yesterday was straddling the line between the #1 and #2 lanes, text messaging on his sidekick with both hands, head down, driving with his knee... going about 40mph when everyone else around him was doing 75+.

So I gave him a quick toot from the dual 20" air horns, woke him up right quick.

I'm confused by this video, though... It appears to me as if that trucker ran the scooter down on purpose.

AND THEN NO CARS STOP TO HELP... not that they could do anything, but they barely even slowed down. I'm assuming that was China?

Yeah, that's pretty disturbing. But it did come with a warning so I gots no one but myself to blame for watching it.

Momma always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun, but momma, that's where the fun is!

Sad thing is, it didn't disturb me as much as I'd expected. Guess all those years covering traffic reports in Minneapolis and Denver and seeing it happen live in front of me ... it's different on video than in person.

Oh, and the high-visibility yellow/reflector vest that a friend at Waste Management Inc. gave me is a great safety tool. Looks stupid, but it works.

Truck visibility is generally limited somewhat to the right side from somewhere 20-30 feet in front of the cab to somewhere aft of the right cab door; once you get far enough back, the right side door mirror gives the truck driver visibility of vehicles on his right side. You sometimes see an extra convex mirror mounted on the right to help reveal vehicles or pedestrians in blind spots, but you can't always count on the truck driver checking it in heavy traffic. I've investigated a half dozen truck versus pedestrian or truck versus motorcycle accidents that involved truck blind spots in the city; more than half of them were fatalities.

In this case, it looks as if the scooter started to move left when it was very close to the truck, which may have made the manuveur left nearly invisible to the truck driver, particularly if he wasn't looking right at the scooter continually, which was his responsibility if he was preparing to pass it. The scooter rider might still be alive if he had established a position in the left side of his lane much earlier, even if he was on a slow scooter. This is standard advice for bicycle riders preparing to make a left turn; you have a right to use the road, so establish a safe, visible position even if it compels vehicles to slow down or stop for you or change lanes to get around you.

To sum up: Trucks can have real visibility issues, so it's best to assume they don't see you, and ride defensively.

After this thread and another as well as very inky riding conditions (I'm a daily commuter), I broke down and bought a Hi-Viz Yellow Olympia Motorsports Vest for $70 at my local BMW dealership. Now I don't have much money for the rest of the month, BUT I feel better about my visibility. Now at least, I have another safety gear choice when I go out for a ride. I actually think it looks great! I rode past several storefronts to see my reflection in the tinted windows.

Reality Check!

Like...what if his brakes in the truck just didnt grab? I'm pretty sure they do have top notch power and the brakes do perform well on big deisel like that but what if he just had a malfunction?

What if your bike starts to cut-out as you lean out into the fast lane expecting to be propelled forward only to be left like a sitting duck?

Very graphic video, I've seen some nasty s#!t, but never that nasty.

I wonder if the new motorbike airbag would of helped?

That's a nasty sight...proof that sometimes riding faster than other traffic is safer. I never want to be the slowest thing on the road!

I don't think I want the link to the beheading. It would be hard not to click on it. I'm sure I would regret watching from the sounds of it.

You are wrong and I have seen that, that is number 1 in my list of worst things I have ever downloaded. I am still haunted by the noises.

Even after responding to horrible traffic accidents for several years, I am still in shock of seeing this one.

And the initial hit wasn't horrible, it was the dragging and exploding , uhhh.
