Around here there is very little motorcycle parking areas which is strange considering how common motorcycles are. Anyways, I've had my bike for two weeks and pretty much have just been parking in car parking spots. However, doing this really scares me because I'm afraid that a car might not see the bike and try to park in the spot and hit my bike, then take off of course.

Over the years I have seen many bikers park their bikes on the sidewalk in front of a store or maybe off to the side a little bit, out of the road and not in pedestrian traffic. Is this legal? I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for this.

I did.
Parked in an alley in downtown Pittsburgh, on the sidewalk so not to block the alley.
When I returned I found the parking ticket - Paid it.

I tend to not pull my bike all the way forward into parking spots, that way a car will see it sooner and know the spot is taken, still leaves room to the front if another rider wants to pull in too.

It's my theory that if a driver sees my bike sooner they won't have had enough time to accelerate into the spot, as some folks like to do...

I am sure it is not legal but as the people in my area ( local police) are bike friendly. they alow us to park in the corded of areas for cars there has never been a problem. sure is nice when citizens and police have a little respect for each other.

over the years, I've parked on sidewalks, along the curb and gutter on the front of parking lots, in the areas of parking lots that are nothing but stripes and have only gotten one ticket. The ticket I received was for parking perpendicular to a handicap parking place. When I went to court over this ticket the judge simply asked the question to the police officer who wrote the ticket, "what is this, is this a law?" after that he cut the fee in half and told me to be careful. After further investigation of this particular code, it is illegal for anyone to park next to a handicap parking space painted or not, its just not enforced. that was about 15 years ago and I have not gotten another parking ticket since.
Pretty much, if you park your scoot out of the way of traffic and out of everybody's
way, parking place or not, you shouldn't have any problems.

It is generally illegal to park anywhere but in a designated parking spot.

But, I have on occassion parked on the sidewalk, in the cross striped area next to a handi-crapper spot (got a ticket once though) or in those little nooks and crannies were a bike would fit and be out of the way.

Most of the time LEOs will not bother... But, with the encouragement of the squid movment, some LEOs just like to F*ck with motorcycles.

Happy Parking!!

Yeah... park so the bike is VISIBLE in the parking spot. Center it and leave it to where its back end is visible to a car who might whip into the "empty" parking spot!

Parking in non-designated areas is just asking for a ticket. If you're in a tow-away area (like a Mall filled with last-minute Christmas shoppers) - just take the time to park properly. IF it's towed, it's very likely going to be damaged.

In the city of Columbus it is legal to park on the side walks. I park politely, that is not to block doors or impede the flow on the sideway and have never had a problem other than a parking meter guy wanting to chew the fat with me. I had a problem with a mall with in the city that hassled me about it.

If I am in one of the burbs I park toward on of the parking spot so the cagers can see me. I had a bike hit once and the guy fled, no note. I hate parking in parking lots. At work we built a designated motorcycle parking area with borrowed parking stops.

In large parking lots, I always park in the furthest away spots where cars don't generally park because they don't like walking an extra 100-200ft.

It actually gets me out of there quicker anyway.
Park for the exit, never the entrance : )

I park in front of the dealership, in the no park zone. It is stripped off and gives a wide birth to the cars... Its our own rule for the no parking zone, so I figure it is ours to break ;) Besides, my bike is usually covered in a thick dose of MUD, nobody wants to sit on it.

I parked in a car parking space at a shopping centre on a Saturday afternoon once, & while ambling gently around the stores, was surprised to hear my registration being read out on the PA system.

Thinking the worst, I hurried out to the parking to find that some dummy (French) had decided he wanted the parking place come what may, so he decided to move my FJ1200 himself.

Unfortunately (for him) the steering was locked & the disc lock was on & the alarm too, it fell on him & broke his ankle.

The ambulance came, the Cops came, & I cried with laughter as his car was towed away for obstruction.

He had to pay for a new bar-end, rear indicator & front-brake lever. Not counting the fine for obstruction & recovery.

The cops (riding bmw's) told the bloke he was lucky not being done for criminal damage too!

A good day.

so he decided to move my FJ1200 himself.

It simply amazes me that people feel that they have the right to move, touch or sit on someone else's motorcycle. Serves the guy right!

It simply amazes me that some feel they have the right to break the law by parking other then in a designated parking space.

Out of respect for our laws, law enforcement, the handicap, emergency vehicles and personnel ........ DO THE RIGHT THING. Also, your actions reflect on the entire rider community. Rant over... thanks for listening!

When ever possible I create my own parking space in corners and niches that cars can't use, and that includes the sidewalk.

I have only been hassled by the mall rent-a-cops who seem to feel it is their duty to defy common sense, so there I just wait and grab the best car space I can find to prove my point.

San Francisco seems to be the most motorcycle friendly city that I have ever been in, there they create "premium" parking spaces just for bikes all over the city.

Cities are beginning to realize that motorcycles/scooters/bicycles are far more efficient in terms of emissions, parking, etc. Look at China, Japan, Europe...

I actually had a Suzuki knocked over in a parking spot. It was an elderly gentleman who tried to leave but was hooked on the bike. Rather than make a claim, he gave me book price on the bike and bought it from me.

I try to park in BFE when possible. If it's at a store, I park in the back where people are too lazy to walk from. At work, I get special privledges and get to park in the garage (the sidestand leaves dimple in the new black top)

The city I live in tickets bikes on the sidewalk and in out of the way areas only when a cop or meter maid feels like it. It's an inconsistent and ridiculous law in this town.

Yeah... I got a ticket recently... after 6 years of parking in the same spot in front of a business. The ditzy meter maid (he's a man, actually) walked past my bike for 6 years before he ticketed it.

Dopey moron.
