Whether we like it or not Kalifornia sets the clean air standards for the rest of us. Gee, do you think that is why harley/Buell stopped selling the after market pipes. I wonder how many 1125's would have to be sold to pay a $1 million dollar fine. Off topic but did anyone see the Docudrama "Who killed the Electric Car?". CARB had a huge role in it. The head of the board at the time was a researcher for hydrogen. If we all bought electric cars then what would shell, Exxon and BP sell us. Shell bought and killed improved battery technology. Remember the Planet is on loan to us from our children. | ||

When the state EPA guys got tired of banging their heads against the Federal wall about car mileage, they went after an easy target. The difference in pollution is B.S., but it's an easy victory for the bureaucrats, who can claim they're 'doing something'. These California legislators gave themselves permission to drive in carpool lanes with one occupant, as long as it has the special little sticker. Oops they don't give them out any more, the entire legislature already got theirs. No more for you! | ||

hey.....i just moved to san francisco last week. so far, i think its wonderful. i can't believe there are bike and scooters parked everywhere in january! fabulous dining, culture, neighborhoods, scenery -- and great motorcycle roads and rocking 4WD territory - i might be in heaven, if i can figure out a way to afford both a house and my hobbies here! (my 11th city, so i have some expertise in this whole moving around thing  ) D | ||

Dang,guys,this is OLD news. They settled this about a week to 10 days after the initial firestorm. This is what prompted Terry and I to open the shop. Vallejo was a Dynojet tuning center and was named in the lawsuit. They shutdown the dynoroom and all the Powercommanders went back to DJ.Terry got laid off as a result. And then Dynojet came out with a compliant PC and CARB and Dynojet were best buddies. Bikes are just going through what cars did back when smog controls first hit. | ||

My first hassle from California and the emissions standards came back in 1988: My 71 javelin was due for registration so I went to a local smog inspection station to get it done. It was easy at the time, my car had it's air pump and pcv intact and didn't burn oil so it was going to pass right? wrong. The guy at the station popped the hood and slammed it back down again less than a second later and informed me that it failed. The reason? chrome valve covers. I'm not kidding. He checked a box marked "non stock appearance" and handed me a sheet of paper that detailed my "right" to an appeal through the Air Rescouces Board. I ended up going to another shop for a 'RE-TEST" and without changing anything it passed with flying colors. I lived in California from 1987-2003 except for a trip to pennsylvania in 94-95 and I never had a positive encounter with the DMV, the Smog shops/CARB, or the state government in all that time. The bureaucrats running the system seem to take pleasure in nothing except playing with people's lives because they had/have the power to make you dance on a string like a marionette. There was no such thing as a quick trip to the DMV or the smog shop. Either one would cost you a half a days wages (mostly spent waiting in line) plus whatever fees they would extort. Want to complain? Better plan on another day off of work while wait in line... only to be told that complaints would only be accepted at that office, that you needed to talk to Sacramento. Of course my worst experiences happened pre-internet where you had no option but to go to the office and wait in line(s), but it hasn't really gotten better since their reach has been steadily growing to encompass more and more vehicles and the standards constantly remain in flux. I'm so glad I live in Missouri now where the vehicle inspections (outside of St. Louis) are just a visual check, and a trip to the DMV takes an hour...at the MOST. | ||

I didn't like smog checks when I lived in northern Ohio as my cars were always 'tampered' with. I learned some carb tuning tricks to get past it. I do realize it was for the greater good, but it always irritated me when they gave out 'passes'. If you spent 'X' amount, like $350 in repairs, you exempt until your next required testing just like you had passed. Here in central Ohio, there's no smog check so I don't really ever visit anyplace that takes too long. I renew my tags online. | ||

Well, in California it sure helps to know somebody in the smog business. Let's just say I'm not worried about any smog-related issues, because I know a guy who knows a guy... or something like that. | ||

One of the scams in Texas that I've seen and been subject to is the "your vehicle can't pass inspection on account of your tires are dry rotted." They point to tiny hairline crazing at the edge of the tread and claim it's dry rot or cracking in an attempt to con the meek and/or ignorant into purchasing new tires. The part of the Texas law that they claim to be enforcing is the stipulation that there must be no cracks in the sidewalls of tires. Auto repair/service shops include some of the sleeziest jerks around. But Texas ROCKS!  | ||

Another Kalifornia load of crap is the "random" test only center smog checks. I had a Jeep CJ7 that once I was randomized, I got the test only every time until I sold it. I was told it doesn't work that way by DMV and the smog shop. righhhht | ||

When, you go to the testing station anywhere here in Europe, they rev the nuts off your car, between 3 & 6 times, to check emissions (lots of diesels here) & if your motor lets go? well that's just too bad, it was obviously faulty before testing. So I always adjust the throttle stop to prevent them running it flat out before I take it in. Then just put it back after. | ||

California is run by politicians and the two to four largest population centers there. For the 13 or 14 years that I lived there it seemed like every year there were attempts to divide the state into several new states, and the division lines always separated the large population areas from the more rural areas. | ||

Wow,you guys are harsh. Every state has it's issues,you just work around them. I go to AAA for any DMZ stuff I cannot do on line. Find a Smog shop with a REAL mechanic and issues go away--we have no annual inspections like some of you do,and unlike Arizona, have no smog checks on bikes. This whole "winterize" thing,never happens with me,ride to work year around. Have Tahoe,Yosemite,Highway 1,Napa Valley,Laguna Seca, etc,etc,etc, within a short ride away.Want beach,check,want mountains,check,want to ride in the desert,check.Never leave the state. | ||

C'mon guys. California is simply looking out for all our best interests. Big Brother only wants what is best for his children. We are ill equipped and unable to make correct decisions and fend for ourselves we NEED these wise and righteous legislators and caretakers to provide the path of redemption and salvation from ourselves. Californians get what they deserve. My only hope is that there is a right proper big one that provides some nice beach front property in Nevada. I just hope the good ones leave before it all goes bad. | ||

i definitely sit on the fence on this issue - on one hand, i've had both borla and flowmaster exhausts on my jeeps i've also had the buell race kits, and now a very very very beautiful to look at, listen to and ride micron exhaust however, i just came back from a year in china. where this is what the air looked like. i do *not* want to live in a place like this -- and hope that legislation like CA can prevent things like this scene i lived in at my place in Beijing -- http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=64939&l=b8b4 f&id=847255523 D |
