Have any of you ever had your speedometer fail? Yesterday I had no clue how fast I was going. I was in 5th gear passing people and my speedo said I was doing 40mph then 75, then 23. ???? Is it a cable like on other bikes? Havent had time to fool with it yet.

Ok. Thank you for the info. I guess I need to order one and figure out where it goes.
So you have gone through many too huh? This would be my first. See how many miles I can get out of a new one....

I'm not certain, but I believe the 03 xb9 did NOT have the 5 volt regulated power from the ECM/ECU for the speed sensor. If I remember correctly, this was addressed in 04, or possibly even mid year 03.

If that is the case, the replacement sensor has a built in 5 volt regulator. The sensor for the tubers has this now also, and might even be the same part. I'm not sure, it has been too long.

The sensor is located on the right side of the engine directly above the output shaft of the tranny, and is held with a single bolt.

Correct Hootowl, the 03 XB9R's did not have regulated 5v supplies.

All XB9s's *did* have the safer regulated voltage, and I think all the 12's did as well but there was at least one and maybe two years that the XB9R's did not.

If it failed because it is covered in swarf, cleaning will help, if it was blown by a transient, it won't.

Be glad you only have to fix it once. I declared war when the second one popped in less then 100 miles.

+ on the cleaning.

I had the same symptoms, and it's been perfect for the last 2k miles after wiping it with a rag.

I went through several speed sensors before installing a 5v regulator in the harness. Thanks to Reepicheep for the research on that one. It is still going strong. I think this was one of the times that Buell took a cue from this board and updated a part based on discussions here. I could be completely off base, but the timing was about right.
