One could really over analyze this with regards to greek mythology....

A horse may seem mundane. The Pegasus is everything BUT mundane.

>I disagree with that, but it's not my point.

Horses are not even native to North America.

The logo is for the company, not a specific product or product line.

I'm wondering why Ducati uses a modified "no/don't" sign, but maybe that's just me.

What I'm really wondering is, if AT&T isn't the Evil Empire, why do they use the Death Star as their logo?

Why would a recently-founded company not be able to enjoy the poetic metaphor of an ancient design for a logo, any less than a 100 year old company?

Cowboys/horses and their associated things are pretty recent to us, horse symbolism is still deeply ingrained in American culture. It may not resonate they same in other countries.

I don't think the Flying Merkel really did fly, it's a metaphor for the sensation of speed and/or freedom.

Flying horse seems a very obvious metaphor for a motorcycle to me.

The Pontiac Fiero shares the Pegasus as it's logo by the way, in addition to Mobil.

"mobile" get it? Even they understand the symbol the same way. The oil/gasoline gives us a mobility that was only imagined in ancient Greek times.

Don't know if I'm ready to tattoo it, but I like it a lot, myself.

Oh, by the way, horses are 'native' to North America, but they died out some time ago. They were "re-introduced" by the Spanish in 1500-whatever.

Horses are not even native to North America.

That was kind of hidden in my point as to why I didn't think the horse-motorcycle relationship was an American idea.

Kind of like how apple pie is actually an English, not an American dish. Sort puts new meaning on the phrase "as american as apple pie", don't it?

The bottom line is horses make sense. Even look at riding styles - A "western" saddle puts the rider laid back, feet somewhat forward and not doing much, much like a "typical" american cruiser. And "english" saddle, on the other hand, tucks the legs way up and uses them to control the animal, with the rider more crouched, much like a european sport bike.

The seat on a bike is commonly referred to as a saddle, and saddlebags are an accepted term for luggage - as are paniers, which also have roots of being "bags hung in pairs over a pack animal".

Anyways, a horse doesn't have to be some mundane thing - thoroughbred race horses are bred to compete - large, powerful animals that go like the wind.

Not to mention, my Buell breathes beneith me...it has a heartbeat, therefore it is alive.

Rocket - you ever rideen a horse? Not an Iron Horse, but a real horse? You should try it - it might change your mind.

"Horses are not even native to North America."

Then horses fit with the 1125 motor.

This might come as a surprise to some. Yes I've ridden a horse. Convinced me how effeminate the whole experience of horse riding is. Knights in armour is centuries past. Cowboys and Indians about 100 years dead. Apart from horse racing, horse riding is a girly pastime. Come to think of it, even race jockeys are shorter in height than your average chic. Blokes on horses - gay cavalero comes to mind.

Tell me, does anyone own a Buell that shits in the middle of the road?

Rocket

Rocket, one of my hobbies is putting armor on & practicing a martial art based on classic European Knight's combat. ( more free form than Kendo ) I have friends that Joust. I think they are nuts. Falling off a Horse HURTS. Having someone poke you off the saddle with a small tree HAS to hurt worse. Oh, well, lord & lady they have fun. Effeminate doesn't apply.

That horse jumping bit looks fun, isn't it English? That bit where you p$%% off animal lovers with a fox? Did they ban that?

I like the pegasus logo. Greek, Viking, and others have a winged horse in their mythology. Hellicon was the river that rose from the strike of the hoof of Pegasus. Valkeries rode winged steeds. ( and the Valkerie/squirrel story makes me laugh )

Taste is taste. Feel free to come up with a more macho, modern logo. I'd like to see it. Really.

Don't knock the Deathstar. ( relatives have & do work there, & they refer to it as such. )

I would like to give proper credit for this pic but I downloaded it from a Buell Owner's website that's not around any more. Don't remember who shot the pic or where they were; but I really appreciate this sculpture!

Cowboys and Indians still exist, they just don't get to kill each other so often, or as cinematically.
My uncle was/is a farrier ( a horse-shoer) my other distant relatives still live on the reservation in OK.

I've only ridden a horse one time. My immediate impression was that it was too high to be with out a helmet and I did not find it enjoyable.

They all smell like horse shit, too.
