I was in a Harley dealership the other day picking up a Dyna filter for the Buell and got talking about Buell's with one of the sales guys and he mentioned that he got word from somebody at Deeley's that a V-Rod engined sport touring model was in the pipeline from Buell. I asked if the bike would be a 2008 model but he didn't know any other details other than that a new sport touring bike was coming and the V-Rod engine was the powerplant.

There is a whole history of the V-Rod engine and it previous roots with Buells, and why it won't be used. Interesting reading and worth the search.

The only credible rumor I've heard pertaining to the V-Rod engine is this: That Harley will be watching the sales of the new Victory Vision very closely, and if it sells well they'll have their own fully modern luxury tourer available based on a 2 liter version of the Revolution engine. But that would hardly be considered a "Sport Tourer," would it?

My info says that HD is working on a V-Rod/Electra-Glide hybrid but that 'their' hoped-for 2008 debut has been pushed back to '09

HD will not use the VR power plant for a Buell. PERIOD. I've heard that from at least 4 people at HD. 2 of which test/develop motors.

And I highly doubt HD will make a Buell that competes with their current line of touring bikes. Their sales are dropping like a John Denver airplane as it is.

That was a cool machine before they added the fairing. All H-D front fairings look awful!

I wish they were watching the Victory Vegas/Hammer and drop a nice, flowing, smooth lined bike of their own.

The VROD is close, but I wish for something based on the ol'twin.

I think there's too many models of the VR. I believe there's 5 to choose from. I look at this as HD's attempt to find a market for it. They found soem of that market with the NightRod, dealers can't keep them in stock.

I just don't see HD putting a VR motor in a Buell, makes no sense to allow folks to purchase a bike with that motor for 5-10k less than a VR sells for.

There will never be any variation of the V-Rod motor in the Buell.

It started out as a gifted Buell project, was basically seized by some folks at Harley-Davidson who succeeded in making it too heavy, too expensive, too unreliable and too much of a compromise.

Buell would use pedals before they'd use that engine.

It's a living business case study in how a committee can trash a perfectly good idea.

Yes. I saved all the documents and photos of where the entire project started and yes, they are in complete and total conflict with the ridiculous DVD the goofballs did to cover their tracks.

Just my personal opinion as a construction worker. . . .

If hd wanted to do a buell specific power plant they would have all ready done it.

When you cant' redily test ride all you can do is read reviews and look at specs.

"Buell would use pedals before they'd use that engine. "

Another 2008 hint, Erik is bring back the bicycle into production. It's got all the elements, can be any color, is ready for the dirt, can be used legally on the road, and meets post 2008 EPA guidelines (provided the rider hasn't been eating stuffed cabbage and okra).

If I remember there were pics of a Buell Mountainbike floating around somewhere. Are they planning on using the old frame for the new bicycles???

Hah . . . good point Mike, but alas that's not going to happen at the moment.

I will get to see my old pal Chris next week who was an integral player in making that entire deal happen years ago.

You'd also be glad to know that after 2 years of trolling a hefty bounty I finally scored my 1992 Paramount catalog. I know I am going to find the two I have "filed" somewhere, but until then.

Fun to watch Klein, Seven, Ellsworth, BMC and others move that technology ahead. The bicycle is the single thing that Erik and I BOTH kept a copy of. . . .

It'll be good to see Chris.

If Harley built a "sport tour" no matter what engine the'd make it weight soo much that "sport" would have to be removed from the title.

Buell has the ability to mix and match parts, and some more CC's or just a 6-speed trans, then some wind protection and bags.... "sport tour"

----------------------------------
The Victory is not a true "sport tour" though it could be called "partial sport tour"

Actually in the currently deployed form, no.

I'm mostly just pissed about the things some folks did.

I stand corrected.

So, when they took away the VR engine from Buell, what water cooled engine did they start working on to replace the loss of that engine? The one we will see July 8th?

I actually liked the FXRT fairing.

I've looked at the Street Rod, but haven't had a ride yet.

I may be unwelcome at the local shop for a bit ( till I buy something ), since I told the salesman, in front of the owner, that he was clueless about the 'TT, ( he thought it a ghetto bike, and was unhappy about the tone of the ad in the Buell 'catalog' ) and told him they "had an urban assault machine on their hands & if they actually sold bikes, instead of waiting for people to write checks for a Hog they were going to buy anyway, they could get some of the market that buys 'busa's with extended swingarms in Chrome." Didn't make them happy.

Court, I wasn't trying to correct you. I was just curious about the current state of the engine. I hadn't heard of any major flaws, so I was wondering if you knew something I didn't.
