I think it is? All that Buell changed was the pitch on the belt teeth and sprockets.

Why do I get the feeling that this will become another stumbling block for the less-enthused , less-informed Buell dealers.
Customer: I need a belt.
Dealer: Here.
Customer: Try again.

No gearing change. Straight swap.

Just for the record. Your drive belt is covered under warranty if all the stock belt guards are in place.

I can understand the frustration about belt issues on the tube framed bikes. I always struggled to find a good tension setting that allowed me to ride solo with the shock cranked up and let me carry a passenger with luggage. It was always either too loose or too tight. Changing the belt on my Cyclone was the single biggest PITA job I've ever done. Of course, changing a chain and sprockets sucks too.

On the other hand, XB belts have consistent tension, sufficient guards against debris, are easy to change, and require zero adjustment/lubrication/cleaning/"dressing." What's not to like?

I can't help but think of my brother-in-law's brand-new $17k Ducati 999. It's a beautiful bike but after only 200 miles the left side of the wheel/tire/swingarm/etc. is covered in chain lube. Gross.

>>>I think it is? All that Buell changed was the pitch on the belt teeth and sprockets.<<<

But the Speedo should be off about 10-12 percent if my guess about the changed ratios is correct

From my understanding, there will not be a gearing change. As long as you buy the pulleys for the '04 XB9 models.

This way you get the new belt setup, straight swap.

Bykergeek,

Speedo will not be off.

Final Drive 2003 XB9: 65/27

Final Drive 2004 XB9, XB12: 65/27

The only thing Buell changed was the pitch of the belt and sprocket teeth. The change in pitch should not effect the speedo it just ups the performance of the belt.

Duhh. Now that I think about it, you're right. The difference in red line offsets the different primary drive ratio.

Can any of you dealer types out there put a price (parts only) to this potential belt swap? Having a beefier belt that will last 10,000 miles longer than the original is sparking my interest.

The rear pulley has 6 holes instead of 5. There will be something to be done about that.
